Vasil to take team to Queensland

Tony Vasil is looking to take a team of seven or eight horses to Queensland for the winter carnival including Sunday's Sandown winner Maxisun.

The four-year-old took his record to five wins from eight starts for Vasil when he came from last to win the City Of Greater Dandenong Cup (1000m) on the Hillside track.

The Choisir entire was originally trained in NSW by Greg Hickman and ran third to Murtajill in the 2006 Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick.

"He had a bone cyst in a hock and had an operation," Vasil said.

"He's quite a talented horse and I reckon he'll go terrific right-handed.

"He'll run 1400 metres for sure once he has a few runs under his belt and comes back under you and settles down.

"You just have to ride him quiet, that's the key to him."

Multiple Group winner Bird Of Fire, and Burgeis, Saturday's Proud Miss Stakes winner at Morphettville, will also head north as well as some younger members of the Vasil team who may or may not actually race there.

"I want to do a Geoff Murphy or a Kenny Newman," said Vasil referring to Victorian trainers who used to take their horses to Queensland for the winter and bring them back to Melbourne for the spring carnival with good results.

Before Bird Of Fire heads north, the last-start Group Two Queen Of The North Stakes winner at Morphettville will return to Adelaide for Saturday's Group Three $170,000 Gerard Corporation Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville.

Vasil claimed a double at Sandown when Tale Of The Cat three-year-old True Tales ($2.15 fav) took out the Greater Dandenong Chamber Of Commerce Hcp (1300m) to make it five wins from eight starts.

Apprentice Brenton Avdulla made it a double in the last two races, having earlier scored on the Luke Oliver-trained Scenic Scene ($7) in the Hilton Manufacturing Cup (1700m).

And they keep arriving.

Largo Lad to lead Hayes's Qld carnival team

Trainer David Hayes is planning a fresh assault on the Stradbroke Handicap with lightweight chance Largo Lad.

“Largo Lad has thrived in Queensland and he’ll go straight into the Stradbroke,” Hayes said.

“We were thrilled with his run in the Doncaster and you’d think that will be a good formline for the Stradbroke.

“He’s been weighted at 52.5kg which is a nice, light weight for such a strong horse.”

Largo Lad is a $21 chance in latest Stradbroke betting.

Hayes has a strong team in Brisbane for the winter carnival and he is enthusiastic about his chances of feature race success.

VRC St Leger winner Berlioz has also arrived safely in Brisbane and will not have another run before Queensland Derby.

“He galloped extremely well in the Brisbane direction at Flemington before heading to Queensland and has settled into the Brisbane stables nicely,” Hayes said.

“He (Berlioz) had a trip to Perth before winning the St Leger and I don’t think he needs to race before the Derby.”
Group I features The Stradbroke Handicap, Queensland Derby and T J Smith Stakes will be run at Eagle Farm on June 6 along with the Group II Brisbane Cup.
