Good on ya Geo, you deserve a bloody good one, hope this is the one, or the next one, or the next one, sorry I lost track you had a few lol
Mate I hope she does the job, keep us informed it has gone a bit quiet on our horses apart from that shitful thing I have.

longneck,
Not wrong.  I have had a few but the thing is if they are no good then there is no point in going on with them.
Got the 2 yearlings now (the pretty chestnut and the safely kept) so that will do me for a while.  Not training them myself as have not got the time at present but am helping to work them now and then.

I'll claim to be a good judge but I better not tell you of the other 5 that I liked
Actually a couple of them have won races but there was a slow one or 2

Baggers.....
Totally agree....Is he coming back to racing or just into work??
Longneck..
I am still in anticipation of seeing your NZ purchase...Hows he coming along?
Geo..
Just wondering what you do with your flashy chestnut after breaking her in...How long do you turn her out for before her 1st prep?

Denzel,
When she came back the plan was to work her up for a month or so before putting her out but she got a cold so we put her straight out.
With yearlings I like to get them going as soon as they come back from breakers.  Put them on a jogger for a few days, chuck them in the cart as well every day even if it's only to walk them for 20 mins.
After a week or so at home get them pacing along with an older horse just jogging (fast enough to make sure they pace)
It's all about teaching them.  Towards the end I sometimes click them up a little depending on how advanced they are.
I then chuck them out for 4-6 weeks on irrigated agistnment in which they usually do very well.

LLD he's coming back racing, fingers crossed he stays healthy and races like a happy horse, that's the main thing for me.

Geo my filly did exactly that, was in work for a number of weeks and only recently just went for a spell. (on irrigated agistment too, i think!)

Geo and Baggers, you are lucky, we just don't get irrigated ajistment around here and not as much rain as in Vic either. Good luck with both of them guys.
Denzel, my NZ purchase is only just starting to hopple fast (half pace)
I am a bit concerned the horse the trainer in NZ considered the better of his two for sale actaully has not won a race or even looked like it after beating ours.
Also the horse that won the second race ours was in (also sold by the same trainer to QLD) actaully has finished 3rd (beaten 19metres) and then nowhere in his two starts in Australia.  A little concerning

Not much irrigation around and you pay a premium price to use it.
Everywhere needs rain and lots of it.

Just got home can you believe it, traffic a shocker coming back through melbourne this evening. Anyway horse finished 3rd (as $1.80 fav) but given where he was at the bell it was pretty hard for him to win. At the time i was satisfied but not happy, if you know what i mean. However he ran (i'm fairly sure) the fastest last 800 of any horse at ballarat today, so that's a positive, especially given Lombo Pocket Watch went around in the first! That'll be my claim to fame for the next decade, my horse ran a faster last 800 than the mighty lombo pocket watch one day at ballarat.... :-)

Pulled up with a heart rate of 80 straight after the race, if that means anything to ya's....

Thumbs up i reckon!

Baggers, well done, you should be happy. I know if they start fav you expect them to win, however it is so hard to get a horse to run a place, be happy with it.  As far as the heart rate goes, G.Webster used to do that with our good horse. I am sure they are looking for if they are trying or not, or how quick they recover.  The thing I have a problem with is if they have to weigh in then they obviously take longer to get back to their stall and therefore take longer for their heart rate to be taken, so it should have recovered a shit load more.  Hope they take this into account.  Webster had Daryl Hart and Neil CRAIG at his property in Adelaide showing him all about the heart rates and as CRAIG always seems to get an ordinary bunch of crows footballers being the one of the fitest going around I assume he knows what he is talking about.  Only trouble is for most of the years you can't send the footballers for a spell.

Baggers,
Heart rate of 80 means he has a lot of improvement in him still (of course depending on the horse).
We used heart rates a lot when I was at Langdon's and after similair time we would expect them to be 70-75 bpm if they were fully wound up, with an ever decreasing time for recovery.

At the risk of Baggers thinking I am putting negative vibe back on this board  I have nominated Fiery Escapade on Friday with a claiming driver I have never met or heard of.
However it is a C1-C3 and he is a C2 so did not want to risk getting barrier 6 again, but I don't hold my breath.

haha i may have put the mozz on myself when i said that, as my guy had a setback soon after i said it. Nothing super serious though thank goodness. We're due to run early next week in a sires heat. Fingers crossed the problem hasnt affected him too much i guess we'll find out soon.
I got a galloper running next tuesday too i love it when my horses are running as opposed to sitting in a paddock somewhere eating grass at 15-20 bucks a day. Life seems to be a little more exciting and adventurous when your horses are in their preparations. Shudder to think what it has cost me to get that feeling though. :-)

This is a very special day in my life, I'm a big soccer fan and Manchester Utd winning Europe this morning was huge for me. I thought when it happened, i cant be disappointed today no matter what my horses do. Well both my galloper and my pacer won! I've done a 3-peat! I've owned horses for 2 1/2 yrs and they've won a combined 6 races before today, now i got 2 in one day! Sorry about all the exclamation marks but what a day!!!!!!!! I feel very blessed. Right now off the net, going to the fridge to crack a beer!!!!

Jeez I wish i had someone to drive me around, Sale 3hrs one way and Terang 3.5hrs in the opposite direction, he/she drives and i sit in passenger seat drinking my arse off. Maybe a helicopter could be an option next time? And a robotic me to read my daughter her bedtime story and also wake up at 5.30am this morning to meet up with the tradies who are doing work for me at the moment. Helicopter can do a stop at the office too, so i can jump out on the way back from Sale and process the pays then jump back in (can in hand) for the flight down to terang!

