denzel, still nothing about this yearling you got
This must be special to keep it secret lol
Geo, a couple of weeks since the Van Lance posting, is he still going okay without impressing you?

Longneck,
Van Lace is still a little unimpressive, although she is getting better, don't know how much she will improve though.
Not as lazy as she was, and got her down to running a half in around 61 on a very heavy sand track working over a mile and a half in around 3:20

things have gone quiet in April, thought I might start off the updates. Yearling is back for second prep. Horse with problems running straight has had his back looked at and teeth done, so about to start again. Pedros Pick (the one that tore a suspesory ligament) has started hopple working. He is about 7 seconds off a good race time, only working alone. He is about to trial with other horses for the first time in nearly three years (hopefully on Sunday). Not expecting him to win but he is going great guns for the little time he has been fast working. Still holding my breath every time he runs, just hoping that leg holds up. The amount of icing and warming up again you have to do just to be safe is huge, so to see him break down again would be devestating.

Longneck,
Van Lace has had 2 trials the last 2 Sundays.
1st one I was happy with, she led them up over 2200m and only ran out of condition in the last 100m.
Last Sunday she galloped for no reason at the start and lost 20m, sat last and pulled her head off and didn't run on at all.
So back to the drawing board again.
Has worked a lot better this week so see how she goes on Sunday again.
To be honest prob not good enough for Vic but might look at sending her to Adelaide later on.

now i know Chris the puppet Alford is a crackerjack driver (one needs only look at the first 3 winners today at Maryborough he drove them all to victory) but he really did something special today in race 6...he drove 2 horses in the one race, that is simply OUTSTANDING

I have Pedros Pick nominated for his first start in 3 years on Friday at Gawler. No where near his top but it is so hard to get them to that when trialling against themselves, also we have the injury to worry about as that could go again any time. However BE TOLD, I expect him to perform okay, and if the nominations stand up the way they are then he should get inside the back row.  So provided we get a bit of luck we could go well.
So what I am saying is if he pops up at $20 then have an each way bet because that is way over what he should be.
If he does not get a place, then I am changing address (lol)

dont you just love racing. Travel 4 hours one way and 4 hours home, just to have your horse not happy with something and therefore hang the whole way, not concentrate on racing and tail off last.
You gotta be crazy.

Longneck,
That is just part of racing mate, like when I sent my filly 4 hrs to Mildura for her to gallop 1/2 a lap.
Don't be too disheartened!!

in the past 12 months i've driven from melbourne to geelong, maryborough, ballarat & later this week to bendigo, to watch either of my galloper or pacer run. best result was a 6 length 2nd. i do it for similar reason why i find it hard to concentrate on anything but the horse up to a week out from it's upcoming run!

you guys probably reckon that sort of travel is nothing special though. :-)

Gobaggers,
good to see you are committed to your horses. I must say if I did not have to go I would simply watch it on Sky Channel. It is the getting time off work, loading and unloading horse(s) and gear, washing them etc. Then making sure you are there a couple of hours before, just to stay with the horse, and then return home at early hours of the morning that is annoying.
Of course not as annoying if you win or run good.  It is the fact the horse can't say to you, look I am not feeling good so you are wasting your time taking me, is the frustrating part, but as they say "that's racing"
Thanks to my horses bewildering performance on Friday Night I am off to Port Pirie, some two hours away, just to trial. (can't handle the embarrassment again if he goes like that so need to make sure it was a one off)

Longneck/Baggers,
Know exactly how you feel, but the thrill of getting a winner and the hope of getting a good one just keeps you going.
I hope Pedro goes better for you tonight Longneck.
Just an update on my battlers:
Van Lace is now in Mildura, as I thought she did not measure up to racing down here, gave her 4 trials at Maryborough and could see where she was going to end up.
Zucchini is still in the paddock, she hasn't done as well as I thought yet so will leave her out for a while yet.

The frustrating thing from my experience, which is probably not that bad, is that both my galloper and pacer won trials (galloper won 2 trials at lindsay park) and i have no idea what to expect come race day but the fact they win trials makes me think we're a big chance to win the race. Admittedly combined they've only had 5 starts and they're both 2yo with plenty to look forward to, but they haven't won a race yet and i've felt slightly let down on raceday that they haven't won. I'm only new to this and these are my first horses so i probably have a lot to learn re what to expect. Actually the pacer i wasn't disappointed with, he just had an average drive. I dont want to say the names of my horses in case they let me down again. (hope not)
I've probably already said too much. :-)

"I dont want to say the names of my horses in case they let me down again"
Sad, Sad,Sad....
Can never understand this way of thinking....
People should be proud weather they own 10% of Blacks a Fake or 10% of one thats had 30 starts and hadn't ran a place....
Thats just my opinion anyway...

