Boss and Purton to Hong Kong

1 Jun 2007
By Rob Burnet  www.thoroughbrednews.co.nz

Sydney will lose two senior jockeys with the Hong Kong Jockey Club granting Glen Boss and Zac Purton licences to ride in Hong Kong from July 3rd until January 28th, 2008.

In a decision announced on Friday the Hong Kong Jockey Club confirmed full seasons licences for Shane Dye, Danny Nikolic and Brett Prebble. All three jockeys are presently riding in Hong Kong.

Boss,38, as previously ridden in Hong Kong at various times between 1996 and 2000 as well as representing Australia in the 2005 International Jockeys Championship in which he finished runner-up after winning a leg of the Championship on Harry Harry. He has ridden 46 winners in Hong Kong.

Purton, 24, was a highly successful apprentice who won the Brisbane senior jockey's premiership in 2003 as an Apprentice Jockey. In July 2005 he transferred to Sydney and in his first season of riding there finished 2nd on the Jockeys Premiership with 72 winners.

The Club also licenced South African jockey Kevin Shea, 43, for the same period. Shea was the stable jockey for now Randwick based David Payne, when he was training in South Africa, a position he held until 2000. Since that time Shea has been largely attached to prominent trainer Mike de Kock's stable.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club licensing committee decisions issued on Friday:

LICENSING COMMITTEE DECISIONS

1 June 2007

The following is a summary of decisions that were made by the Licensing Committee at their meeting held earlier today:-

1.        The Committee called Freelance Jockey Alex Yu Kin Shing to show cause why his application for a Freelance Jockey's Licence for the 2007/2008 racing season ought to be granted.  Consideration was given to verbal and written submissions tendered by Jockey Yu together with his race riding performance and disciplinary records.  The Committee deliberated on this matter and having taken full account of all the evidence and submissions before them, decided that Alex Yu had failed to show cause why his application for a Freelance Jockey's Licence for the 2007/2008 racing season ought to be granted.  Accordingly, his application for a Freelance Jockey's Licence for the 2007/2008 racing season was refused.  He was advised of his right of appeal to the Stewards of the Jockey Club against this decision of the Licensing Committee.