Only way i can get a helicopter is by doing what i'm doing, I dont think any of the horses i'm in are good enough to earn me the required coin to buy (and run) a chopper. They're pretty bloody expensive you know I heard once that for anything half decent they can cost anything from a couple of hundred grand to over 10 million!

baggers, we all usually wish you good luck and perhaps thought it went without saying.
I had a runner last week in a C1-C2 and I got done a long way even though we continually beat one in a trial that finished third in the C3-C5.
Did not think it was worth mentioning.  Your horse was obviously worth mentioning but we all knew anyway and hoped it went good (hope I speak on behalf of everyone)
I don't care if you run in a maiden or a Group One, you deserve the same good luck from me.
Denzel has obviously told us in other threads he is busy these next few weeks, Geo has his own horses to work, and lets face it I don't think there are many others that actually have any going or looking like it.

Baggers....
Longneck summed it up perfect....
Sorry as was flat out this weekend....
Did watch your guy both weeks.....Basically you were a victim of bad barriers that basically gives you no hope in Group races unless someone gallops or they go a lunatic speed up front......MV track is a disgrace for trying to make ground...Barriers just play to big of part in the end result.....You draw bad and you are F#@#*D...
You had no hope with 1200m to go with a 32.4 first 1/4 (Ironically the same as they ran the week before).....They ran home in 56.2...(56.4 the previous)...How on earth does this give anyone else a chance running home in these splits...100k final and they just amble around....The quicker they get to Melton the better.....
The good thing baggers is you have a horse that has the potential to be M3 and better and you just have to wait for the right luck to come along....Don't worry....It will come along..Hopefully will be in Breeders Cup final......

Not just MV Denzel, almost everywhere in SA.
Frustrating that the Fav always seems to go to the lead and slow it down. Bring back the fines I say, but many would disagree and say if you are not good enough to go to the death and put pressure on then bad luck.

Watched the replay of your guy....Hmmmm Drawing 3 out on the second row over a mile wouldn't really be his go would it??
Maybe you need to get some hard runs into him as I see he had 7 weeks in between runs and he did have those two wins only 9 days apart back in November so obviously doesn't mind hard racing to get him fit...
Would imagine you are a little disappointed with him so far......

Baggers, don't be too concerned about the barrier draws, luck has got to change soon.  I remember with the only good horse I had ringing the board to ask how the barrier draw was conducted after we drew 11 in 3yo sires stakes and 12 in the 4yo sires stakes. Obviously back in the days of 12 runners at GDP.  Just coincidence the country horses had barriers 8/9/10/11/12 Was bitter sweet when we went around the feild to sit in the death with long odds on fav leading and we still out gunned him.  Have not seen what you drew this week but good luck and it will obviously be a big drop in class whatever race it is.
Denzel, yes he had a terrible draw and when the fav has 2 and second fav 1 then you know fav will lead and slow them down it is all over. That is how it panned out. He just can't sprint at the best of times. I gave him a lot of hard fitness work in that 7 weeks.  One trial he lead but was going to slow so Jaydi Byzaman went past him with a rush and at the 400 we did  not look like getting him, but we still got there. He beat the same horse in another trial.  So more disappointing to se that horse run home hard to run 3rd in the C3-C5 race.  Horse is just not putting in now even in trials as he comes back not puffing. That was his last run for us he is now on lease in WA to someone with a sand track and swimming facilities which we just don't have here so hopefully he will get a lot more out of him.
Had the 3yo nominated for Friday Night but could not get a vital couple of runs against horses (will not try by himself) due to rain on weekend so had to scratch.  Hopefully will be a starter in 3 weeks.

Actually Baggers it means you could have drawn anywhere from 1to9 and you drew 9.  If I was you I would be a lot happier with drawing 9 than 4,5,6,7.  So this is a good barrier compared to what you have had.  It is going to be hard most of the time at MV as they most of the time fill fields so that means 12. Every now and then you will go YES what a great draw.
This I reckon is it so good luck

I would be more disappointed in the drive more than how the horse went.....
29.6 second 1/4 coming 3 wide from the rear .....What was he thinking???
Gave the horse no possible hope at all....

Denzel,
have not looked at the times, but the way it was called was that they went pretty hard up front and then tried to settle, which is when he took off (perhaps that is why they quickened again)
However the only reason I suggested in my opinion he was due for a spell was that he did finish a lot further back than he should have.  I agree he had no chance out there, but thought he would have stuck on a bit better that is all.
Baggers, I am sure you get the final word from the trainer driver anyway.

I didn't get to MV friday night so didn't get to talk to Geoff afterwards.

The issue of the drive is a bit of a difficult one for me to address because I'm only 35% owner and the way I got into this horse was quite unusual in that I bought into the horse after responding to a post made on an internet forum like this (serious!). ie with strangers. Makes it difficult because myself and the other major shareholder have two very different personalities and have different life priorities, which of course isn't a bad thing, but it does make it difficult for me sometimes and to give you an example if i infer that Geoff may have buggered up he gets defensive and it sort of creates an uncomfortable vibe between us and I'm not after that at all. If i was the only owner i'd say something (in tactful way of course) to Geoff direct but because we've got a bunch of owners i dont think it'd be appropriate for me to do that.

