From the Sportsman

TRACK CONDITIONS:
ROSEHILL: Friday at 10am, Track Good (3), Penetrometer: 4.44. Rail Out 6m. Track has been given plenty of water and weather is expected to be fine. Track should remain good.

DOOMBEN: Friday at 10am, Track Slow, Rail Out 1m. Track has received 12mm of rain this week after substantial rain in the region last week. Weather overcast and humid today and mostly fine tomorrow 27 degrees.

ASCOT: Friday at 9am, Track Good, Rail Out 3m. Track has had no rain this week but has been given plenty of irrigation. Weather has been fine with 25 degrees expected today and 30 degrees tomorrow. Track will be good. MOONEE VALLEY (tonight): Friday at 11am, Track Dead (4), Penetrometer: 4.51 (taken this morning at 6.30am). Rail Out 7m. Hot weather expected in Melbourne today and track is expected to be upgraded to Good (3) by the first race tonight.

Early scratchings
MOONEE VALLEY
Race 1: (9) Pizzicato
Race 4: (11) Kalashnikov, (12) Freddie Fraar, (13) Higino, (14) Rapid Girl
Race 5: (5) Tis Isat, (12) My Dad's A Pirate
Race 6: (#8) Appian Way
Race 7: (11) Royal Rush, (12) Nufoos, (13) Keeping Score
Race 8: (11) Night Magic

KEMBLA
Race 7: (3) Motsirod, (15) Heatalon

GOLD COAST
Race 1: (10) Cash Au The Box, (14) Electric Lass, (16) Neiva
Race 9: (4) Chief Whip

BEST:
BEST: Sway Me Now (Rosehill R5 No.9) might have been a bit disappointing first-up but she also raced a lot closer than usual. The John O’Shea horses have improved after a run in the post-EI era so there is likely to be improvement in her too. There should be more pace in tomorrow’s race than there was first-up and she gets her big chance.

LAY:
LAY: Moonboat (Caulfield R3 No.5) can’t possibly win tomorrow if she goes as hard as she did first-up on the Kensington track on Boxing Day. If she settles off the pace she’s a chance but she’ll have a couple of friends attempting to find the lead. She’s up against a much stronger field with a bit of depth and I’m happy to watch her go around at $2.80.

Trackwork Specials
RANDWICK - Three Swallows (Rosehill R3 No. 7) - Tuesday, steeple grass, 9m out, going good, 600m (wih Hidden Assets) in 36.2 and flew to the line to break 11 seconds for the final 200m.

ROSEHILL - Matchless (Rosehill R5 No. 1) - Monday, inside grass, 14m out, going good, 600m in 35.98 with a good last 400 in 23.84.

BROADMEADOW - Beyonce's Star (Not entered) Thursday, 800m in 51.2, last 600m in 37.20. So far as tomrorow is concerned, Alan `Joc' Gollogly has been reported positively about Boncoeur who will contest Race 7 at Rosehill tomorrow.

CAULFIELD - Barwon Express (Caulfield R6 No. 2) - Tuesday, steeple grass, going good, 1200m in 1.24, last 600 in 37.

FLEMINGTON - El Duce (R2 No. 1) - Thursday, Viscoride, 1000m in 1.10.11, last 400 in 26.20.

Con Kafataris - early mail
Hybrid (Caulfield R2 No. 2) - Big run when beaten by a smart one last start. Will be further improved by that run, and should go one better.

Three Swallows (Rosehill R3 No. 7) - Impressive beating a moderate lot at Randwick. Up in class but very promising, and should get an ideal run throughout.
E'minor (Morphettville R4 No. 6) - Flew home when narrowly beaten here on debut. Strips fitter and looks a good each-way chance in what is a fairly even contest.

First-up Flyer
Upsized (Tamworth Sunday R3 No. 5) - has won four races in total, two of which came when first-up. The son of Catbird won on debut at Kensington and finished ahead of the rest at the top of his last campaign. Take a look at some of the horses he's raced against in his career - Stratum, Snitzel, Media, Written Tycoon, Rewaaya, The Free Stater and he once finished third to Natural Destiny.

