Honolulu retired to French National Stud

Honolulu, the impressive winner of last year's Doncaster Cup, has been retired to the French National Stud.
He has joined Khalkevi, Roman Saddle and Network on the stallion roster at Le Lion d'Angers.

A son of Montjeu, Honolulu is out of the Prix Saint-Alary winner Cerulean Sky, a three-parts sister to last year's Irish Oaks heroine Moonstone.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien for Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, he was unraced at two, but at three won two races over 1m3f and 1m4f and finished second to Purple Moon in the Ebor and third behind Lucarno in the St. Leger.

At four he won the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, and was a four-length winner ofthe Doncaster Cup. His last race was the Melbourne Cup in November, in which he helped set a strong pace with his stablemates Alessandro Volta and Septimus before weakening and finishing lame.

The French National Stud has set his fee at €1,200 for 2009.

... E1,200 stud fee sounds about 1,150 too many.

A stud fee of $2,400 isn't very much is it?

Not for a potential Oakleigh plate winner.

Err Oakliegh Plate? Yeah right now I know you're joking. Honolulu's progeny will feature heavily at places like Vichy, Auteuil, Fakenham and Thurles.

Surely he'll sire jumpers?

In fact, I am surprised no one bought him to have a go over hurdles.  Might have been a topliner.

That's right Manikato. Exactly the sort of racing that goes on at Vichy, Auteuil, Fakenham and Thurles.  biggrin

I got Fakenham & Thurles, wasn't sure about Vichy and Auteuil.

No worries Manikato. He's standing in France so I thought those two were mandatory.  biggrin