Just a bit frustrating but hey if that's the worst thing that happens in my life i'm doing pretty good.

I guess if i've learned any lessons from this it's that I probably would prefer not to own a horse with partners again (except syndication company where all rules & policies are stated up front). Not that being in this horse isn't fun or I that I have any problem with any of the people I've met through this horse - far from it, it's been a hell of a lot of fun and they're all really nice people - but I do things a certain way in life and other people have different priorities to me and I just like things done the way i want them to be done. Just a lot easier when you're the only one in charge i reckon, you make your own decisions, you say what you want to say, you dont have to worry about other people getting offended or annoyed at how you like to do things, also not that it's an issue now but even something like having other people handle your prizemoney (great problem to have) it's all just a little bit easier when you're the only owner i reckon. Money goes into your account and you get it the day it's paid, get the statements mailed to you direct, all those sorts of things.

Agree with you on that he was entitled to finish closer as they only ran home in 59.8 and he was beaten 16m but is interesting to note that he "Dropped Knee Boot" during the run...Would be first question for Geoff at what stage this happend...??

Spoke to Geoff and he said horse didn't drop a knee boot, and he pulled up ok. Heart rate was 81, to shed light it was 79 after semi of sires and 71 after final. But he did say he  :censored: ed up the drive. More i get to know him more i think he's a good bloke, he's not too up himself to admit if he gets something wrong. I like that. Dont know what to make of the heart rate thing though.

Baggers,
After such a hard run you would expect that sort of reading, I wonder did he do another 3-4 min later.
Fitness can be measured by recovery rate more than anything imo.  Can also tell you a lot about what else is happening that might prevent a horse from reaching it's full potential, eg internal bleeding etc.

We have the worst form in the race, everything else has won or at least run 2nd in it's last couple of starts!

I'm not confident. Just going to watch with crossed fingers this time i reckon.

C'mon Baggers..

I would hope you are much more astute at doing form than looking at last 2 start numbers.....

Vicbred heat/final you were 4 & 5 rails...With any luck you should lob on leaders back.

Some 1 & 2's on the others are from 3A0&3A1, C0 and C1 races....

Barrier draws, barrier draws, barrier draws is all i have rambled on about at MV lately....Forget last run....Should go from 3 wide last 1300m from last start to leaders back......

You will see a huge improvement with the right run....I will be on..

ha ha yeah i know we're not the worst in it, but i'm thinking like 'prepare for the worst but hope for the best' type of thing.

Very hard for me to be objective with any of my horses, feedback from trainers and knowledgable impartial observers is therefore very important for me.

Denzel, I actually won in 1.57.8 after being 3 wide a lap  does that count?
So stop betting other than on baggers horse, because I got on too for the place.  Gees that winner looks bloody good.  Unfortunately baggers we did not have the speed to hold out that other piece of crap.  Well done anyway.

I reckon the run was very good, nothing wrong with the drive either, just a victim of circumstances, and besides the winner after all was $1.70. And your horse kicked Jayden's Castles arse the "expert's" quinella tip (on the grounds of it's consistency)

Thanks Denzel, yes drawn well for once.
Has taken him a long time to get to this point, very nervy horse, the big concern is first time at the track and under lights. There are times he puts in a couple of bobs and the driver is the only one that can tell so you just can't drive him hard when he does that.
If he does everything right I will be happy. I don't know if the 1 will hand up and with our nervous horse not sure we can push him out too hard anyway. Have also heard the 3, which conections have always had a good opinion of ran a trial in 2.00 leading not long ago so if we can get across the 1 and sit behind 3 would be perfect, but no point thinking about that all good plans never come to.
Just for info, if our horse does well, have a little each way on the 1 in the next, he has been going pretty well, his last trial was probably his worse, but from the draw could go ok. He likes to spend nothing early and come home hard, but might end up too far back if he does that.  It and our horse have been running roughly the same so if one does well you would think the other could, even though he is in a R2-R3 it does not look too strong.  My tipping has been terrible lately so read too much into it.

Well the Whyalla trial form stood up well, with Port Decanter finishing second, it did not pay much unless you were in NSW where, if the T.V. was right, it was over $7.
borolong barney finished second as well.  Only one to let us done was my horse again.  However at least this time we had an excuse. Sat in the death and was still goint okay at top  of straight. Then nearly fell, driver had to pull him to stop him going all the way down and then lost ground sharply. Driver reckons he had the measure of the third horse who was behind the leader at the time, so worse case scenario we would have finished fourth.
However knowing what caused him to almost fall is the concern. He lost a shoe, so I am hoping that was the cause of the near fall rather than it being a result of the incident.  Could have been worse, paid money to get horse from NZ falls and is seriously injured in first race
At least I saw some future in the horse.

Longneck...
He didn't have any luck in the run and did travel ok until 350m....
When the incident happend I thought of something you had wrote earlier...
"There are times he puts in a couple of bobs and the driver is the only one that can tell so you just can't drive him hard when he does that."
Half way around the turn he began to hop and skip and went really rough then seemed to pace ok again for a few stridesbefore nearly falling at top of straight...The concern would be if he did last night what you were referring to him having done before in work and it's what he does under pressure and the shoe coming off was just a by product of he stepped on it when he nearly fell.....
Obviously he will need a few runs and can only improve on each run.......
Look forward to seeing his next start...

denzel, not that I ever doubted what you said, but I watched for myself and gees he was so rough just prior to nearly falling.  I hope he lost his shoe just before that roughness so there is an excuse.  As I said, we have had problems with him being a bit rough under pressure (probably thinks if you want me to go quick I need to gallop as that is how I run fastest)
I think he is going to take a lot of learning and it is very hard as our local trials are with only 4 horses at best and not much pressure, so we have a very hard task with this bloke.