Barrier trial teaser
Referees (Rosehill R7 No. 5) - from the Peter Snowden stable has had two trials to wind him up for a return to racing. The first on December 21 was little more than a pipe-opener. However seven days later at Rosehill he was required to do a little bit more finishing fifth to Spark Of Life over the 900 metres. Referees has plenty of weight but Snowden isn't claiming and will go with Danny Nikolic instead. One other piece of information regarding Referees, he's been gelded since we last saw him.

Weekend Whispers
If he was a horse, you'd say that Jim Cassidy should strip fitter for a few runs back in the saddle and is ready to perform tomorrow. The Pumper replaces a 3kg claimer on SPECTACULAR BIRD at Rosehill in Race 5 and looks like a great opportunity for the 99-times G1 winning hoop to get back into the winenr's circle.

Bred to win
Faith In Maggie (Kembla Grange R1 No. 4) - is by global star sire Red Ransom out of that former smart mare Portview (by Handy Proverb) who placed in a Reginald Allen. Portview's previous foals to race include stakes-performers Barawin and Saddler's Silk , both of who were G1 placed 2YO's. Be assured that this is a ``filly family'', i.e all the best ones are girls like Dashing Eagle, Brief Embrace and South African G3 winner Pacific Charm. Faith In Maggie has trialled very well for her debut and which would have come on one of two prior occasions but for bad barriers. Connections shall have their patience rewarded with first prize tomorrow.

Saturday 19 January
Here is the best for this weekend.

From the Sportsman

TRACK CONDITIONS:
ROSEHILL: Friday at 10am, Track Good (3), Penetrometer: 4.52. Rail Normal. Track had 11.5mm of rain early in the week. Weather is overcast today with the chance of showers.
FLEMINGTON: Friday at 10am, Track Dead (4), Overall Penetrometer: 4.86. Inside: 4.85. Outside: 4.83. Rail Out 9m, Track has been given 53mm of irrigation this week. Weather is mostly fine but cloudy today with showers predicted tomorrow.
MORPHETTVILLE: Friday at 10am, Track Good (3), Rail Out 10m 1200m-WP, Out 6m remainder. Warm day expected today, 33 degrees with the same tomorrow except for the chance of some showers. Good track is expected though.
EAGLE FARM: Friday at 10am, Track Dead, Rail True. Track has received 20mm of rain this week including 2mm overnight. Mostly sunny day expected today so track could improve.
ASCOT: Friday at 9am, Track Good, Rail Out 6m. Track has had no rain this week but has been given plenty of irrigation. Weather has been hot all week in Perth so the track will be good.

Early scratchings
ROSEHILL

Race 4: 5 Danzibaa
Race 7: 7 Future Impact
Race 8: 2 Geigeron

FLEMINGTON

Race 6: 12 Larson

EAGLE FARM

Race 5: 7 Heart Of The Citi
             11 Broms Girl
Race 6: 8 Covet Gold
             14 Northern Game

MORPHETTVILLE

Race 3: 1 Nixie's New Shoes
Race 4: 6 Miss Starnee

GOLD COAST

Race 5: 4 Maredamah
Race 6: 13 Jimmyjim

NEWCASTLE

Race 1: 4 Dalayel (runs at Rosheill R1)

BEST:
Viatorian (Flemington R4 No.3) is a very promising three-year-old and he really caught the eye in winning first-up at the provincials. Don’t worry about the step up to city class, the only time he’s raced in town he ran second to Weekend Hussler. If anything like the newspaper price is available ($13) he’s a massive each-way special but I think it will be at least a third of that price. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t go close.

LAY:
Bedtime Secrets (Rosehill R4 No.1) has been disappointing lately as a short-priced favourite and it’s surprising to see him favourite again. He’s got the outside fare to contend with in a competitive race and he’s very much under the odds at the $2.50 in early markets. Been burnt a couple of times by him and happy to steer away.