Actually it's more because there's a few other owners in it and i dont know what they'd think if they knew i'd been talking about the horse online. You know how it is, unless you're paying the bills you're not supposed to know anything. I'll see how he goes tomorrow and maybe i'll say more then. ;-)

correct, I have not one in work at the moment and correct on 2nd count too lol!!!
Nah not really if I had another which was ready to come back in then I would be working it as I find this time of the year is best for the fringe horses.
How is your team travelling denzel? Has johnny been going around at all in WA??

Our horse won yesterday! Wouldn't be too hard to find out his name given what i've written in earlier posts. :-)

Can't believe i've already got a winner, he's the first pacer i've ever had and only the 2nd horse overall. What a great feeling, unreal.

Congrats baggers,
You would not believe it, 2 x 2yo winners at Bendigo yesterday and they both raced at Maryborough their only other start and both won trials at Ballarat, from what I see the mystery continues a little, lol!!!!
Seriously though well done and broke 2 minutes as well which is a good effort.

SJ went for a lengthy spell after a good effort at first prep for them winning 4 i think. Think he is still 1st or 2nd at Harvey in "Horse of Year" points....
Our team only consists of the yearling we got at the sales this year....So like you have a long wait until there is a light on the horizon....
Well done Baggers on the mystery win......

Just a short message to let you all know how insignificant horse racing actually is.
The Owner of Pedros Pick had a nearly 2yr old boy (I think that was his age, and he is a boy noy horse) who lost his fight for life last night. I have never personally met them but I cried (because i have kids)
So losing ahorse race is not so bad after all

Well, i think everything pales into insignificance when something like that happens not just horses, i can't even imagine what losing my 3yo daughter or 8mth old son would be like. I don't think i'd ever recover.

Bancoora i didn't even know it myself but just made a phone call and yep it appears that's our horse. :-)
I'm going to get myself a copy of this mag i think.

Baggers not wrong there.  I have a 7yo son and he is my pride and joy in this world.  I can not imagine life without him, problem is the Mrs got to him and he barracks for Melbourne!!!
Good thing though is that he loves his horses, especially his pony which he will race next year in the pony trots.

Always looking mate!!
Looked at an Armbro Operative yearling that they wanted around $7500 for.  They ended up taking it to Graeme Board & Co Shepparton Sales and got $15,000 for him, did look a nice type.
Only problem is that I really don't want anymore by myself, would love to have one or two with a number of other people.

Geo,
Yeah that sounds just like me, always looking, but knowing full well we can't afford.
Denzel,
That chestnut 3yo my wife got has just started jogging up again a few weeks ago after being gelded. I am still worried he is a nutcase and even after getting blood worms out of him I think he is not putting weight on so next it stomach ulcer treatment and that is expensive.
The yearling I bought with a few guys is about to have his third and most serious prep.
Pedros Picks leg is holding up fine, it is everything else that isn't. Ever since that one start we gave him he has gone backwards (he was going a lot better than he showed that start)
We had his blood tested and there was nothing serious, his salt levels were down a bit so we will saline drench him a bit more and the Vet suggested he may have a slight virus so he had the appropriate treatment. We gave him a week off and you would think he would be fresh after that, but no he is the same. I think three years off may have been too much and he may have lost that will to race. I will find out in about 4 weeks when he hits the track again.
Who has your yearling?

Ciao for Now is going. He ran his worse race on Saturday Night, definately needs 6-8 weeks off.  However I have not one person interested in paying up for him so Off he must go.
Everybody on the trading ring wants a $2000 champion so I hope the owner does not have to advertise him there, but if he does that's life.

did they take the hopples off and turn it into a galloper

Vo,
have a look at the first few posts and the one in particular from specialweek about the galloper called Ciao for Now.
Bloody Hell Specialweek where the hell have you been. My wife has been looking mid week and on Saturdays, but has never seen him start.
Vo,
doh, doh, bloody doh.
Anyway Ciao for now, the pacer is susposed to be starting in WA next week or close to that. I have to get rid of Pedros Pick, he is going hopeless, tried everything.
The wife had that chestnut that has now been sold, he is a nut and took an hour and a half to load in a float.
I now have a share in the yearling I bought and that is it.

denzel,
there comes a time where you say that's it. I have spent so much money on the buggers lately and I am building a house so if they can't perform then goodbye.
I know Ciao for Now is due to run in WA shortly and will (or I should say should) win some races. From my point of view it would have cost more to jog him up again and find out if he can win again.
I know it is a hobby, but as I keep saying to people you can have your hobby, but still keep them turning over until you find the money earner.
So all I have now is a yearling, which within the next three months we will be looking for a trainer for (father in law is coming with me for a holiday, and no races around here now)
I know your yearling will be oposition, and still waiting to hear about it???
Everytime we ask about it, you go quiet if you can't say, then just say so, hope that makes sense.