My guy is on friday night again, fingers crossed fellas.

Actually while i have ya's, let me know what you think of this. If you were in a partnership where the other partner controlled the money (HRV paid prizemoney into his account) and he decided the best way to manage this was to settle all monies at the end of his prep, and not pay you when it was paid to him, would you a) consider this normal?, or b) be happy with this arrangement? Furthermore if you were made to feel like you were being anal/rocking the boat/had an issue with things just because you wanted the money paid immediately, how would you react? Honest impartial answers wanted. I'm new to this caper and was wondering what other people might think.

baggers, I would look at it like this, if I wanted/needed the money I would explain that.  It is not hard for the manager to work out how much he has paid you and therefore how much you have left or owe at any period of time.  It sounds like you have joined a syndicate that you are not known to anyone.  I would hope I would not have to get legal about it.  If it does come that way, you can always advertise your share of the horse for sale at the appropriate price and join another one.
Personally I have had a few involved in horses.  The French Quarter and Shipps Charm, both of which were reasonable money earners, without making a profit.  However I was quick to take their money when the were due to pay and therefore just as quick to pay them for a collect (not wanting the money left in my account)  Good luck with it.
Oh and despite only one person wishing me luck in my first start with my new horse , I do wish you luck on Friday.  Hopefully you do not need the luck as bad as I did.

a) consider this normal? No
or b) be happy with this arrangement? absolutely not
Furthermore if you were made to feel like you were being anal/rocking the boat/had an issue with things just because you wanted the money paid immediately, how would you react?  Tell them yes I'm anal and my anus wants what is rightfully mine. If you have been on time with payments when they were asked/due you are entilted to the same.
At worst I'd expect monthly statements from the controlling partner with full details and settlements either way set for standard periods(say 14 days after the statement either receiving or owing money).

I was trying to be a little more diplomatic Arakan, but I must agree with you.
If it does become a problem (ie you think you are not going to get the money) then take it up with HRV first, as I am sure they will have dealt with things like this in the past, hopefully they don't just fog it off as a civil matter.

Only ever a small trainer myself but I take a share in each horse I train doesn't matter how big and manage the syndicate myself.
Each month I prepare statements and letters for the owners and if money owed to them I will do it by bank transfer or cheque whichever they prefer.
This is the clearist way to do it.
If I was in your position Baggers I would want the money at th end of the month.  The problem with leaving it 'in the pot' is that trainers sometimes dream up (if i may put it that way) some of the charges that are on the bill.

Longneck I didnt know your guy was racing until I logged on last night, is that the one you got from NZ? In the past our horse has had some balance issues when racing flat out around a corner do you think that might be the case with your guy too?

Re the other thing thanks for the advice guys i thought that might be the case. It's an unusual situation to be in, and I am very conscious of not ruining the relationship for the sake of future racing enjoyment of this horse.

Out of interest what would you guys think a 35% share of this horse might be worth? I'd value the horse at around 60-80k on performances to date and future racing potential, which would value my share at around 25k - is that just totally unrealistic or could that be a realistic price if were to sell?

Baggers, third well done.  Had a fantastic run in transit and you would have to be worried if it did not run on.  He did so and you can't ask for more than that.  I must admit though, I have seen Geoff drive many a time and it seriously looks like he is pulling something shocking, which means if he has not got the toughness to sit outside the leaders he needs to curb that somehow.
Well done anyway mate, hope you get your share of the prize money.

Good luck bagggers, I have nomintated for friday night but it is an R0 and 3yo are the last to get a run.  My horse finished last in a trial, not all bad, on Sunday, but was coughing after and not sure how long it takes to get over that sort of thing so not confident about him if he does run.
Sorting those issues out amicably is the very very best way baggers despite all the negativity from all of us.  If you can come to an agreement, do it

You can buy it from most equine shops.  It is a green gel that has a peppermint style smell.
Have used it for years and have hardly had a cold etc through any horse.  May be I have had a good run but I was told from an old gallops trainer that he used to use it.

I passed that info on to my brother in law who is taking the horse to Adelaide for 2 runs to save the horse travelling 5 hours getting off the float and running.
He is in again on Monday and drawn 2 again. Gees I would be a lot more confident if it were not for that last trial, but lets see how he goes.

Our guy went good again, Maffioso is just too good for us. I wonder how people would compare Maffioso to a horse like say Lombo Pocket Watch as a 3yo? Same sort of league or was LPW clearly better?

Baggers,
without the issue of a cold I was confident of a win Friday and Monday.  However as is my luck I get out to take him to the trots on Friday and he is lame.  Sore in the shoulder, which means probably a week off so not too serious, but not many more chances for a three year old run before season end.  Also not many nominations today so got a run, we have very few points and therefore will struggle to get a run under normal circumstances it was lucky there are all the Southern Cross heats on at the moment.  So yes very pissed off, just unhooked the float and straight to the bottle shop and sink a few to drown my sorrows.
Did not see your race, but yes Maffioso is a good horse.

Vo, I was aware he won and paid $88.  It is unfortunate you can't have a bet here in SA on those sort of races.  I always like to have a couple of dollars each way on an ex horse of mine.  He seems to be doing what he has always done, pluck a win here and there but not much consistency.  I hope he does well.