Trackwork Specials
RANDWICK - Sebring (Rosehill R1 No. 4) - Tuesday, 600m in 33.8 seconds with impressive trial winner She's Meaner clocking the final 200 in 11 seconds.
ROSEHILL - Isurava (Rosehill R5 No. 1) - Monday, inside grass, 17m out, going dead, 1000m in 1.6.3, final 600 in 37.8, last 200 in 13.2 seconds.
BRAODMEADOW - Our Vegas Dream (Newcastle R3 No. 5) - Tuesday, Proride, 600m in 39 flat.
CAULFIELD - Bel Mer (Flemington R7 N0. 7) - Tuesday, Viscoride, 800m in 52 flat unextended.
FLEMINGTON - Streetcar Desire (Flemington R4 No. 7) - Thursday, Inside grass, 8m out, going good, 1200m in 1.24.45, last 400 in 25.72

Con Kafataris - early mail
Interfere (Rosehill R3 No. 6) - Impressive win over this trip at Randwick last time out. Perfectly drawn and should make it two on end.

Electrostatic (Flemington R3 No. 8) - Former Kiwi trained mare, who looked the part with an easy win in a recent Cranbourne trial. Stakes placed when last in work, so looks too good for this lot.

Go Sandman (Mophettville R1 No. 6) - Set a fast pace and was a good effort to finish second at Murray Bridge last start. Up in class, but should get his own way in front this time.

First-up Flyer
Royal Flag (Sunshine Coast Sunday R1 No. 3) - is a lightly raced 3YO by Cape Cross from a Sir Tristram mare, so the 1400m first-up suits him perfectly. The gelding has had the two trial to bring his fitness levels up to speed and should get nice cover from barrier six. The gelding's only ``first-up'' was his debut and it was a torrid run for the then 2YO. he drew 16 of 16 and ran wide throughout. In the end he did a good job to finish where he did. Looks like the trainer has him ready for a bold return - Katsidis to ride.
[
Barrier trial teaser
Isurava (Rosehill R5 No. 1) - has clearly returned a bigger and better filly after her stunning win in Brisbane during the carnival in a Listed race. She was jogging throughout in a trial at Rosehill on December 28 before quickening up a fraction to put two lengths between herself and the others. It was as good a trial as you would see. So far as her chances on the wet are concerned, she's by General Nediym (tick) from a Whiskey Road sister to champion Tie The Knot (double tick).

Weekend Whispers
The Sunshine Coast Cup is run on Sunday and we're leaning towards the Bruce McLachlan trained Tropical Express to keep his excellent first-up record intact. The Jason Taylor mount also boasts oustanding figures at the track and the distance and represents good value.

Bred to win
Dalayel (Rosehill R1 No. 6) - is by that very good NZ sire Stravinsky out of a Woodman half sister to Camarena (dam of Camarilla) and Untouchable. She is from he family of canny Lad, Canny Lass and Moonboat among others. If every there was a horse bred to handle wet tracks - this is it. Sydney is expected to be deluged today and over the weekend which could have a marked effect on Dalayel's hopes of upsetting the hot-pot and boom colt, Sebring in the first. If they run up to pedigrees, Dalayel swims, Sebring sinks. Yu wouldn't day he's sire, More Than Ready is a proven sire of mudlarks and as for his dam-sire (Flying Spur) and grand-dam sire (Luskin Star), they positively hate the wet. There's the theory, let's hope it works in practise.

Race 9: 3 Mistress Of Dreams               Race 7: Melrose Prince
             11 Buddha Babe

BEST:
BEST: Douro Valley (Flemington R5 No. 1) will find this much easier than the Australian Cup last run. He finished second to Master O'Reilly in the Caulfield Cup in the spring and at his last run over this course and distance beat Maldivian in the Naturalism Stakes. Each way all day at the $5.00 on offer.
LAY:
Sliding Cube LAY: (Randwick R4 No. 2) looks to me like she's going to end up being a pretty one-dimensional type of filly/mare. She'll lead and win her fair share, but I don't think she'll be doing it over 1400m. She looked tired at the end of 1200m last time whereas there are others in this field I expect to be improved for their last run. Happy to fill the bag up at around the $3.50.

