As a former 'young member' of the SAJC and a regular racegoer I will be making the effort to attend the last race meeting ever at Cheltenham.  Like most of us these days we do not need to leave the comfort of our own lounge rooms with foxtel and internet/phone betting to enjoy the races.  A day at the races for me now is used as a social gathering to catch up with friends and will be looking forward to the SAJC putting on a big day for the last Cheltenham race meeting..

Farewell to Cheltenham - 21st September 1895 - 21st February 2009
Be part of this historic event - the last ever race day at Cheltenham!
Cheltenham - 21st September 1895 - 21st February 2009

Cheltenham Park Racecourse has been a cornerstone of South Australian racing since 1895. The track has played an important part not only in local racing but the surrounding community for over 110 years.

Over the years legendary horses, jockeys, and trainers have plied their trade over its surface... but the time has come to say goodbye. Join past and present industry participants and racing fans as we gather on this historic day to farewell Cheltenham.

Navajo

I've never been to the Cheltenham track but did manage to find a few winners there over thew years.

I suppose it seems to be the way of the future with more and more tracks or racing centres being closed down for what ever reason.

It's history will always be there ...long after the track has been bulldozed

Enjoy your last day there. Thumb Up

Cheltenham is my favourite track in Adelaide (also only 10 mins away too).  From my understanding the track has been sold and a small part is to be dedicated as wetlands and the remainder will be used as new housing developements.  This only leaves us with Morphettville as a metro track with future upgrades planned for that track.  I will be getting together with some friends for a big social day and maybe even a punters club for the day so heres hoping I can go out with Cheltenham on a winning note..... biggrin

Yep, Victoria Park is gone, the facilities and granstands were disgraceful and plans too revamp the course were knocked back by council so SAJC has wiped their hands of the track now.

Great track, as seemed to handle repeated racing' even heavy rain, the fence always held up...... GEE fancy carving up your assets and getting rid of your best track,  they really have let down their forebears these S.A administrators, i guess they failed on a lot of levels.........i remember being SHOCKED at their bookies 10 years ago.....turned out the clubs only wanted a few old bookies, no one could get a license.....of course that type approach ineveitably led to corporate bookies.................making it harder for racing returns...disgraceful really

High rate of attrition there.....first of the metro racing areas to hit the wall.

Sad but it is a bit of a reality check for Aus racing in general.

WA seems pretty healthy, courtesy mining boom no doubt, but there are no pokies  in the west are there? Those things have cut badly into racing.

I'm a bit surprised and disappointed that the SAJC are not throwing open the gates for the last meeting at Cheltenham but I guess they are expecting a huge crowd and don't want to miss out on the opportunity to make a few bucks.

SA were the first to merge their Metropolitan Raceclubs and now two out of their three tracks are gone and they still pay $25k for a Sat Metro race. Doomben the next to go with the merger of the BTC and QTC followed by Canterbury and Warwick Farm after the merger of the STC and AJC. In Melbourne Sandown and MV will both eventually go.

We are selling the family farm to pay for our governing bodies incompetence.

Once upon a time racing in each state was run by one of the raceclubs, and then we introduced a new level of governing bodies which now want Metro clubs to merge so that they can rationalise everything.