Yes Baggers, a bit harsh on the Maffioso, considering he is not in your heat
Tell you what, you never know, one day you say gees I will never beat this horse, and it was the case with me, had a horse from barrier 12 (mentioned it a few times) the odds on pop in barrier 2 in a 4yo final of SA bred, not only did we win we sat in the death and did it.
Not saying it always happens, but better to think I wish Maffioso and Co. make it to the track and we beat them on their merits.
Good luck

Denzel what are you talking about there's only two semi finals not three are you rain man, just kidding mate i'm half pissed.

Good draw now it's up to the horse and Geoff this will probably be the last time we race in such a rich series and whatever happens it's been a shitload of fun so anything from herein is a bonus. If he gets into the final i'll be walking around with my dick hanging out for a week.

Hmmm...Not sure why I wrote three when knowing there is two...
Hopefully you are not in the lockup when he makes the final trying to explain walking around like that...They may even send you to Alabar....!!!!
I remember reading somewhere that Breeders Crown are having series for all years and even a rich FFA on the Day also in the coming years so if you get through Baggers....It may not be your last...
Will be cheering for you Sat night...

Well we're in the final and we've drawn a great gate in 3 (emergency drew 1 so we start from 2) but he was disappointing in his semi and needs a spell. But of course $188,000 races don't come along every day so his little rest can wait for another week thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!

Should be a very exciting day at bendigo even though realistically we probably can't win. Still, you get prizemoney even if you run last, so pressure's off and will be able to just enjoy the day. I'm very happy.

Well done Baggers, hope he goes great for you.
I must make one big complaint to the Bendigo (Backwards) Harness Racing Club.  In their wisdom they are closing the inside upstairs section of the Grandstand to accomodate for corporate functions, Members are not even allowed access to the area.
This is the only inside under cover area around the joint so hopefully it will not be cold and wet or this duck will not be going.
They have kept this fact very quiet to the public so it could turn into one huge disastor should the weather not be acceptable.

Baggers .....

Hopefully I predicted this in my post from a few months back....You have the draw, Now just the luck....Find the fence and hope they go mad.....

GOOD LUCK

I'm hopeful that he'll continue getting better each prep like he's done so far up till now, just getting a friday night win at the valley would be awesome one day fingers crossed.

Thanks geo (OL dont be lazy click the other pages dude!), was a very surreal experience to be honest. Horse ran great the sugarman (good bloke and in my opinion on his way to becoming a great driver by the way) was full of praise. He had everything go right for him so was entitled to come home but then again 55.6 last half is fast in anyone's language and he had to be eased a couple of times in that, and didnt lose ground on the winner and was as strong as anything on the line, so god only knows what might've happened had we drawn the 1 alley instead of the 2. But jeez cant be unhappy with 4th you'd take that 99 out of 100 at the start of the day.

By the way gotta comment on how normal and down to earth so many of the people are in harness racing. Very pleasant experience racing this horse and yeah i know it's easy to be pleased when you have a horse that can run a bit but I appreciate the respect and friendliness too. In gallops i've spoken to Gary Fennessey a couple of times and Bruno, Hayes' other foreman, they're friendly too but not like the harness people. Seems to me in gallops you need a billion dollars for people to look at you seriously whereas in harness it's just like talking to a friend.

I like this messageboard it's a good place for me to sound off even though there's not too many regulars. Virtually nobody in my life is in to harness racing so i need someone to chat about these things with....if you know what i mean.

Certainly do baggers.  I am sort of lucky in that way as grew up in the industry and all my friends are somewhat still involved.
I went out there yesterday to back Living on Fire as it was just 'supposed to win'.  Oh well these things happen I suppose, hopefully the horse recovers fully.
The only other bet I had was Safari as thought he was a moral, backed him pre post thankfully.  Again what a tough win he is a marvel.
Worst drive of the day goes to Nick Youngson aboard Danny Bouchea.  To sit 3 deep when they are going that fast was an absolute disgrace, especially after the way he won the derby.  Really does put the case for professional drivers sometimes, not that I am a big fan of that!!

baggers, great effort buddy, I especially like the fact Geoff chose the wrong horse.  Yes Greg is a good driver and a good bloke, my father in law has raced against geoff and Gregs father here in SA, so two good SA people doing well over there is good.  They are good blokes.  I think Geoff still feels the affects of the accident in SA involving his son and best mate, and lets face it who wouldn't we all feel the pain of our kids.
I especially like the fact that I managed to sneak in a race during the Vicbred program.  Lorenzo Bromac raced and finsihed well back, however I was not too concerned for three reasons.  One I will not mention here, the second was the barrier 6 (outside front) and the third, if you watch the replay he was checked and galloped with about 500 to go and although was not going to win, have a look at the way he finished and that shows you that if you cut out reason 3 and reason 1 you could probably get a place.
This week, sorry to overshadow your big race Baggers, but we are racing for the $1000 overall prize.
Beat that all of you
BE TOLD, if he opens above 10's get on.  Now you would wonder why I would tell people this because my odds would shorten, right?
Well my tipping on the forum is crap and I expect to see people back against him based on the fact I pick him
See if we get a run first.

in my opinion baggers, it is not up to the class, however you would be foolish to travel over there to compete.  Travel that far can take it out of a horse.  If it is just for that race or maybe 2 or 3 then NO.  If he was to stay there for 12 months different story.  Horses/trainers/Drivers over there are at a huge advantage from home track and gee you would want to have a really really big show to put your horse through that.  I hope the manager of the syndicate is not going to do it personally.

