Why is that they have vast blocks of land and yet they build such tight turning racetracks ?

Why is it so ?

Nobody can tell me that any of those starting positions are fair to all runners.

What were racetrack designers thinking back in the 1800s ?

Perhaps the wise old sages thought it was an improvement on the pommunist model. They were correct.
