I'll go with Seal. I just can't get too excited about these horses.

I wasn't that excited about the field coming in but it made for a great race.

Although if the winner was trained by Joe Bloggs I feel would be slamming the quality of the field.

Its interesting, if we are going to dismiss the 3yo classic performers as Cup chances and we constantly rubbish the older stayers, who is left ?

Good question. Not a lot?

Horses that are currently 4yos anod above. Horses that change stables...Europeans that come to Aust? NZ's that change to Aust trainers. NZ's that we don't know about yet?

'THE astute David Payne, at first, was sceptical about the quality of Saturday's AJC Australian Derby following the effort of his three-year-old Naval Escort. THE astute David Payne, at first, was sceptical about the quality of Saturday's AJC Australian Derby following the effort of his three-year-old Naval Escort. "He's still a maiden," Payne said following the 2.5-length sixth of Naval Escort, which made up considerable ground despite problems in the straight. Also, with a better run Predatory Pricer, the minor placegetter, would have scored. Even Kerrin McEvoy, rider of Sousa, admitted that under different circumstances his mount would have finished closer than a half-length fourth. Rock Kingdom lost his chance missing the jump by two lengths. Undoubtedly Jim Cassidy was vital on Roman Emperor. Coming from a wide barrier he took hold of the race like few jockeys in the modern era can, giving the impression if the derby was run again the result would be different. On the second replay, however, Payne started to warm to Naval Escort, buoyed by the opinion of his jockey Tim Clark: "He'll stay all day." Payne agreed with the suggestion that Naval Escort could be a Melbourne Cup prospect. After all, his pedigree carries the newly acquired magic word when it comes to distance horses - Montjeu.

Filante would have beat this lot by panels wouldn't he? I don't think he finished in the top 3 of the modern classic.

The horse I feel sorry for is Roisyn?  Finished 5th in both the Guineas and Derby, most years he would have won the double.

working with Harris Tweed and Roman Emperor.
speced HT for a nice win the other day and the quick backup might be good here.
RE was a very nice run last start, working into form at the right time and the Bart factor.

bad luck mate it could have been a very good day for you.

Had Roman Emperor pegged as a wet tracker.

Thought Pre Eminence ran well but Newitt went a bit early.Maybe had no choice.

He took off at about the 700m after scrubbing it out of the barriers to take a forward position and was a sitting shot in the end.