I am sure there have been plenty of WA horses measure up to Eastern States in Harness (lots of interdom horses in the past)
Even Gallpers (Placid Ark, more recently before breaking down Plastered, what a horse he looked like being)
So baggers don't underestimate the locals.

wasn't referring to friday night run mate, go for it, referring to WA.
However was in the same situation as far as down in class big time with a horse once, elected to give him a spell, he went super after that spell.  Several preps later a trainer known well to you did not do the same (he had your thoughts exactly) the horse never came back as good and that was that.

Go Baggers
Instead of going to Perth work out how much the trip will cost, then take that much money to the casino and spend it.
Thats all you would be doing if you go to Perth, playing a game of chance. You could travel your horse all the way accross the country  and if you draw a bad barrier on that shithouse track you have no chance and would have wasted your money and time.
At least it will be quick at the casino and you will still have a horse to race next season.

I read your earlier post on him but wondering where you are with this guy as not only has he cost the purchase price but you also had to ship him here...I am not having a go at you in anyway but just wondering your thoughts as no-one wants to just put a match to 10 or 20k (God knows we have more than once)....Totally understand everything hasn't gone to plan but with 8-8 form against company that lets be honest, That are pretty ordinary and running in races with $1000 prizemoney....I am just interested in what plans you have down the track and if you are happy with your purchase...
Have you seen something that could make you think he could get your purchase price back or atleast pay his way???
P.S
Good Luck In this race with him.....

Denzel, I have seen enough to say he is worth the purchase price only (judging by what some people want for their horses on the trading ring)  Add on the transport fees etc and no he is not worth it, give me the money back anyday.
I actaully don't pay up anymore, gave him to current trainer and I get 1/3 of any prize money, which in this race if he could win will be huge mate
I will never get my money back, but decided why pay for the next 5 years or more to feed him as well knowing he will never cover his costs.
I am not actaully sure why he was not put in the 3yo but not my call anymore.
He has had excuses for both those 8's the first being the almost fall and the other checked and broke.  I think he will be a long time before he has to confidence in running not to put in a couple of rough ones (if he ever gets to that stage)
One positive is he is at the races I suppose the yearling I bought with mates (now rising 3yo) is out for another growing spell and has not raced.  Can run about 2.08 on a good day.
Now that I opened by big mouth he has drawn barrier 5, but gees I should get him to swim home to NZ if he can't at least get a place in this.

Having a big rethink now. Lorenzo Bromac finished 17L last today.  There were excuses, he was last and was pushed out three wide and then sprinted around field to the front. Was then tackled in straight and with about 200m to go was probably only 2L off them, but then stopped completely.  Lot of money to pay for a horse that stopped like that even with the excuses.

Longneck,
What was your approx spending on this NZ horse??
I wouldn't go to trading ring either....If i was wanting to get one to have some fun with and that has ability and racing I would do this...
If you were paying 5k to get one here then you would want to be spending over 20k.. I would start watching races everywhere and come up with a list of ones you think go ok but are trained by dud trainers and can be improved...You can easy pick one up here for 20-30k mark thats going ok if you talk to people and do plenty of research...
Even if you just want one for your father in law to have fun with over there then why don't you have a look at Vic Claiming races with the prospect to take back to SA??

I think the worry with claimers is there are that many people over here that claim horses and they are already fast class usually. I would think for 20k you should be able to get a reasonable horse without being a champ.  I have one of my trainers in Adelaide put me onto another contact in NZ but I will keep looking.

Gee Longneck....
With 20k in your kick and a father in law to train the horse you should have been straight to Melb yearling sales and bought 2 or 3....Put them in the paddock and given him one at a time to muck around with....
Now thats where you could come across a good one....3 chances I would think 1 would make it, but who knows....All 3 could have.....

Longneck...

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.....Reading over the posts when you were looking at this guy there was never any real confidence....As long as you learn from mistakes...Hopefully Geo & I will see you at the yearling sales next year...

what a run by Lorenzo Bromac, used up big time to briefly have a crack at lead after being caught wide, then sits outside a 7/2 chance who had a relatively easy run bar the early attack, and had the cheek to forge to the lead and also hold off the 4/1 shot sucking along behind the leader on fence Fourwinds. Shades of Gammalite/Pure Steel
In short, a brutal win, maybe the field wasn't crash hot, but Lorenzo had no right to win with the wide tough run it had either

Vo, arakan etc hope you all had something on him, yes it was a crap race, but we still had to win it and do it tough considering our form.

Bageers/Longneck....
Well Done Friday night.....The only 2 forum runners having a win an hour apart...
Quite a few more wins in both those horses as both went well...
Baggers...We already know your guy is above average and will win many more but special mention for Longneck as you do put your neck on the line by telling a forum about your horses and when they don't perform as expected it can be a little daunting...But when they do crack open the crownies and bask in the limelight that you deserve....
Awesome....What the forum Is all about...

yes you can ask Geo, and I still don't understand why. That is just a lack of driving experience and confidence.  I did not expect him to go to the death as it was 2230 instead of 1800, however when he goes back he seems to pull back rather than just come out fairly and look for a spot and then if one does not present, go back.  As it turned out a spot was well and truly in the running line for some time while he was pulling back and being a couple of lengths last, just can't win from there unless on a champ or getting cheap rails runs all the way, which very rarely happens.
I have not say in matters anymore so I can only wonder also.