Trackwork Specials
RANDWICK - Acey Ducey (Randwick R1 No. 1) - Tuesday, Kensington track, 9m out, going good, 1000m in 1:05, last 600m in 36.1secs. He was a run short last time and will strip fitter here.
ROSEHILL - Danleigh (Randwick R8 No. 9) - Tuesday, Course proper, 18m out, going good, 800m in 55.73. Looked in great order and will prove very hard to beat on Saturday according to John Moc.
BROADMEADOW - Fritz's Princess (Randwick R6 No. 12) - No. 2 grass, 6m out, going good, 800m in 50.9, last 600m in 36.85. Nicely weighted to cause an upset in the Galaxy.
CAULFIELD - Stagerush (Caulfield R1 No. 9) - Tuesday, steeplegrass, going good, 800m in 54 neat, home the 600m in 38. Looks vert fit and keen, says George Lucas.
FLEMINGTON - Goldfield Ashes (Caulfield R6 No. 13) - Tuesday, dirt, going good, 800m in 54.26, last 600m in 25.81. Working impressively under the care of Brian Mayfield-Smith and will have the services of Craig Newitt for his first-up assignment.

Con Kafataris - early mail
Hot Danish (Randwick R9 No. 1) - Impressive win at first-up at Rosehill. Class mare, and looks too good for this lot.
Vigor (Caulfield R3 No. 4) - Looked good winning at Moonee Valley last time. Up in class, but very promising and can make it two straight.
Jeuneanje (Oakbank R8 No. 4) - No luck when placed at Cheltenham last start. Gets the run of the race here, so expect her to atone.

First-up Flyer
Rubinda (Randwick R2 No. 10) - returns to racing with a solid barrier trial under his belt when a close second to talented stablemate Allaboutus at Hawkesbury on March 10. Although this son of Rubiton is yet to win first-up, he has not missed a place in the three times he has resumed. The gelding does his best when they get along up front which is precisely the circumstances he will encounter this weekend. Hails from the astute Greg Hickman barn and will want for nothing in the jockey department with Peter Robl to steer.
[
Barrier trial teaser
Rim Of Fire (Newcastle R4 No. 3) - is destined for the big time. That being the case, he'l be streets ahead of his rivals in this, especially after his latest barrier trial win where he accounted for his highly-rated stable partner Lorne Dancer. Blackbook this one, he'll pay to follow

Weekend Whispers
It's a big day on the Gold Coast on Monday for the running of the Magic Millions. If you can get there for the first on the 10-race card have a little on Mr Chairman (R1 No. 18). He placed a couple of times in Victoria before going to the paddock and returns here after 49 weeks. Led all the way in a Rosehill trial on March 8 then given an easy time trialling on March 18. Upwards of 20/1 and if he gets into the field he's worth a punt.

Bred to win
Freedom March (Randwick R3 No. 10) - has already been specked in the Golden Slipper markets firming from 100's into 33's in some quarters. The filly was purchased by Woodlands at the 2007 Easter Yearling Sale for $475,000. She is the first foal of a Zabeel threequarter-sister to Activation and a half-sister to NZ's Champion Sprinter/Miler Coogee Walk. The cerise has had plenty of success with this family including Crawl, Marching and Old Man. Crown Lodge has won five Kindergarten Stakes including the last two. It's significant that two of their five winners went on to claim the Golden Slipper, Guineas in 1997 and Forensics (by Flying Spur) last year.

Saturday 12 April
Here is the best for this weekend.

