I'm open to offers - Williams
Brad Waters (racenet)
Sunday, 12 April 2009

Craig Williams, fresh from a winning treble at Randwick, is desperate to link full-time with a major stable.

Williams, whose Easter Saturday haul included the Group I Galaxy on the David Hayes-trained Nicconi, said he would be open to offers to again become a retained jockey.

“I would love to be a full-time stable jockey for a trainer,” he revealed.

“I love test driving all the horses. “I feel like I achieve a lot more and enjoy that a lot more than just jumping on and riding winners.

“I enjoy the ride of getting the horses to the races and winning much more.”

Williams joined Hayes as a full-time stable jockey when he returned from Hong Kong before the trainer suggested the rider broaden his horizons and chase more outside rides.

“David and I had a meeting and discussed where we are at,” Williams said.

“David still supports me and I’ve ridden three Group I winners for David in the autumn so it’s been great.

“It was one of those things. We weren’t making mistakes but the results weren’t coming but David still supports me 100 percent.”

Williams believes trainers who employ stable jockeys are getting superior results to those who book freelance riders.

“If you have a look at the most successful stables around, they employ stable jockeys,” he said.

“They know how the trainer likes to train, how the trainer likes their horses ridden and the jockey knows where the horse is in their preparation so they gain an advantage.

“The Snowden stable is having success and Lee Freedman is leading the premiership and he employs a stable jockey. It just proves that it is very effective having a stable jockey in my view.

“But it’s not the Australian way. I don’t know why but it’s the Australian training culture. Maybe it will change.”

Williams chases international Group I double
Brad Waters
Thursday, April 23, 2009

Leading Melbourne jockey Craig Williams returns from suspension at Randwick on Saturday in time to rekindle a long-time relationship.

Williams will ride Ista Kareem for Caulfield trainer Colin Little in the Sydney Cup to resume a partnership which began more than 15 years ago.

“I was thrilled to pick up the ride on Ista Kareem for Colin,” Williams said. “I rode for him quite a bit before I went overseas and he’s a terrific trainer, particularly of stayers.
“I remember riding El Segundo’s mum, Palos Verdes, for Colin quite a few years ago and she was a wonderful stayer and Colin always had her spot-on. Ista Kareem should be no different.”

Saturday’s Randwick meeting will only be the start of a big weekend for Williams because the popular jockey will head to Hong Kong to ride Niconero in the QEII Cup at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Niconero will take on local star Viva Pataca and last year’s winner Archipenko but Williams gives the David Hayes-trained warhorse a good chance in a high quality field.

“It’s never easy when you travel over to Viva Pataca’s backyard to race him and there are some other high quality horses in it as well this year,” he said.

“The reports coming out of Hong Kong are Niconero is doing wonderfully well, David (Hayes) has even had to step up his work because he’s heavier than he was in Dubai.

“He’s doing really well over there and I can’t wait to get back into it this weekend.”

Which Victorian track would be abbreviated to NHIL?
Is there another C Williams in the Jockey ranks in Victoria?

Why I ask, I noticed in the hurdle in the 1st, No4 - Kimberley Dane was ridden at its previous start on the flat by C Williams at NHIL and it was a Saturday meeting.
Surely it wasn't Craig?

Sorry the 6th - No8 What An Honour