My (1/5th share in) is being sent to Adelaide because he is now a 2yr old. He is doing everything right without horses around him, so needs that.
I know this is not exactly exciting news, but lets face it, there is not much else happening on the Harness site.
Naming form has been sent yesterday and will advise when it comes through so we can all watch him come last.

Ciao For Now went pretty good tonight in Harvey race 6, considering it was the 50-1 outsider of the field, was 3 back pegs in running, got out late and flashed up to run a close 4th, and it was the 3 favs that ran in front of it. Never heard of the driver before Tim Stone, but he did nothing wrong on it.

CIAO FOR NOW just won race 5 at NARROGIN from the pole in a field of 8, and paid $17.80 a win, it led all the way...never looked like losing, fav sat in the death and the driver Tim Stone arrogantly sat up on the leader so as not to let the 3rd fav out, who was sitting behind him.

That 'secret' 3yo that i have an interest in :-) has come back good and is running friday night ballarat in the 3yo race. It's a decent step up in grade so we'll see how he goes, but you dont want to die wondering, so we're making the trip up the highway to ballarat and i have my fingers crossed he'll do well. He's only a little fella but you know ya gotta be in it to win it!

If you did a search of my posts you'd probably know which horse it is. I've coped better this week than last week, but now starting to get a bit nervous waiting for the race to come tonight. Just hope he runs well, doesn't have to win, I'll be happy if he can get into the placings. Tonight tells us a lot about where he sits i reckon, if he's capable of melbourne city class racing or not. Fingers crossed guys!

Gobaggers, did not do my research well enough, I saw the pole horse was beaten into second by about 6 lenghts (as per one of your previous posts I thought that was it)
I have had a couple of horses with Webster and trust me you are in very good hands. He should go well. Have a couple of beers, it gets rid of a few nerves and passes the time by.
Good luck I will put something on him.

I just informed the other owner I'm not going to ballarat to watch him, I'm too nervous and I'll hate the long drive home if he goes bad. So here i am sitting at home, pacing the deck, up and down the hallway, i'm a bloody wreck i've never been like this before any of my other horse's races. I cant help it but i'll be devestated if he doesn't run well, dont know why, maybe it's because i know he has plenty of ability.

LLD the name was from the other owner, he just liked the sound of it. I nominated him to be called "In the Octagon" but i reckon Tear it all away is a good name too. Earlier foal apparently was a bit nutty and tried to do a backflip a week before the sales, broke his neck and died. Bit of a tragedy.

Fingers crossed  :censored:  i'm nervous. (excuse the french)

I think you have run into a very good horse.
The people that purchased Normie   from NZ are the same people that bought  The Falcoln Strike over andonly buy horses that are potential Grand Circuit horses.

I haven't seen the replay yet but at the time i thought the horse in the death hung around longer than we would've liked, not that it would've made a difference to the result but we didn't end up peeling off Normie's back to get a crack at him until after straightening. For a stride or two before the turn I thought we were going as good or better than the leader and that we'd be a big chance if he got out for a clear run. Also Geoff was pretty kind to him, didn't go mad hitting him or anything, and we beat home the horse that rolled us at Geelong 2 starts back, so that was good. I agree the winner looks like a good one, but who knows if he draws the back and gets some average luck, and the breaks go our way, we might be able to sneak a little bit of revenge on him too one day.

Thanks Geo..
Didn't know she was running....We went to sales last year with the intention of buying her but she was really small...Went in and thought if she went cheap would get her...Pulled out of the bidding at 9000 and you are right she went for 12000....It was only her size that put us off....
Won't go into the long story but we ended up buying a trotter (Who knows why)..Got into a bidding war with Chris Lang's big owner so that was a good sign that he liked him also...Sort of goes ok with the trotters does Chris Lang.... He is coming along ok so will keep you informed of his progress in coming months...For Longneck he is by Sundon, out of Majestic Maori...Has just been named, which is another story but lets just say he was the biggest and best looking trotter at the sales....

Not sure about sales this year....I am like people who go to crown casino and have put myself on the self exclusion list as i keep paying for those ice cold crownies you drink each year....
Have thought this previous years but can't help myself...I feel like those moth's in "Bug's life" that keep flying into the light when they know the outcome is ordinary...

Thanks mate yeah he did good didnt he. I couldn't make it as i have 2 little kids and a night race is only ok if it's close to home, so had to settle for sky at home. Man did i shout i went silly and my daughter laughed her head off at my antics. Yeah didnt stop there though then i shouted myself a few beers then bundys and coke. Now i'm hungover as hell and i didnt even go out anywhere!

Pity he pulled at MV a few starts back, i think he could've run a place but it wasnt to be. Fingers crossed he keeps improving as he grows and learns more.

