Danny Brereton

Article from Spring Racing Carnival

Born, February 7, 1965

Danny Brereton admits he is a traveller. Even at 41, he admits the lure of another overseas riding assignment, if it came along, would be tempting. Brereton comes from a racing background. His father Terry was a handy jockey. As a kid, Brereton agrees he was unsettled. He started his apprenticeship with noted mentor, Caulfield trainer Frank King. “Frank and I decided to part company,” Brereton said.

Next to take on the young jockey was Ray Martin, then followed the strict disciplinarian Bob Hoysted at Epsom, where Brereton finished his time. His first winner was Fine With Me at Kilmore in 1981, as a 16-year-old apprentice. Brereton had increasing weight problems, so he accepted a permit to ride under a higher weight scale in Hong Kong in 1987. He was one of the first Victorian jockeys to move to the then British colony. He stayed there for six years, then did one year at Macau in 1994 before returning to Melbourne in 1995.

Trainers were quick to grab the “new and improved” Danny Brereton. He had refined his skills in the competitive environment of Hong Kong. He became noted for his good hands and patience. It was one of those patient rides that won him his first Group 1 win – the 1997 Blue Diamond Stakes on the Lee Freedman-trained Knowledge. Within months he had won another two Group 1 races, on the brilliant Al Mansour in the QTC Sires Produce Stakes and Group 1 Castlemaine Stakes, both at Eagle Farm. Brereton has made the occasional trip back to Asia, riding in Macau, Malaysia and Singapore. He is stable rider for the Cranbourne-based Michael Kent, and also rides for Brian Jenkins and Colin Little.

First winner: Fine With Me, Kilmore, 1981.

First Group 1 winner: Leica Smile, Australasian Oaks, Morphettville, 1996.

Group 1 wins (to August 1, 2006): 7 (five in Australia)

Ta Magic!!

I now realise why it takes a child a year to walk, because the brain, spinal and nervous stystem is complex along with the other bits and pieces like function

I am so amazed by this man, we have learnt so much and what we have encounted is so confronting and so
very real.

Strength to you and your family  Thumb Up

Thankyou so much!!! I just really hope that we can inspire and encourage any one in this situation.
I cant begin to tell you what a journey this is. One day I will talk more openly about it all but for now
I can only thank you all for your kind thoughts and the realisation that things like this are very real.

On a brighter note, our son's golf pro said today that he wants him qualified for Vic Open Golf in the new
year. Hes 16 - Dan has alot to look forward to!! Dans ambition is to walk a hole of golf and walk our
beautiful staffie Diddles on the beach and see his son and daughter grow up to be beautiful spirits, thanks xx

It is funny Crimson ....

I have thought quite often, about how I would cope being in that position.

I guess being in this industry, I know quite a few people, jockey's, trackwork riders, who have been in serious falls, and a few of them are in wheel chairs, and will be for the rest of their lives, and it makes you think about these things.

The one thing I keep coming back to, is no matter what ever happened to me, the only thing I would want in life, is to watch my children grow up, and to still be a part of their lives.

I guess this is the one thing that Danny has driving him, and to look forward too, because with out family, what do we really have

Good grief DD, what is a member blog?? Its hard enough for me to keep up with how to change foxtell channels
between Sky and TVN

Dan coming home for Christmas Day and then back for another 4-6 weeks in rehab. Its 4 months today since the fall.

It was really cute today at rehab, there was a Chinese guy and we know how Chinese love their racing.... he said
to our kids.... "Is that your Dad? Hes so famous (lol) and took a photo and started texting his friends... Dan had a chat
to him and he was wrapped. How cute is that!!

Hey that's great news that Dan has made so much progress and is learning to walk again - wow!
I remember speaking to him once when I was a nipper of a journo and he never even laughed when I asked a stupid question, he was cool!  biggrin
Good luck and I hope you have a brilliant Christmas and New Year and 2011 is a great one way walk

Hi everyone, its been a long time for me to post, I guess life is just incredibly busy.
Dan has come home after 6 long months in either one of four hospitals and rehabilitation
which makes us and our staffie diddles so happy.

He is working so hard and commuting to rehab for most of the week. His movement which
was not expected is slow and very difficult but his strength and determination is what is
making it happen. Very very proud of Dan and all that he is doing.

Happy Blue Diamond Day!! I hope you all back a winner !!

Hi Crimson,

I'm glad the slow progress is coming on.  Would Dan be open to a story on him in the media--say Sky Racing---or is it a bit too early ?

We really support his strength.

Go getem Dan---and back Atomic much more for the Drum in the Blue Diamond   Thumb Up

Let me add my good thoughts - always transition to go from being in hospital to back home - most of it's good - hope it's same for DB.

As I hope you see - there's a lot of people wishing and hoping for the best in the road ahead.

All the best  smiley
