Victorian jockey stood down after cocaine positive sample

Racing NSW

Racing Victoria stewards advise that they have received the analyst’s report on the urine sample provided by licensed jockey, Andrew Findlay, subsequent to him riding at the Kilmore race meeting on Saturday, 16th June 2007.

The analyst has reported the presence of Benzoylecgonine (a
metabolite of cocaine) in the sample provided by him.

Andrew Findlay has been stood down from riding and an inquiry
into the matter will be held on a date to be fixed.

It's quite a shame to see talent wasted through drug addiction

It seems to be happening all to often with all our major sports stars now, maybe to much money and to much spare time ?

Is it that depression sets in through not getting enough rides?

Is it that they aren't good enough and only feed good after getting their fix?

So many jockeys have taken their lives through being unable to cope with their life as it is.  Maybe they should have other part-time work and take leave to ride only on certain days of the week.

Would that fix the problem?  I wouldn't have thought that Andrew Findlay would have been earning enough to buy the drugs in the first place.

Also a problem keeping the weight off, which cocaine and speed help, also a case of mixing in  with dubious crowds who have access to this shit

Findlay suspended for 18 months

6 July
Racing Victoria

Racing Victoria stewards on Thursday inquired into the analyst’s report on the urine sample provided by licensed jockey, Andrew Findlay subsequent to him fulfilling riding engagements at Kilmore on Saturday, 16th June 2007.

The analyst had reported that the urine sample contained the presence of Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

Evidence was taken from Andrew Findlay, Mr Des O’Keeffe, Executive Officer VJA, who represented A Findlay and evidence was also taken from Ms Lisa Stephens, Psychologist.

Andrew Findlay pleaded guilty to a charge of having provided a sample of his urine after riding at the Kilmore meeting on Saturday, 16th June 2007, which was found on analysis to contain the presence of Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

Andrew Findlay was suspended from riding in races for a period of 18 months, and from riding track work and in trials for a minimum period of 12 months, both terms commencing at midnight, Wednesday, 27th June 2007, on which day he was stood down from riding.

He was further notified that he would not be permitted to ride again until he satisfied the Stewards that he has completed rehabilitation and counselling courses as directed by the Stewards on professional advice.

In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account A Findlay’s guilty plea, how the term of suspension would affect him generally, and also that he has two previous similar offences, and that he had only recently returned to riding after being penalised for an offence involving the same substance.

He was further advised that he must produce a clear sample of his urine prior to riding again.

Too right there Sladey. Dubious characters that like to corrupt jockeys with cash and drugs. Andrew wanted to be a hoop from a very young age. Often seen hanging around the mounting yard and jockeys at Yarra Glen meetings. His dream would be shattered by now. Maybe he should make his next comeback in the USA where ex coke heads seem to do well in the saddle. A complete change of environment might keep some of the scumbags away for a while.
