What is the purpose of giving a tip ? Tipsters do not tip for tipping's sake.
They tip in the paper, on the radio, or on Tvn / Sky to give punters guidance to aid  punters in their selection of bets .
Surely each tipster expects his tips  to win, run a place or in Steve Moran's case, " be in the mix".

I reckon every one of them do it to get paid money. I doubt any of them care if it's a guidance to aid punters in their selection of bets.

BTW the best selling form guide BEST BETS could no possiblly be named  BEST TIPS, as according to your logic, as the words are not interchangeable.

I recall the "Best Bets" publication had a competitor called " Top Tips " back in the 70's, I think. The size and format was very similar. 

Top Tips , Top Bets, Best Bets, Best Tips, all seem interchangeable to me.What do you reckon Arakaan ?

I'll advise of a section on each race right next to the tips. It is called.......................now wait for it................................................suggested Bet.

More often than not they tip 5 horses but advise to bet one.

This is on every single race they publish.

but your right the words are the same. Why would they make the distinction.

So the 'suggested bet' is not amongst the 5 tips or is it another tip that they suggest one should bet ?

As Ara it's only a fun thing.

I admit I'll throw the occasional tuppence on an omen bet. I never expect to win, I never bet much, but sometimes they do salute at good odds.

My dictionary defines  tip as " a hint or piece of special information supposed to be useful in betting ", so now we have tips/ hints. Maybe in tomorrow's paper we might see a "Hinters' poll" replacing " Tipsters' poll" and no longer tip/ bet of the day but hint of the day.

of course it is. the point being if only 1 of the 5 is a bet what are the other 4.

How can they be tips but not bets?

According to you that is impossible. 

How do they claim, in promotional advertisements, a week later that they picked X number of quinellas or trifectas if they only make one suggested bet per race ?

Suggested that Amazing Bubby was not an omen tip today as it would only have been relevant the day after the AFL Grand Final..maybe so, maybe not.
I recall a couple of horses that were huge unders on the tote everytime they went around..Mums Pride, Uncle Willy, etc..they were omen bets/tips because everyone had a Mum, an Uncle Will etc... omen tips apply throughout the year. Amazing Buddy will be popular throughout the footy season even if Buddy is kept to 3 or 4 goals in a game.

well I never said they only ever give 1 horse did I. I understand the englsh language is one of the hardest so not surprising that these things happen. I will refrain from the use of the phrase "more often than not" as it is apparently interchangeable with everytime.

sometimes the suggested bet is to box 3 in a quinella, or 4 in a quinella, or back 2 horses etc.

The tips are just that. Tips. Then the suggested bet it what it is, the betting advice which can take 1 of the 5 or 2 of the 5.

Thats the point. The distinction is made as clear as day.

The first post that mentions bets is your first post in this thread. You remind me of "Hangman" on TNHRCF in the Terry Kennedy thread. Come onto a thread meant purely as lighthearted fun with a speech on the perils of omens and the losses they involve.

I don't know about you chaps, but I'm certain my punting would be stuffed without the hordes who follow tips.  God bless them, because they've sure copped a pizzling down the years
