Bart Sinclair reports

"Former Gold Coast Turf Club board member Peter Lawlor will be the Minister for Racing in the new Bligh Government ministry. He also has responsibility for Tourism and Fair Trading."

This would have to be good news even for those who pinned their hopes on a change of government.

This man,who I don't know personally, has race club experience so it's logical to expect he'll put his best foot forward for all three codes to   give racing industry a lot more attention than its had from his predecessors. Thumb Up

Wonder what his views are on the Palm Meadows pipe dream that may be a slight query that should soon be evident  . rolleyes

No doubt P.Cameron and The Gold Coast Bulletin will keep up the pressure. rolleyes

Reckon he was a member of the Racing Appeals (RAT) with Leo Williams and Jim Killen, before he became the member for Southport.

And might have been on the committee of the Gold Coast Turf Club in the past to.

And a good bloke too!

Has been known to have a bet and a beer!

Will be fearless in his passion for Queensland Racing, so any decisions he makes will be well thought through, even if we may not agree.

Even Ted E Turner should feel somewhat reassured that a true "racelover" is now in charge.

Great news for racing.

A racing minister from the Gold Coast. Maybe all those old tories who pine for the good old days could buy him a fat suit and then he would be nearly perfect.

You would think that his ministerial title should have Racing in it. Thumb Up

Do they think it's so inconsequential that it doesn't deserve inclusion. rolleyes

Pretty poor IMO Thumb Down

With the opening of State Parliament after the recent election  I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first Hansard  to see what our  newly promoted ministers had to say for themselves.

Our new Racing Minister Hon.P J Lawlor (Southport-ALP )(Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading) note no mention of Racing, had his moment of glory holding centre stage for 3 minutes speaking  on the Tourism industry and the best job in the world promotion.

Not a word about racing. chin

Not a good sign when Racing doesn't get included in his title . Thumbs Down

Hope he hasn't forgotten already. embarrassed embarrassed

The only contribution I found on racing was from opposition MP Vaughan Johnson Gregory LNP about the plight of country racing .

In closing he said  "I call on whoever may be responsible in the government to show some leadership and bring about a concept where we can once again enjoy racing as we used to in our country towns .We once took racing for granted but not anymore."

Maybe he thinks the new racing minister is invisible stop

Thought this thread could be resurrected given the expectations of the newly elected Labour Govt and the sad outcomes of racing administration so far since..to wit, one Queensland Racing Limited.

Will the Minister ever act?

We need another Hinze to run racing.. sure all will jump out and say he set racing back but you can't knock his enthusiasm for racing or the fact he would mix with us commoners.  I shared a burger (well stood at the same spot) with Russ at the Gold Coast trots and had an enjoyable talk with him.  I also offered to give him a tissue to wipe off the hamburger stain off his tee shirt but he declined. biggrin

A great man.

When it comes to State Governments, those of us from south of the border can hardly talk, can we?
