Streets to stay away from Golden Slipper after colic attack

Brad Waters
Monday, 9 March 2009

Brisbane two-year-old Streets Away’s Golden Slipper campaign is over after a colic attack in Sydney last week almost claimed his life.

Streets Away was a $12 chance for the Golden Slipper on the strength of two classy wins in Queensland before disaster struck on his first trip away from home.

"He went for a swim and within minutes was in cruel pain. Fortunately he was over to the Randwick vet clinic within a few minutes," trainer Alan Bailey told the Courier-Mail.

"He lost so much sweat he had to be given 80 litres of fluid to keep him going.

"With the heavy drugs he needed there is no way he would be right to race in the next couple of weeks.”

Bailey said that he will keep Streets Away in Sydney to recover for the next few weeks before taking the son of Street Cry back to Brisbane to prepare for the winter carnival up there, targeting races like the QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Not going well. I have no doubt it had the ability to at least be competitive in those races it contested during the carnival.

I see it was a set weight class 6. How are the weights allotted in such races ?

He was C4 before the race.  C6s carried 58.5kg, C5s 57.0, C4s 55.5.  F&M allowed 2kg.