You will no doubt take an interest in tonight's South Australian pacers derby, it sees the clash of Mafioso (Group one Gav) and NORMIE (Lance Justice) I saw the early betting on the race and they have Mafioso at $1.40 and Normie at around $3.50...only because he's drawn the 2nd line i dare say. If Normie happens to win, that'll send the stocks of yours soaring

Something not right with Normie he's better than that. Last start he beat the 2nd horse home in a canter by 18m, last night he gets beat by it by 40m. A 58m turnaround?

Vo dont put any mozz on him please! He's not a future star just yet, he's a nice 3yo but he's still got to learn how to relax when he's driven out hard. And he has to prove he can go with the likes of Maffioso, Normie, Watchmefella, Flightpath and co. I dont think he's in their league yet but I guess you never know what can happen in the future. This might be as good as he ever gets, you just never know.

But for the time being I just can't believe my luck that the first horse i've ever been involved in turned out to be him.

just telling it like it is GoBaggers, he sustained quite a long run, and in the process ran down the 6/4 fav which has good wraps on it Captain Cullen, and also passed Lady Octavia who was around 11/4 and had won $39k in prizemoney and had more race experience. G. Webster doesn't hurt his chances of improving either

Final of this series is at Echuca, and it's PBD so we'll get outside of the back row again. I heard Echuca is a dump of a track and we'll require a good dose of luck to not get posted 6 wide coming round the last turn. Fingers crossed but it doesn't sound good, I'm not really expecting to win. What do you guys know about the Echuca track? I just hope he doesnt hurt himself. Well done Baggers, I have been on holidays have not had internet access but good to see one of us is getting a winner.
Geo and Denzel, when are the sales on, I missed the Adelaide one. Are the previous years results on HRV website (I will look myself but probably wont find) as it is nice to know if I can come up with some cash if it is worth it or my small cash wont buy anything worth while.
Long trip to Vic, so if I do go I might have to get a hotel room for the night and partake in some of those ice cold crownies.

Geo...
Didn't get the email as left early to look at a few...
Ended up buying one (was probably a $1.05 chance)...
Had a couple of crownies and looked out for you but no luck..
We bought lot 95 a trotter by Earl out of a sister to Sundon which looks a nice racey type...
Did you look at the trotters this year? Did you buy any yourself?
Anyone who couldn't make it "i think" the 2 top buys until i left were sister to Safari that fetched $52000 and a sister to By My Side with went for $44000
Will be interested to see final figures as looked like a buyers market but then some you shook ya head at that fetched close to 20k...

Do you guys remember a horse called Mark Craig?
He was stiff in the Derby won by Golden reign who he got the better of on occasions.
He was a gun 3 & 4yo.
Never heard of him much after that
There one in the sydney sales from his family.
Any breeding gurus out there?

denzel,
Well what a day that was.
Went there with a few in mind, pacers this time as only liked one trotter and I knew thay wanted too much for it.  The one by Mr Lavec out of Late Withdrawl.
Bidded on a few only to get done, mostly by Andy and Tonkin's.
Well anyway the women folk (who we had sent shopping earlier) turned up later in the day.  By that time we were getting quite shaky on the feet due to Crownieitis.  We went inside to sit down.  Anyway what should walk in but a bloody chestnut filly with a very light mane etc.
Well that was it, they wanted it so I said I will only bid $4,000 and if anyone bids that's it.  Knowing our luck no one else bid for it and we got stuck with it, much to the excitement of the ladies.
So we walked outside and told my mate what we had done, he nearly died.
Lot 259 by Totally Western out of Natures Own.
Sent up to Tim O'Briens and Brooke Hansen to get broken in.
At least we got the hats and the holter I suppose!!

Geo..
LOL....Awesome..
I had a look at the book at IMO you got a fantasic buy....Out of a strong family...
There is a video on the APG site of her and is that Gary Graham (Pretty sure you would know him) leading her on the video???
The trotter you liked was the "National Interest" family and I only looked at him passing by as knew Sheron Park would want to keep him and either bid you up or just be a "Buy back".....
Tonkin and crew were buying quiet a few on the day i saw....You had no hope if were bidding against them....
I actually thought you may have been really interested in Lot 52 Elsu/Pumpkin colt...I think he went for around the 16k mark....Was a really nice type...
Was great weather to have a beer there.....Remember "Got to be in it to win it"..

I had a look at the Pumpkin colt, was a nice type.
Yeah Gary Graham prepared her for the sale.  Yeah I do know him.  Her brother actually goes nice for a young 2yo apparantly but will see what happens.  We are hopeful of getting the name Pure Blonde.  Will fit into where she is going to be worked from as they had the horse Enjoy a Crownie (before he broke down and had to be put down) and Enjoy a Champers who is still racing.
Sheron Park always do that.  I think they must just take them there in the hope one day someone will pay way too much for one.
It's good to see the sales average was up over 19%, good surprise actually.
I didn't mind that one you bought either.  Looked a nice type.

