Racing Retro gives Brisbane racing a very scant coverage  most of the time but with no metro meeting in Melb Sat Brisbane was in the spotlight and finally some on point comments were made about the out of kilter percentages bet by the bookies in the Brisbane ring compared to Sydney.  Ronnie quoted one race of 104% compared to 140/150% in Brisbane.Somethings got to be done said Ronnie a sentiment we,or most I expect, would agree with.Bet with the corporates was one suggestion he put forward. We're already doing that.I think the Clubs  and QRL should  front the bookies and put some pressure on them. One thing they could do is open the ring up or threaten to do so as bookies don't like competition. Get Tidy and others a license to field And if Brisbane bookies are bad how much worse are their Gold Coast mates I've seen percentages over 200% at times and hardly ever get below 150% at starting. Thumb Down

That moron in charge of Queensland Racing should be looking more at issues like this and updating their pathetic and un-user friendly website rather than obsessing about cushion tracks.

Too bad he is clueless.

If it was my Racetrack they would not be allowed to take a bet until their Market Percentage was less than 125%.

Nothing will change.

The leader of the ring in Brisbane is a Berntley apologist and only has a license due to his "friendship" with Bentley.

All part of the incestuous nature of racing.

agree that %s are terrible, but a flipside to this is,some of the races in qld, lend themselves to bookies betting a higher%,ie,big field of maidens, with not a lot of disclosed form, sydney bookies wouldn't get anywhere near 104% on a race like this,ps,take robbie waterhouse out of the sydney ring, and the % goes higher, the corps will probably bet a better % on this type of race, but remember, they're not obligated to bet you to lose a certain amount.
also agree that it shouldn't be a closed ring, open it up,seems a restriction of trade to me

I overheard ( not an eavesdropper by habit, though) the leader of the Brissie ring tell someone he was making about 6%. Doesn't leave much room for improvement % wise in those markets.  Plenty of vacancies for anyone wanting to better the percentages being offered, start swinging the bag !

I believe were  bookies  able to access the insight offered by betfair layers on their racecourse stands, things would be very different. Bookies inside info is not as good as yesteryear. The people who supplied mail in the past need only lay them for themselves, and cut out the middleman.

The Brisbane Bookies on Saturday at Doomben served up a 160% Top Fluc Market for the Open Company race won by Ghetto Blaster.

Translated it means that if they were running Two-Up and you had a $1.00 on either Heads or Tails and won, then you would win $0.25c, but if you lost then you would lose your $1.00.

I'm guessing that they were holding a bit of Top Fluc money for the fancies and contrived to ensure these punters were stitched up. Ugly.

Plenty of vacant stands there Grega for you to become the ring mover and shaker, and offer better odds.  chin

Max, you said that in your previous post.

So every complaint we might have you would recommend starting up a rival business and offering a better service - Telco's, Taxis, Restaurants etc

Once is ok but it becomes inane when it is repeated.

I'll excuse myself on the grounds it was a long time between posts.  wink  However, it's still a valid riposte. How can you compel bookies to bet better percentages ?  If you set some arbitrary percentage, say 130%, they'd have to walk; if they didn't, I'd join you in condemning them.

Excused.

As you suggested (twice  smiley)- competition. Colin Tidy bet 135% fixed odds SP on this race, which although not great it is a lot better than the poor buggers oncourse were served up by the blokes that should be able to frame a more accurate market.

Allow them to view Betfair odds, and prices will improve  market % wise, but probably no great difference with the live chances.

If you follow Lindsay Gallagher's betting ring report on JR . . .  (Yes I am a heretic)

. . You will know that the satchel swingers in Brisbane haven't won since the blacks were bad . . but I have no doubt about his statement that the only horse they could lay in the last was the winner (1.80 into1.60) . . thats 55%  to 62% (av. 58 to pay 100)  . . is that low enough for the bookies lynch mob??? . . . And as Max repeats (at irregular intervals) there are vacant stands in every ring . .

Two stories . . perhaps they should be on the jokes page, but I am told that both blokes were serious

A bookie, who claimed to lose every Saturday, when asked why he didn't give it away, replied, "I can't its my only source of income."

Another bagman, who also was a regular loser, managed to win 3 million in the lotto.
His mate opined that he would now be able to be able to hang up his bag
"No," replied the bookie "I'll just keep standing up till it's gone!"

If ya listen to some people, though it does not matter, winning punters pay for these guys to stay in business. Dragons........