Sorry for the delay in responding, been very busy.
The chestnut filly is coming along nicely prob a litle bit behind the Safely Kept filly we have though as she does seem to want to pu her head on her side a bit, once she goes a bit quicker though she does end to straighten out.
I have seem a few other totally western horses be the same actually.  It's nothing a pole or rein burr won't fix but I like to try and get them going straiht by themselves if they can.  Beautiful pacer though when she does get going.
The Safely Kept filly is just a pleasure of a horse, does everything right, just looks to be a real pro.  If she has the speed (which she feels like she will have) she is going to be a very nice horse, touchwood!!!
Denzel, I don't know about the first 2yo race though, hahaha.  Don't really want them going that early.  How is your's coming along??

Bit hard to give much detail about mine as obviously i'm not as involved as you are Geo. Feedback i've got is she's coming along ok but like all 2yo's at this stage she hasnt gone full bore yet, until that happens i spose it's all still a guess. Sorry for the comparatively poor feedback but not really much more i can say. I'm having a lot of fun thinking of a name though, lots of crazy things going through my head like for example at one stage i was thinking of calling her "Hammerthatpussycat" not sure it would get through though. haha

Larsy....

All that comment does is show your pure lack of understanding/Knowledge about Peter Manning...

His training regime revolutionalised training of the standardbred in victoria and most likely australia.....

Terms never tried here before in "Heats" changed many top trainers methods of training from just the grind of basic fastwork lap after lap.....These "Heats" allowed the work to be pumped into 2yo's and work them harder...Also Peter's philosophy was/is to plough an enormous amount of work into the 2yo's and if they can't handle it then he didn't want them.....Where the old thought was if they looked like they needed a spell then give them a rest...Peter thought the exact opposite that if they couldn't take the work then he didn't want a weak horse....

That is the exact reason why Kerryn was able to sit 3 wide and go to the breeze on almost all Manning horses as they were SUPER fit.....

I will challenge you anyday to come with me to P.Manning's stable and ask him about this......F*#k  I will even pick you up and take you to an absolute Legend that probably post vinny has had one of the biggest influences ever on the sport.....

Fair enough LLD, but a bloke had to be an idiot betting in races they had 4,5 and 6 starters in.
On numerous occasions, team driving was blatant and the horse that won was the won they drew up a floor plan for prior to the running of the races.
Don't quote me on this, but I don't recall any 'champions' coming from their yard ie Grand Circuit. Was it just burn out the 2 year olds and reap what we can before they are has beens?

Lombo Rapida was an awesome filly/mare as she won a APG final as a 2yo and also went on......
You are right about burning out the 2yo's but peter never gave a rats arse about horse longevity as he was one of the first to realise the big money was in their first 2 seasons.....
Pelicarama won an enormous amount of money in her first 2 years purely because he didn't care about running her every week...
If you ever see his track the straight is uphill which he thought when they are tired at the end....then they have to work even harder....
Sure he has got on now in years but just take a look at kerryn's amazing stats to realise how he was the Buddy Franklin of training standardbreds.....

I was pretty happy with this run.
(click on race 3 replay)
Galloped for a few strides at the start and cost us a good possy. (went back to second last)
Then went three wide to the death, and race was sprinted home in 2X sub 30 quarters.
Winner actually sprinted home well on the friday night prior (in fact won an R0 then  by 10 metres, and because was already nominated for R0 on Monday it got to run again as an R1)
Sorry, not quite the excitement of baggers group runs, but as baggers would tell you, everytime your horse runs it is exciting.

thanks Ara, was not sure if anybody knew, but thought it was too easy a race to even mention.
Denzel, you are right, however think about the price to take him there for a C0 compared to running in a C0 at GD.  Not my call anymore, I pay nothing so up to them.  The improved form was always going to happen, nothing to run against here and father in law, with all due respect, is without modern methods.  Great trainer and breaker, but if you want the best you have to pass them on.
What the hell was Paul Fidge doing Friday Night we are on a 1.20 pop and going to the death and he decided to keep us out.  So back to last we go.  Then he finished last.  Surely if he takes the sit he does better.  I was impressed we had to come home in 29.8 from last and going 4 wide after already making half a run.  Only a shit race I know, but he is getting better.

Sorry guys, actually i've been spending a lot of time at our weekender down the peninsula and we dont have internet there yet. I did know your horse was running but i got very drunk saturday evening and missed the race (may have passed out before they ran, not sure, can't remember much to be honest). As for C0 v G1 i reckon if you have a horse running it doesn't matter what level the race it's very exciting. When i know that a forum horse is running i set a reminder on my phone and it beeps when the race is nearly due. The night my guy won at MV and LB won at GD i was absolutely stoked when LB kicked back and won, just topped off a wonderful night for me. Would be great if all us internet nerds could meet and have a beer one day, I bet none of us are like the mental picture we have.

lol baggers.  Your story is you were drunk, denzel reckons you were at stud.  Either way sounds like a bloody good excuse.  As for having a beer, well okay I don't mind one now and then.  Lets just hope my horse improves out of sight and goes to an M0 so I have an excuse to go to MV.

