Clifford Park, Toowoomba, is one of the State's largest training centres, supplying many winners to tracks around SE Qld.

In a controversial move, the Toowomba Turf Club installed a new Cushion track as the course proper in the first half of 2009.

The first meeting on the new surface was held on Saturday, July 11, 2009.  The meeting was run in the late afternoon/evening under "metropolitan conditions" and included the historic Weetwood Handicap and Toowoomba Cup.  Before a crowd of 8000, visitor VOICE COMMANDER won the Weetwood for young Nick Olive; JUSSEMI won the Cup for local Rex Lipp.

Let's use this thread for comments on racing at Toowoomba.

Funny you say that DD, I was booked to go to one but was cancelled due to poor patronage. Badly organised I suspect. Black Tie seemed to be a big turn off.

J. Kehoe on Zeditave Plus which won the second at Toowoomba last Saturday night.  He was thrashing this thing from the 600 - no mention in the Steward's Report - what is doing there with the whip rule, or was it backhanders all the way?

From Toowoomba Chronicle:

CLIFFORD Park's Cushion Track surface will undergo its first major overhaul next month.

Toowoomba Turf Club (TTC) will close its course proper between February 5-9 while work takes place to "rejuvenate" the Cushion Track compound.

Trackwork will be restricted to the sand and wood-fibre tracks during the closure.

The work, which will introduce fresh Cushion Track material into the surface, is the first significant upgrade of the track since it opened in July, 2009.

Club CEO Aaron Clancy said the work was aimed at causing minimal disruption.

"It's a rejuvenation of the surface using Cushion Track material from a stockpile we retained after the track was originally laid," Clancy said.

"Some of the existing surface will be scraped off before the new material is added and then it is all blended from top to bottom.

"It's a slow process but our aim is to get horses back on it as soon as possible.

"The cost is minimal and will be met by the club."

The club last month received a $159,500 Queensland government grant to assist it with maintaining training facilities.

The payment was part of a $2 million package for Racing Queensland Limited's Training Track Subsidy Scheme.

TTC will also begin staging monthly grass jumpouts from next Tuesday at Gatton's Burgess Park.

Gawd, looked a great night for racing on the Downs tonight.

But looking at the results, punters - few though they were - have cleaned up.  Thumb Up

Major problems for last night's meeting when a downpour arrived:

(from RQL)

GENERAL

Prior to the running of Race 4, the racecourse was inundated with a torrential electrical storm in which an extraordinary amount of rain fell in a very short period of time. During this storm, the track lighting failed for some minutes on 3 separate occasions. Due to this, the stewards ordered that all races be put back one race time slot. Following the rainfall, a number of senior riders and stewards inspected the course proper, particularly at a section of some concern between the 1000m and 1100m. Upon inspection, it was found significant surface water was present. A section of the track near the 400m to 350m was also of concern. It was decided by all jockeys in the presence of members of the Committee that every attempt be made to continue with the meeting and it was decided that the appropriate machinery be utilised to try to recover the 2 sections of track near the 1000m and the 400m. As a result of this delay, all races were further put back one race time slot. After this attempt at track rectification, the jockeys were then satisfied that the section of track near the 1000m was suitable for racing. However, after 2 separate attempts at the track rectification near the 400m, the surface water was still present and significant enough for them to have concerns with the safety of that section of the track. After receiving this advice, the jockeys inspecting the track were of the opinion it was unsafe to continue and therefore the remaining riders at the meeting accepted this advice and unanimously agreed that it was not reasonable to continue with the meeting. Therefore, stewards decided, in the presence of the Committee of the Club, that the remaining races on the program be postponed.

Was looking up results of Twba races last night & was wondering what happened to Twba being abandoned.
I nearly dropped off my chair when their was such a detailed explaination.
Whoever wrote that needs to be congratulated.
This far exceeds the normal response. Well done to whoever you are!  Thumb Up

G, Toowoomba is bad at the moment. Thick fog the last few weeks. Tonight you could only see the horses 2 seconds at start, 2 seconds at finish. How does one go about analysing the horses with that vision chin
I am a diehard Toowoomba fan, but dont have a clue about the times run or how to explain the regular 10 length winning margins chin

Know of some country races many years ago when the fog or rain was so thick jock would jump off his horse in the run and double up on another horse for a couple of furlongs then hop back on his mount and canter away for an easy win. Shhhhh don't tell anyone about this.

What a shambles it was last night (and Friday night at Caloundra).  Thumb Down

These Cushion tracks are the godsend of racing - as we'll be told.

Tote holds would not have paid the electricity costs.

Was exciting stuff hearing Pat O'Shea and our UK visitor in Sky's studio describing FOG.  Sad

One forumite has snuck in a runner at Toowoomba today without a murmer.  This bloke is renowned for finding a good horse from Victoria.  I recommend an investment on R4 # 14 Pliers.  Munce to ride.

Would be nice to get a risk assessment on that bet from the source.

In R5 there are some nice odds to be got about #4 Port Raider.  I was with connections last time this ran on a very heavy track and the run was OK and they were smiling.  They havn't mucked around and went for the big $15k prizemoney today....expect something.  #8 Snipzu is the obvious danger.