Did not get there guys.
I am actually looking at buying one from NZ, big dollars, but I guess you know it can run at least.  Horse is called Lorenzo Bromac. Ran 6th at first start, sitting in death and only beaten about 3.4 lengths.
I think it is in on Wednesday, but I have to investigate how to listen to it on the net.
I looked up the race on the NZ harness site and saw a fair bit of it, but it is pretty poor download.
Any thoughts, success stories or failures anyone has experienced in doing the same?
Thanks

It was good when the NZ horses where a bit cheaper as you could get them and make money out of them.
Bought three from NZ cheap, this is a while ago though.
2 were nice horses and the other was a bit of a flop but still got one race out of it

Longneck....
Did some quick research and he is the 13th foal out of a mare called "Laura Rose"..
Pretty strong family so know he wouldn't be a cheapie....
How much do they charge to get one to Aus these days???
With sperm so easy transported I think is a big reason why going across and buying them has slowed as we have access to so many stallions...
When you add the cost of the trip across and the purchase price and the shipment to get one back, You really need a good one to make it all worth it....Plenty have tried...
Good Luck If you go ahead ....

Obviously you would be looking to race him in vic and send him to Webster or similar because i just did some quick calculations and if you payed 30k for one and raced him in SA....
With declining prizemoney there, you would break even when he was 29y/o and a C90/M70.....

well worked out, you are right about the prize money. However I would intend to let the father in law (who has been ill) have some fun with him first.
Would be interested to know what a reasonable price would be (in peoples opinion) to get a guide as to if I am paying too much.

Also denzel, very reluctant to buy a horse off the trading ring. I have seen a few $10,000 horses suddely lose 200 metres in pace when they are sold.
Would rather spend a bit extra to get a young one which is not up to derby competition.  However I do realise it is still a risk, the horse may have a problem, you just can't tell. I guess even buying a yearling you have the possibility they have a lung problem that will prevent them from running any good or they may just have no ability.

You should be able to pick up something that goes ok for around the $30k mark.
If you know someone over in NZ to go drive them and look them over with vet etc that is always helpful.

Do you guys remember a horse called Mark Craig?
He was stiff in the Derby won by Golden reign who he got the better of on occasions.
He was a gun 3 & 4yo.
Never heard of him much after that
There one in the sydney sales from his family.

Having a big rethink now. Lorenzo Bromac finished 17L last today.  There were excuses, he was last and was pushed out three wide and then sprinted around field to the front. Was then tackled in straight and with about 200m to go was probably only 2L off them, but then stopped completely.  Lot of money to pay for a horse that stopped like that even with the excuses.

Longneck,
What was your approx spending on this NZ horse??
I wouldn't go to trading ring either....If i was wanting to get one to have some fun with and that has ability and racing I would do this...
If you were paying 5k to get one here then you would want to be spending over 20k.. I would start watching races everywhere and come up with a list of ones you think go ok but are trained by dud trainers and can be improved...You can easy pick one up here for 20-30k mark thats going ok if you talk to people and do plenty of research...
Even if you just want one for your father in law to have fun with over there then why don't you have a look at Vic Claiming races with the prospect to take back to SA??

denzel,
thanks for the advice, I do take it all in. I do not have any contacts in Vic. I think the worry with claimers is there are that many people over here that claim horses and they are already fast class usually. I would think for 20k you should be able to get a reasonable horse without being a champ.  I have one of my trainers in Adelaide put me onto another contact in NZ but I will keep looking.

With 20k in your kick and a father in law to train the horse you should have been straight to Melb yearling sales and bought 2 or 3....Put them in the paddock and given him one at a time to muck around with....
Now thats where you could come across a good one....3 chances I would think 1 would make it, but who knows....All 3 could have.....

I did see an advert on the Greame Board (not sure of his last name) for a mare with filly foal at foot (to million to one) and in foal to Elsu for $25000 complete package.
First foal from mare won 94k and second 53k.  Has had another couple. Tried to talk she who must be obeyed into that but Noooo Biingo.

denzel,
you are on the same wave lenght as me. I wish I could convince the president, but we will see.
If you have and interest in buying this with me let me know. I know my brother in law is into the breeding and if I said look after the mare and foals for nothing and then you get the next one to sell he would see the money signs and I would have that base covered.
I just would not like to give up the filly and the Elsu (colt or filly) because as you know they are a good chance of being good.
Anyway, let me know if you and Geo want to go thirds and I would gladly do it
and break those two in as cheap as I can.
We would break them in train them up and a couple of races and the rest is up to Geo
That just sounds so easy does it not.

