From President Bob Frappell, today.

QUEENSLAND RACING GOVERNANCE

In response to the current public debate between LNP spokesperson Mr. Mike Horan and Chairman of Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) Mr. Bob Bentley, the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Queensland Association (TBQA) wish to make the following statement.

The TBQA have enjoyed a long and productive relationship with Mr. Bentley in his role as Chair of QRL and whilst disagreeing with him at various times have found him to be supportive of the breeding industry as an integral part of the racing industry in this state.

At the same time we have found the LNP spokesman Mr. Horan approachable and knowledgeable in the discharge of his responsibilities on behalf of the opposition.

We regret, in the run up to the election, the policy differences between Mr. Bentley and Mr. Horan having been made public in this way.

We believe that on their records both have a great deal to offer the Queensland breeding and racing industry.

Mr. Bentley has been instrumental in introducing a governance structure to QRL for the Queensland thoroughbred industry to the benefit of all stakeholders.

He has insured that breeders have been consulted and informed at all times in matters affecting the industry.

In the face of opposition from vested interests, Mr. Bentley has greatly reformed the administration of racing in Queensland so that it is transparent and accountable.

It is vital that the Governance of the Queensland racing industry does not revert to the more inward looking and insular system run by vested interests.

That would be a retrograde step and would be opposed by breeders at all costs. The future of the racing industry depends on stability.

The current Governance structure is well placed to guide us through the uncertain economic times and deliver the best results for all stakeholders.

The TBQA call on QRL and the LNP to meet to settle their differences in the interests of the Queensland thoroughbred industry.

Ted

My thoughts are well known.  I believe racing should be in the hands of those who participate in it - breeders, owners, trainers, jockeys, punters, race clubs and Government.

There's no industry like it.  Other models are irrelevant.

"punters" includes bookies.

Wouldn't be difficult to identify someone who knows what punters want from racing.