thought I would mention this before Denzel caught up with me
We have barrier 6 on Sat night, not complaining though, what comes around hopfully goes around.  I am just wondering if anyone has any opinions on horse 3 (So Deep)
It finished 3rd in the NSW oaks, beaten approx 16 metres, which would be fair form in a C0 from barrier 3

You are right Longneck....She looks very strong chance in a C0 if anywhere near fit as has gate speed and maybe able to jump on the lure...
What a pity you drew so far out again over 1800m....Here's hoping she is underdone and has to sit in the breeze....If that was the case and you get a cart up then look out in the last 30m......Good Luck...
P.S
Some trainers have problems with running a horse week after week but in my opinion it saves you doing fastwork and keeps them race fit......Unlike some of those touchy thoroughbred's that 2 runs in a fortnight and have questions asked if they will back up....
Hell...I won't mention a certain trainer I worked for but a certain horse i remember having 6 races in 2 weeks on numerous occasions....He even had 3 races in 4 days once.....He wasn't fast but F#*K he was fit...lol

Yes it is interesting point Denzel, most trainers if they don't run their horse on a weekend they fast work them or trial them, which in my opinion can be just like a race anyway. Horse had his blood done and everything is perfect.  I do wonder when the horse will say "I've had enough", by putting in a shocker.  i am hoping Vario puts a bit of pressure on for the front but even if that happens I can see them slowing up in second quarter and then we will probably go forward and end up in the death or 3 wide.
Oh well lets hope for a place at least, it is always good to pick up a bit of place money before you go up a class.

If so deep is anywhere near wound up it should win you'd reckon, but shit stranger things have happened. Saturday night strewth i got 20 people coming over to watch the granny the odds are I may be passed out again by race time. even if i do see it i probably wont remember it sunday morning.

Good morning all,
Denzel, each horse is different in terms of how well they recover, how much work they need between races etc.
I like around 10 days between races for most, this is what I do with the average one.
Day 1 - Light Jog
Day 2 40 mins jog
Day 3 a light bit of pace work
Day 4 40 mins jog
Day 5 Fast work (Varies on each horse)
Day 6 25 mins jog
Day 7 40 mins jog
Day 8 Bit of pace work sharp last 800m depending on the horse etc
Day 9 40 min jog
Race day 10 min jog 1s thing in morning then off to races.
This is only a rough breakdown, as I said all horses are different, some with leg prolems will swim more than they jog etc.

How do the ones that race 3 times a week fit all that in?

Latest trial result on Sunday might tell you how forward So Deep is Baggers.  Won an open trial, Mile Rate 2.03 and last half 58.0

So if she leads (as expected) and gets a soft run, we know she can do at least 58.0 last half, more likely even quicker. So lets hope for pressure or we need to go to the death and do something special.   Would love to have drawn 1 and been right behind her.

Larsy,
Happens more in SA, Qld where the prizemoney is down a bit.  They will give them easy days in between races to freshen them up.

denzel,
that is hilarious.
My mate Damian Wilson actually worked out at his place for a year or so when they had Hazza Bazza etc.
I can tell you his horses did not do that that when he was there!!!
That is very funny though.

Onya BYA.
I know you now only have a bit of him know but I love that he can do work and keep coming.
A nice bit of fun I think you'll have with him over the next little while and hopefully beyond.
Enjoy it.

thanks Denzel and Ara.
Unfortunate the fav gallops, but there you go, that has happened to us before.
Trainer was with me 400+ kms away and drinking my beer but still his heart was beating faster than mine.  I paid for the beers I should have a faster heart beat.
Anyway, it is only a C0, but a win is a win.
\Ara, yes I don't get as much as if I paid for his training fees, but I do Own him 100%.  I just have a deal with BIL (brother in law) and his mate that they pay and I get 1/3 of the money.  Good to see he is more nervous than me.  Thanks again guys

Longneck...
I do think though if she presses on at the start the lead was clearly there and you win by 200m.....(well maybe a little less).... Couldn't understand handing up the breeze...
Do you know the answer??

Denzel,
yes we were a bit suprised she did not press on. However she probably remembered the one time she tried to hunt him up a bit at the start and he galloped.  So she was probably not concerned about sitting in the death and did not push him to the lead.
However we will need better runs in transit as we get up in class.
How lucky were we that the fav did not get to the breeze and then gallop, because he is a very nervy horse and has galloped in sympathy with others before.

A contributing factor to the fav galloping when it took off in search of the breeze was yours kicking up to make it work a little harder to get around

Lets hope so OL as I would hate to think she was going to let the fav in after it galloped and had to work hard.  That would mean she thought we had not chance of beating it.  I know I am the supreme optomist but I thought we had a slight chance of beating her anyway, but did not bother me if we got second if we had the tougher run.
Thanks for the comments straight after the race last night guys, that is one of the things that makes it enjoyable is getting on the computer after the race and seeing all the comments, and hopefully sharing the joy.  Cheers all

cheers Geo and baggers.
Baggers, always thought he had some ability, but was just an awful pacer. He has only won maiden class races so far but it is the way he has gone that has suprised me though.  I thought he would have to be a sit sprinter (and as you get up in class that is usually best) but he has put in a couple of tough ones.  Lets hope there is more.

Yeah hopefully we both get more....I sort of took it for granted, my pacer winning my gallopers winning, then two weeks ago the 3yo galloper hits himself causing a 12cm long & deep cut and damages a tendon and is out for 6 months. Never mind, i have a 2yo filly having her first start this weekend so that's got me excited again, thats the thing about this caper you always gotta look forward dont you.
