Vastly varying forecasts for overnight rainfall

IF Cheltenham's private weather forecaster John Kettley is correct, Cheltenham 2009 should open with ground no worse than soft with good to soft places. If the Met Office is proved accurate, underfoot conditions could become heavy.

As has often been the case in recent days, Kettley, who focuses solely on the racecourse's "microclimate", and the Met Office, which offers a more general assessment, on Monday provided different predictions for Tuesday morning's much-heralded bout of rain.

Kettley anticipated no more than 6mm of rain, but the Met Office believed that 15mm to 20mm was likely.

The raging winds that have been drying the course all day long had died down slightly by 9pm but not a drop of the forecast rain had arrived, although it had been overcast since 5pm.

Claisse, who reported good to soft conditions on the two main courses (GoingStick 6.cool with good to soft, soft in places going (GoingStick 5.6) on the cross-country track, said at 4.45pm: "We've had a dry day and the forecast remains much as it has been. John Kettley is confident that we should expect only 5mm to 6mm of rain between 2am and 6am. If we getthat, I'm sure it will be good to soft, soft in places, if not soft, good to soft in places. If the Met Office is correct, we would have soft or heavy ground."

Claisse added: "I think they will get through the ground. It hasnot been raced on since March and the grass cover is good, albeit the grass growth is not as good as it was in 2008 or 2007."

Providing the Met Office view, a spokesman said on Monday afternoon: "There will be light rain from dusk today with heavier rain coming from midnight and lasting through to the small hours. In total, that could bring up to 15mm to 20mm of rain.

"It will become drier and brighter through Tuesday afternoon, but there will be a lot of cloud with the chance of light and patchy rain.

"Tuesday night will be dry, but clouds coming in off the Atlantic will bring outbreaks of light rain on Wednesday. Thursday is set to be a largely cloudy day with spells of drizzle and light rain. Friday should be the best day of the meeting with mainly dry conditions, light winds and some brightness."

Champion Hurdle-winning rider Philip Carberry described the racing surface as "good to soft but edging towards soft" after walking the track.

Trainer Paul Nolan called the track "yielding" and jockey Robbie Power used the word "dead".

Hehehe - Not much else on the card today but I've got a little result through the delightfully named Chomba Womba in the last. Back tomorrow for a lot, lot more. No Nicholls winner so far. How many days will it take this year?

Hillbilly, I think you went off a bit early there saying vinny had set paddy power up for the week. I heard him on the radio on the way home, and he took a pasting with the 4 irish winners today!

I know its a bit late, but maybe one for next year - always put the ££ down on good to soft going. It could be heavier than something really heavy, or drier than a dead dingoes donger and they would still put up good to soft.......

Laying Master Minded tomorrow - brilliant on his day, but can throw in the occasional bad one - will lay the £1.35 or so for a bit.
Also a bit on Diamond Harry at £5.50 or so

As great as the racing is, how spectacular is the cross country course?  Great stuff.

Never believe a bookie when he bleeds. Paddy had CV as his lay of the week and money back to other punters who bet on the race if Vinny won. Yes the Irish had a good day ( especially the last race ) but any bookie losing yesterday should get a life ban.

Great spectacle in the first and Sam Waley Cohen again bobs up at the Festival. Young Sam is a regular and might be in the saddle a little more as he works in Switzerland for one of those belly up stockmarket banking failures. One of the many quality amateurs here in the UK. Sam picked Tricky Trickster up a number of times after dodgy landings. Well backed too as has been the case with every winner I've seen Sam ride at the Festival. He has a lot of unemployed banking/market buddies who need a quick pound.  lol   lol   lol   lol

The next is a sensational contest with three very likely types heading the market and a number of others close on their heels. Many local touts expect a number of these horses to be top class performers for years to come. It's a very tough one to call but I'm going to stick with the Alan King/McCoy combo and their tough improving stayer.

Another good winner for the Irish there with McCoy getting caught up on the inside on the second horse. The bookies will be back in the pain zone now. If Cooldine wins the next some will be heading home.  lol

A bit of a write off for me today, just got out of a meeting i have been in since 9am, doesn't matter really as Master Minded is too short but nothing will beat him, might have a dabble in the 400 race, The Polomoche - but every man and his dog is tipping him this morning!

How many flights do they have to get over in a quarter horse race?