If the Elsu turned out to be a filly i think she would go through the Melb APG sales for 15-20k min for just her....Your added bonus is if you can cut down the rearing fees of the foals then it's huge.....You seem to have a pretty good network of people over there that can help so you should see what you could raise together ..
Any mare that can produce a foal that wins 21 races by CHANDON then must be outstanding quality producer...

Rebecca Don went for $11,000 at 2006 sales. Has had 5 starts for 1 win. $5,700 prizemoney so far.
Five Old Tellers went for $8,000 at 2007 sales. Unraced but did run 7th of 9 at Geelong trials 23/12/2007. Trained by John Justice.

Fiery Escapade.....Any horse that can win going 2.00.01 over 2100 sitting in the breeze has to have plenty of ability....Will have plenty of wins in SA if you get him anywhere near that especially only a C2.....
Must have had plenty of change as usually people don't sell horses that are so low in class and won 2 of their last 3.....

Fiery Escapade will be a nice horse in SA.
Charlton is a quick track but still to go 2 minutes over that distance means the horse has something to work with.
From memory I think he is quite a tough horse who does struggle to run a really quick quarter but driving him tough best suits him, he will run 29 - 30 qtrs all day.
Not a bad buy at all Longneck.

Just wondering, as something just doesn't add up...
I watched both lorenzo's runs on the NZ site...Ok first start he went not bad but to bring a horse across that went like he did in that 2nd run seems a huge gamble as he went terrible...Most that people bring across have had a few more starts and shown plenty but haven't had much luck or really tough runs against better opposition and you know will go straight through the classes here...
Both his starts were also on grass and also going in the opposite direction to here which also  must be a question mark....
I am just thinking there must be more to this story and you know something that hasn't been shown in his 2 starts.....Did someone you know go across and trial him our way??
Not having a go at you in anyway what so ever.....Just wondering

Denzel,
I know what you are saying, you can sort of see them via download.
First run: He went to the death as you know and was not beaten far by the stable mate Monet Bromac.  Monet Bromac is for sale for $20,000.  If this one passes the vet check he is landed in Australia for just over $10,000
Second Run: You may notice that a lot of the horses shy at something on the first bend, causing him to follow the one wide line out to a three wide position. The driver on the inside decided stuff you and pushed out, leaving him 3 wide.  He then obviously went ballistic and although beaten a long way it was not until about the 250-350 metre mark that he stopped and lost most of that ground.  I did not think it too bad a run considering barrier 8 (outside the front) caused him to be about 50 metres behind right from the start.  A little concerning was that the winner was a stablemate that was backed in a heap. Lorenzo actaully beat him in a qualifying trial (not that they mean a lot)
The driver of the winner believes Lorenzo is a better horse (so he says)
Yes the starts on grass and the wrong way of going are a concern.  I was told he does skip a bit without breaking, so the tighter tracks here (obviously the grass are big gallopers tracks) are a concern too.  However given his poor run and the fact the yearling sales were on and owners want to be cashed up, I thought it was to time to buy.  If I waited to see more I might have seen him flop and I would have saved money or I could have seen him win a race and watch him price sky rocket.
The point you make about waiting for them to win and then getting them and they go through the classes here is usually right, however I am sure people usually pay $30,000+ for these good horses.
So yeah I have taken a risk, but tried to minimise the cost if you know what I mean. Being a 3yo also means there is room for improvement.
Hope that explains my reckless decision

Denzel,
just got the vet check back and spur on the knee, which after speaking with several people and vets basically can turn into a chip but can also not be a problem, if it does become a problem then it can be operated on.  Vet in NZ says it does not appear to be bothering him.
Also he had a fairly bad repiratory infection. Trainer thought it was a minor cold after last race, but is apparently a lot worse than they thought.  This will obviously clear up and makes me happier that there was a reason for stopping at the time he did.

Longneck,
I would be more concerned about the infection more than the spur.  Racing with a severe infection can really burn a horse out.  Are you bringing  the horse over by boat or plane?
If by boat they tend not to do so well so will more than likely lose some condition.
If I bring a horse over by boat I tend to give it a couple of weeks off before starting on it.

They bought the Albert Albert colt about a week before Flighty Lisa won on debut.
They also agree that the fillies are the best in the family, and were happy when Lisa Don foaled a filly

Makes more sense now....I had in my mind you payed more than double for him than you actually did and then bought FE here for 1/5 of the price with a $400 transport cost to get him to you....
I would get your vet to scope him when he gets here and then again in a months time when you bring him into work so you can see the respitory infection has cleared or if any damage has been done. That is one thing you would be completely wasting time working him if it's not 100% cleared...Little costly but when you win the  plunge at GD first up at 5/1 into 1/3 you will get it back..
The month off will do him the world of good but the challenge will be for your father  inlaw to get him going by july/aug so you can pinch a few of the 3yo free races and he still be a C0 come sept....(planning ahead)
Good Luck..

thanks denzel,
the scoping thing is hard because they have to have had a hard run first, but don't want to work him hard when he has spelled. I think the vet has a machine to sort that out anyway.
5/1 to 1/3 now that would be strange. I take my big money in the ring thinking the bookies will be shaking in their boots and they don't even bat an eye lid. One bookie actually put the price out when I put a bet on once (what does that say about my tipping)
However in Whyalla if a horse is 2/1 and you put a $20 on and watch the odds go in to 1/2 with the only bookmaker.

