Danny Brereton

Article from Spring Racing Carnival

Born, February 7, 1965

Danny Brereton admits he is a traveller. Even at 41, he admits the lure of another overseas riding assignment, if it came along, would be tempting. Brereton comes from a racing background. His father Terry was a handy jockey. As a kid, Brereton agrees he was unsettled. He started his apprenticeship with noted mentor, Caulfield trainer Frank King. “Frank and I decided to part company,” Brereton said.

Next to take on the young jockey was Ray Martin, then followed the strict disciplinarian Bob Hoysted at Epsom, where Brereton finished his time. His first winner was Fine With Me at Kilmore in 1981, as a 16-year-old apprentice. Brereton had increasing weight problems, so he accepted a permit to ride under a higher weight scale in Hong Kong in 1987. He was one of the first Victorian jockeys to move to the then British colony. He stayed there for six years, then did one year at Macau in 1994 before returning to Melbourne in 1995.

Trainers were quick to grab the “new and improved” Danny Brereton. He had refined his skills in the competitive environment of Hong Kong. He became noted for his good hands and patience. It was one of those patient rides that won him his first Group 1 win – the 1997 Blue Diamond Stakes on the Lee Freedman-trained Knowledge. Within months he had won another two Group 1 races, on the brilliant Al Mansour in the QTC Sires Produce Stakes and Group 1 Castlemaine Stakes, both at Eagle Farm. Brereton has made the occasional trip back to Asia, riding in Macau, Malaysia and Singapore. He is stable rider for the Cranbourne-based Michael Kent, and also rides for Brian Jenkins and Colin Little.

First winner: Fine With Me, Kilmore, 1981.

First Group 1 winner: Leica Smile, Australasian Oaks, Morphettville, 1996.

Group 1 wins (to August 1, 2006): 7 (five in Australia)

I heard last night that Dan is partially paralysed. Apparently he has the use of his arms only. Very sad news indeed.

I've tried a few times to start some form of punter's club where any winnings goes to the injured jockey's club.

Surely we could afford fifty dollars each per year.

You would have to get someone that we could trust to handle the money and also had the time to control it all.

I wouldn't be able to do it and I suppose other people are like me and have two much on our plates.

One day someone might come up with a idea that would work.

Yes, very sad news indeed.

Danny,my thoughts are with you and your family.

To Gratlog and others who might be interested - on the National Jokeys' Trust website is information on how one can make a donation to a most worthy cause.

Let's wait for official news as I've read all sorts.

Gratlog feel free to PM with more details as you care - I'm not sure what you have in mind but this seems like a good cause - personally - if we can do anything collectively to assist I'm interested.

Steve, not sure on what the best way to do it.  A few of us kicked the idea around a few years back but the problem of handling the money over the internet was a problem and we decided to just do our own thing.

Without the jockeys we wouldn't have this hobby.

In a perfect world I would like some forum to charge a certain amount for the right to post and so much of that money to go to this type of charity and maybe the rest into comps.
Probably too hard to do on a forum this size and membership would drop alarmingly biggrin

We have been doing charity bets between a few of us for years. We might just have $5 on something and if it gets up we put that into kitty.  That is at our local area but it would be harder on a internet forum due to the money.

Then again after the great calcutta robbery, maybe we don't trust people on forums so much biggrin

Summing up it is probably filed away into the too hard basket.   While my main charity is Legacy I will send a few bob to the Jocks when time permits.

Dan is in rehab after being discharged from the Austin spinal unit. His  'superficial' injuries are healing well as in broken collar bone,
fracture to neck vertabrae, multiple broken ribs and punctured lung. He underwent back and heart surgery. The remaining concern
is the damage to the spinal cord caused by the breaks in his back vertabrae which has left him with  no movement below the level of injury.
We wish Danny and his family our thoughts to the great rider and if anyone can turn this around Dan will try
his hardest with his guts and determination.

I've obviously been living under a rock. I just heard the terrible news. My thoughts and best wishes go out to Filly and DB and their family.
I will always fondly remember Filly's wonderful hospitality when I visited Macau way back in 2002.

Has been some news recently - fingers crossed all - this is sign of better news to come in time.

JOCKEY Danny Brereton has begun feeling some sensation in his legs following extensive rehabilitation. After a prolonged period where there was little encouraging news on his condition, the Victorian Jockeys Association yesterday released an update that gives cause for hope. ''He's starting to get first signs of very small movement back in his legs,'' the message read. ''Doctors won't commit to where it may end up but its a tiny positive after nine really tough weeks.'' Two months ago, Brereton sustained head and serious spinal injuries when he crashed heavily from Marquee Player just before the home turn in the McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley.
