Couldn't find a thread containing general discussion on health matters.

If there is, Management feel free to trash this one.

Worrying news from WHO about the new strain of swine flu in US and Mexico.

Time for those in Oz who fit the criteria to get their annual fluvax.  Well worth it. Thumb Up

Well the swine flu incident is gradually becoming a pandemic.  Australia won't be spared.

How sad it is to read (and hear) in the media that the public is being advised to wear "surgical masks".

Will someone please tell these people that surgical masks are NOT designed to protect the wearer.  Rather, the surgeon wears such a mask to protect the patient undergoing surgery.

The protection afforded by a surgical mask - of the type available in pharmacies, etc - would be the equivalent to that provided by wearing a HAT.  In other words, NIL.

For a "mask" to be effective it needs to serve as a microbiological filter of inspired air.  Surgical masks cannot do this.

The only masks that offer a level of protection to the wearer are "respirators" - which are more costly, uncomfortable, must be personally fitted, etc, etc.  Ya won't buy these at the corner store.

So please don't waste your punting money on surgical masks. rant

(In any case the majority of 'flu transmission occurs via fomites, and hand to mouth, rather than aerosol.)

PS I intended to add that the people who should be wearing the surgical masks are those that HAVE 'flu - not those that do NOT.

No, mate.  The mix of strains used in this year's vaccine is based on most recent epidemiological info from Asia, Europe, US and Oz.  Swine flu was unheard of at the time the vaccine make-up was decided upon.

There's a lead-time of several months in preparing specific vaccines.  So there should/could be a "swine flu vaccine" available later this year - when we're all dead, or recovered, or immune.

But....still have ya fluvax. Thumb Up

People do not generally appreciate what a killer 'flu can be - even tough punters are susceptible.

Here's the mix for 2009.

This year (2009) the viruses are A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1) - like strain, A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2) - like strain and B/Florida/4/2006 - like strain.

Note Brisbane features - as we'd expect.