There have been a couple of examples in NSW in the last 10 years where new bookmakers have turned up at the trots and started letting the punters on for decent amounts.
As soon as the bookies bet up the boat races start and the bookies leave. Who can blame them?
The inbred industry participants only have themselves to blame.

Bookies can lay more than one horse at the gallopers and they keep turning  up every week.
The trotting blokes are that stupid and greedy they manage to bleed the bookie quickly and he stops fielding and they lose their cash cow.

the Albert Albert/Lisa colt was a big thing 17hands i think (Flight Lisa was quite leggy, remember seeing her as a 2yo),but anyhow this Albert Albert couldnt really pace good, didnt want to risk having a prang among other things. As a 2yo was in a yard and went silly, knocked himself out for a day and a half, was stinking hot too and owners never left his side, getting wet towels etc. Think they have found a nice home for him.

can one of you learned trotting people tell me....how far in distance/and or driving time is it from KILMORE to SHEPPARTON ?
The reason i ask is....Nathan Jack drove today in race 7 at Kilmore aboard PUNDIT which jumped at 5.05pm, by the time it was correct weight and he took the horse to the stalls say 5.15pm, then he had to change, and somehow he did all that and managed to drive Dallas Getaway in race 1 at Shepparton which jumped at 6.20pm
Other than levitating or flying by an air force helicopter, how did he do all that so quick ?

I have heard the hot tip from a friend of Nathan Jack and the Jack family. He actually drove from Kilmore to Shepparton in an hour driving blacks a fake.
It looks like he has had a terrible day anyway with only a 2nd in Kilmore and not even getting into the 4 with a favourite and single figure horses.Im my opinion it wouldn't be that hard to get there in 50 minutes.I havent looked at a map but I thought it was closer than 118km's.Are you sure that is the quickest way or just the most convinent way?

LLD..... nothing's wrong with him, geoff just thinks it's in the horse's long term best interests if we give him a rest now that's all.

I went and saw him last week, he's such a lovely natured animal, patted him for about 30mins i reckon i'd trust him around my kids he's so relaxed and laid back.

You can take around 10klms off that klm reading as the track is a fair way out from the town.  You can do that trip in around 1hr and 5 minutes.

what about Charlton to Cranbourne, how long does that take and how far...i remember i drove to Charlton trots once from Melb and i seem to remember it taking over 3 hours, but that was 20 years ago. Dasher Douglas is driving one at 4.58pm at Charlton, then hops aboard Thrills Ahead at 9.20  at Cranny tonight, i spose that's feasable...i still cant get over Nathan Jack doing that distance yesterday in such a short time

Victoria must be smaller than i realised, a trotter called LOOK HERE ROY ran last nite Shepparton race 6 which was around 7pm, and the same horse fronted up today at CHARLTON in race 2 at 1.55pm, and ran a good 3rd at 33/1, these trainers/drivers must have AWESOME fuel consumption in a month/year

Denzel, picked them both up over a week ago. FE had five week off over there and then was jogged for five or six weeks before coming here. He is one of those horses that goes out to train and just wants to run (probably a habbit of training with Manning). However he does not pull, so we just let him canter along. I did ask the previous owner about how much work he really had (be honest) and he assured me he had the 5 to 6 weeks so after a week here we put him in hopples at only half pace. Father in Law quickened him for the last lap and he went very close to a time that would be quickest of any of my horses. Trick is now just to get him fit enough to get another reasonably quick lap out of him.  He looks great and feels great but time will tell.
NZ boy looks fantastic, but that does not win races. He has had one week off since arriving at our stable and will have 2 more and then hopefully be scoped. He is coughing every now and then, but it is that dusty here that could easily be the reason.
On a side issue I almost wish I did not get them now, I originally was going to invest in a Noodlebox store in my town. Predictions of profit over $90,000 a year after paying a manager. Did all the research etc and a couple of family memebers pulled out at vital times. Just got a phone call from my accountant saying we should have a chat, ie he thinks it will go that well he wants to invest, but I will speak to him even though I have almost spent all my investment money (wife bought a pool as well)
Sorry for boring everyone with that crap, but bloody frustrated at what would be a great money making venture.
Anyway Denzel, how is your Trotter going, I know they take a lot longer to get going.