From the Sportsman

TRACK CONDITIONS:
ROSEHILL: Friday at 11am, Track Slow (6). Penetrometer: 5.48. Rail True. Track had 22m of rain earlier this week. Weather is expected to be fine today and tomorrow. Chance of an upgrade to Dead.
MOONEE VALLEY: Friday at 11am, Track Good (3). Rail True. Rain expected in Melbourne today and tomorrow. Track will depend on how much rain falls. Could get a downgrade to dead.
DOOMBEN: Friday at 11am, Track Good, Rail Out 6.5m. Mostly fine weather expected today and tomorrow so track should remain Good.
MORPHETTVILLE: Friday at 11am, Track Good (3), Rail Out 3m 1200m-400m. Track has had 1.4mm of rain since 7.30am this morning with up to 5mm predicted for today. If track gets predicted 5mm it may go slightly into the dead range.
ASCOT: Friday at 9am, Track Good, Rail Out 3m. Track had 6mm of rain earlier in the week. Weather fine so track should remain Good.

BEST: Guillotine (Rosehill R7 No. 10) caught the eye in the Randwick Guineas when only a couple of lengths behind boom horse Weekend Hussler. He came from a mile back on the turn and is crying out for this distance tomorrow. Great value at the $6.00.

LAY: She's Meaner (Rosehill R4 No. 1) has drawn off the track tomorrow in the Magic Night Stakes and will do it tough. She finished second in the Magic Millions but I'm not convinced that formline will stack up down here with the Golden Slipper only a week away. Currently $4.00 and looks a comfortable lay at those odds.

Kosi Bay (Rosehill R3. No 4) - Got a long way back but found the line okay at Randwick. Extra trip suits, and I think she's ready to show something.
Surfside Christmas (Moonee Valley R4. No 1) - Just didnt handle the soft track when a distant third to Reggie last start. Back on top of the ground here, stay with her.
Moment In Time (Morpettville R4. No 2) - Good effort when narrowly beaten by Zarita in the Schweppes Oaks. Extra trip should be in her favour, looks winner.
[
First-up Flyer
Catseye Beach (Rosehill R6 No. 13) - hasn't raced in nearly a year but has looked like her old self in two recent barrier trials, the latest when closing fast for a length second to top-liner, Mentality. Catseye Beach has raced twice first-up for contrasting runs. She ran last on debut in the Listed Keith Mackay - something which can be forgiven. The only time she resumed was a different story as she bolted in by 5L in a 900m Newcastle Mdn (slow). Expect a bold showing at big odds tomorrow in an open mares race.
[
Barrier trial teaser
Misty D'Bird (Kembla R7 No. 10) - was very convincing winning a 1050m trial at Randwick on March 25. She also ran well in her previous hit-out at HQ when fourth to Red Oog and Catseye Beach. Having been previously trained at Kembla, she is very familiar with the track, indeed, her only win to date was in a 1200m Mdn there. Another time, she finished 3.3L behind Hot Danish - form that reads very well for this Rst. 0 - 65.
[
Weekend Whispers
(Morphettville Sharkbite R7 No. 11) has a great first-up record and has been his old self since returning to the Rodney Douglas stable. One would expect he'll get back from the gate but will stay out of trouble and this field will definitely get along. He also trialled very well at the end of March. He'll be very strong at the finish and can complete a superb weekend for Douglas who also has the winner of this afternoon's Albury Cup with Moreton Bay.

Bred to win
Duporth (Rosehill R2 No. 11) - is a half-brother to the G1 winning 2yo Excites, now at stud at Vinery. This fellow is by Red Ransom out of Staging and has trialled extremely well on two occasions - the most recent of which was at Randwick on Tuesday. He's a beautiful looking horse with a good horse's action and provided he can overcome the barrier, he is a chance to secure an 11th hour bid for the Golden Slipper next weekend.

Saturday 22 November
Here is the best for this weekend.

From the Sportsman

TRACK CONDITIONS:
RANDWICK:
SANDOWN-LAKESIDE: Dead 5 Downgraded at 7.45am to a SLOW 6
CHELTENHAM: Dead 4
GOLD COAST: Heavy 9

BEST: Swissac (Randwick R7 No.5): First-up last prep she beat Stacked by two lengths and the third horse by seven. At her last run before a spell she finished third in the Millie Fox and she'll get a soft run from the inside draw. Currently $8.00 in early markets which is a mile over the odds.

