Toowoomba Turf Club
Mr HORAN (Toowoomba South—LNP) (9.31 pm): The Toowoomba Turf Club and the racing
fraternity in Toowoomba and on the Darling Downs are facing a most difficult decision. Because of the
enduring drought of the past few years, the club made a decision to accept an offer of some $10 million
from Queensland Racing which included $4 million from the Queensland government for drought
proofing of the Clifford Park racetrack. This meant a cushion track but unfortunately it meant no grass
track like other places such as the Sunshine Coast have.
The well-meaning and experienced people of the Toowoomba Turf Club put a lot of thought into
this. It was a very difficult decision to accept the offer and install the cushion track and the associated
improvements. There has been considerable opposition to this by the Trainers Association in
Toowoomba, and it has become a most unfortunate incident. But, to the credit of the Toowoomba Turf
Club, it has moved to have a special meeting of the club next Monday. That meeting will be to resolve
this once and for all in the interests of harmony. That is what the club is trying to do, to bring harmony to
thoroughbred racing in Toowoomba.
But in steps the dictator—Bob Bentley, the Chairman of Queensland Racing, with one of the most
vitriolic and vicious attacks on the Toowoomba Turf Club and the good people of Toowoomba, the
thoroughbred racing community on the Darling Downs and in Queensland. He has threatened the big
‘get square’ if the vote goes against the cushion track. That is one of the most insulting and unfair things
I have ever heard happen to the racing people of Toowoomba, our city. Regardless of which way the
vote goes, this dictator should not be in there threatening to take away TAB coverage, threatening to
take away night racing from Toowoomba, threatening to change all the things that the club has built up
over the years just because it will not go along with what he wants and because people are going to
have a democratic vote.
This has been a most difficult decision for the committee. They have researched it carefully and
they have made the decision. But I have had calls from people who support the committee and people
who are against the decision. They are appalled that the chairman of Queensland Racing should single
out a club like Toowoomba—which has been going since the mid-1800s, with over 600 horses in work,
and is the heart of thoroughbred breeding and racing in Queensland—with this vicious attack.
Leave it, Mr Bentley, to the people of Toowoomba to decide and then it is your job to support
Toowoomba. I do not believe he is fit to hold the job and I believe that the minister should step in and get
rid of Queensland Racing and Mr Bentley because all they do is attack country racing, attack the city
clubs, attack Toowoomba racing, attack the good people who make decisions in good faith and who are
going to have a democratic vote on where they go from here. He is not fit to hold the job.