Good news about both of them...Don't worry about the noodlebox...Horses are alot more profitable than a nice secure franchise business.
Trotter coming along ok so far...He is a sundon and nice athletic type so we think he will take time, but whatever he does as a 2yo will be a bonus....

Well went to the Graeme Board sale yesterday.  Some nice lots about but really liked Lot 6 a filly by Safely Kept out of Childers Fury.
She got passed in but we were able to do a deal with the vendor and took her home which we were rapt about.
Hopefully she can turn out to be as good as some in her family.

Geo,
good luck, you would have a couple of young ones now, stables getting full?  I have always favoured getting a young one because it is the unknown that keeps you excited thinking you might have the next big thing.  Taken a different approach this time.  Fiery Escapade trialled on the weekend and was only just beaten by a reasonable fast class horse. His biggest problem is he gets way too fired up. He will go well in the class he is, but once he wins a few there will be better horses just sit on his back and go past him when it counts.  Hopefully will be nominated for Whyalla on 29th March.

Thanks Geo,
Denzel, the prize money is okay considering only R penalty, in fact that is good for SA.  We are very sophisticated we have 1 bookmaker who will give odds of 1.80 fav then 2.00 second fav, 2.40 etc.  The on course tote is great, if you put a dollar on, it is generally the only dollar on the race, this is really the bush mate. In fact if you look up the past results at Whyalla, I think the last meeting was three weeks ago, have a look at the last lap replay of a race and check out the beautiful scenery and the absolutely woeful race caller.  I should head down the finish line like the yobos at the races and get my ugly head on TV.

unbelievable we finished last.  That many people backed him based on his last trial, he was odds on.
the horse was completely different today, had to be hunted to go forward, but after that he was like normal pulling hard.  It is our fault, worked him too hard to get the the race here he has been going much better than that.

Has barrier 6 again, and a smart horse or two in it.  But if he sits and behaves he will go okay.

thanks guys. Yes Denzel, we have a new bit and some martingale rings. Other horse is only been jogging about 4 weeks, couple more weeks we will get to half pace, so still some time to go yet.
Can't believe we are picked for third tonight and only $8 in Advertiser.  I think we will get much longer odds than that though.

can anyone help me with this?
Geo, you are probably the most likely, Fiery Escapade as you all saw finished second last.  Had a tough run, thanks to K.Gibbons pushing him out three wide and the driver opting to go forward rather than hang back.
What I am after help with is that he is so nervous before a race he is shaking visable when  we sadle him up and swetting badly as well.
He must spend so much energy on the nervs that it is worrying.  I know the vet could  prescribe something, but if they are too calm they they will not run.
I am starting to think my original thought was right.  That is, why would someone get rid of a horse (as cheap as he was) when he won the two that he did?
I am going to check for bleeding but don't think that is it. I will persist for a while, but if he does not perform before the end of may I will lease (knowing nobody will buy if he can't win)

Longneck,
You can give them calmer which does help heaps but some horses do not run when you use it.
If you don't want to use it try putting a set of pacifiers on when he is in the stalls.
That tends to work sometimes.
Also with nervous horses I walk them for a fair while before I take them back to the stalls, more you walk them the better.

thanks Geo, I will probably try the calmer and see how he goes trialling him on it. He usually is fine at the trials, but when we saddle him up at race time he seems to know the difference.

Longneck...
When I was with Stuart Hunter we had one that had similar...Tried a few things with him...
1. Would take him to races/trials and just bring him home..Would put the  saddle on him and just leave it...Take him home at end of the day..Know that is hard option for you as not at races most days but if you trial your other one you could try....
2. He would mostly if possible only run at day meetings also as he was worse under lights as they would also get him stirred up...
Was your guy any better at the day meeting compared to the other night??
Wouldn't be sacking him on last run either as can only get fitter and also a better barrier will def help with a softer run....

Thanks Denzel,
No he was actually the same both races. The funny thing is we take him for trials here and does not do it. We took him to the race here and he did it.  Seems to know the difference between trials and races.  Have ordered a calmer. Will give it a go. There are a few meetings at Pirie before end of may so I will give him til then.
Thanks again.

I just noticed a bummer.
Not sure if you recall but last year I said I was looking to buy at the APG sale in Sydney.
I listed a few lots on here, somewhere, asking for opinions.
Sadly, my syndicate fell through at the last minute.
Lot 520 was one of my main picks . It sold for $30K.  I'm trying to covince myself that we would have stopped bidding at 25K.
It has turned out to be EMJAYEM GRAND  winner of the Sappling stakes, Bathurst Gold Crown and the APG

That would give you the shits to be honest but oh well, there will be others.
Our Safely Kept filly has finished at the breakers and what a superb animal she is.  Doing everything to perfection and really looks like she will make the grade at the moment.
Put it this way already knocked back some good offers for her.