LAY: Occurrence (Sandown R8 No.1): on her best form would beat these but she's been racing well below that level for a long time. Disappointed first-up, has to give plenty of weight away and not keen at the current quote.

Trackwork Specials
RANDWICKPower Personified (Rosehill R1 No. 3) – Monday, Dirt, 600m in 33.50 with a final 200m in 11 seconds. Clocker Craig Tompson says this two-year-old has shown the most ability at Randwick so far this season.
ROSEHILLYouthful Jack (Rosehill R2 No. 1) - Monday, 800m in 50.23 with a final 200m in 12.55, 15m out on the inside grass. John Moc, our man at Rosehill, says this high class three-year-old can cause an upset tomorrow.
BROADMEADOWVisa Lisa (Rosehill R7 No. 9) - Thursday, proride, 1000m in 1:12 with last 400m in 42.70. This Kris Lees-trained mare is a last start winner and has been working well in the past week.
CAULFIELDPit Lane (Sandown R7 No. 4) - Tuesday, 1000m in 1:06 with a last 400m in 23.78, on the steeplegrass. This four-year-old has had four runs back and raced well on each occasion and George Lucas expects him to go close tomorrow.
FLEMINGTONMission Critical (Sandown R6 No. 1) – Thursday, 1600m in 1:53.86, last 400m in 25.44. Clocker Warren Huntly says this Mike Moroney-trained galloper has benefited from his last run and should give a sight.

Con Kafataris - early mail
Sensational Toy (Sandown R4 No. 5) - Handy effort when a close fourth in much stronger company last week. Ideally drawn, and looks hard to beat here.
Causeyacan (Randwick R8 No. 7) - Promising type who looked good winning first-up. Strips fitter, and there's no reason why he won't win again.
Miss Razzle Dazzle (Cheltenham R2 No. 4) - Honest mare who has been close up at her last few outings. Gets an ideal run here, and can break through for an overdue win.

First-up Flyer
Grey Monarch (Ascot R9, No. 12) has bolted in at his last two appearances first-up, once over 1200m and the other over 1400m and was unlucky behind G1 performer Megatic at his only other first-up attempt. Drawn well tomorrow and should be hitting the line hard in what looks a fast run race on paper.

Barrier trial teaser
Synonym (Randwick R8, No. 3) has prepared for his first run since the Caloundra Cup in June with two solid trial performances, the latest an impressive win over 900m at Rosehill on November 11. He hasn’t won fresh but usually runs well and is suited at 1400m first-up. Should hit the line strongly.

Bred to win
You’re Beautiful (Cranbourne Sunday R1, No. 9) is by outstanding sprinter Fastnet Rock, a two time Group One winner, from the Canny Lad mare Canny Princess (who herself is out of a Danehill mare) who won two city races and was stakes placed in a 14 start career for Gai Waterhouse. This filly, trained by Lee Freedman, cost $475,000.

Allan Scott  4 - Mick Dermody Mem 2 - Letmeentertainyou (Very Nice Trial, 5/1 +)
Allan Scott  7 - Dermody Stakes  4 - Augusta Proud (Has a little class on these, everything equal it wins 3/1+)
Moonee Valle 5 - Travis Harrison          4 - Partiva (only natural Leader & Is an honest, gives all type, good sight, 4/1+)
Randwick         7 - GOLD EDITION HAN 6 - Cloudy Morning (First Look stays in this race to keep the odds decent, 4/1+)
Doomben         2 - TRILBY MISSO QTI 1 - Surf's Up (Major dangers seem to be drawn out wide, Hoop a plus 3/1+)
Toowoomba  5 - PSP VIDEO QTIS T 1 - Secrets (Decent first up run after very good trial, looks to good for these, 2/1+)

Have a little mail for the 2nd at Morph, Luce del Mare looks very hard to beat but the Weir first starter Keltara is supposed to be very good & is definitely worth a few bob if at double figure odds, & In the 5th Starlite looks hard to beat, especially with With Apologies winning well last start but Lucky Luna trailed super recently & again if at decent odds is worth abit of loose change.
