A livid Jim Cassidy was fined $200 for excessive use of the whip aboard Budabar, who he steered to a narrow win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Cassidy was furious when stewards hauled him in to explain his actions aboard the Jim and Greg Lee-trained gelding prior to the final 100 metres.Stewards charged Cassidy for striking Budabar on three consecutive strides.
“I think these blokes that set the rule must have been 100 or not know what they’re talking about,” Cassidy said. “The rule is ridiculous.
“There’s no way he would have won if I didn’t ride him like I did.” Meanwhile, Blake Shinn also found himself explaining his actions aboard the Clarry Conners-trained Albertinelli in the AJC Convention Centre Handicap.
Stewards questions Shinn over a perceived lack of aggression by the rider in the early stages of the race but they accepted the rider and trainer’s explanation.
Conners described Albertinelli as “a bit of a slug” before Shinn explained he thought there was a lack of speed in the race outside of the eventual winner Herculian Prince.
“We thought there’d be no speed in the race and everyone must have read the form the same as me because they all wanted to go forward,” Conners told the inquiry.
Stewards also told Shinn he “erred” by not putting himself into a run passing the 700 metres but they found his actions were not blameworthy and took no further action.
Stewards also charged apprentice Josh Adams with careless riding out of the Rosebrook Handicap but the matter has been adjourned until Friday.
Margin over the 2nd horse was 0.2L
