Couldn't find a thread containing general discussion on health matters.

If there is, Management feel free to trash this one.

Great news that India has gone a full year without a new case of polio.

Anyone still questioning the benefits of vaccination?

At the recent Woodford Folk Festival there were ratbags campaigning against vaccination.  These are the imbeciles who have memories spans of 1 hr, and give no importance to history.  They're quick to point to the case of a kid who got a fever after a flu shot, but conveniently overlook the millions of lives that have been saved in the past century through vaccination programs.  And that's not to mention the enormous change in life quality for billions, and economic progress that has flowed from a generally healthier population.   Thumb Up

Amazing no new cases. thumbsup

I don't have those stats, DJH, but you can be sure it was a lot less than would have died had it not been for the economic progress brought about by the scientists who developed vaccines, and public health people who administered them.

Not disagreeing, but according to "official" figures, over 35000 children die every DAY from starvation!!!

Going through a charity, it costs about $1 a day to feed someone, much less in reality.

Next time anyone reading this spends $150+ on a bottle of champagne, maybe you could keep someone alive for a few months and buy a cheaper bottle instead of giving the money grubbers a bit more?
Who knows, it might be the person that ends up finding the answer to our energy crisis?
OR
has the cure to the cancer that your loved one suffers that your small donation may save?

Great news about polio.  Thumb Up
You will always get people disagreeing about vaccinations as they see the practice an assault on their beliefs. Also there are some people who are suspicious about vaccinations in general. It comes from a fear that they are currently healthy & are worried they will be damaged by them.

Personally, I'm all for vaccination (as from a research view you can see the overall population is better off) but I can why some are fearful. Each to their own I guess. Some parents don't want their kids vaccinated these days either, not sure of the % but the topic comes up every year.

Zoro it is not so simple as your "each to his own" comment implies.

We're not talking about our tetanus shots, or yellow fever vaccinations when we go to Central America - we're talking about epidemic childhood diseases such as diphtheria, whooping cough, etc.  These diseases are KILLERS.  We might have forgotten this, thanks to Australia generally doing an exemplary job with public health programs.

Sure, the uniformed will say "You can get your kid vaccinated, but let me make up my own mind."  The flaw in that thinking is that for toddlers, they can't be vaccinated until a certain age.  An older kid - unvaccinated and carrying a disease - can then act as the source of a DEADLY infection for the non-vaccinated kid.

We have a responsiblity to our fellow humans that over-rides all personal rights arguments.

That's the problem, without getting too technical.

I wonder actually what % gets to the starving children.

On some program before Xmas it said Red Cross or one of the big ones only receive about 10% the rest is in cost and Admin.

Does anyone have or know where to look for %'s.

Gee, that is dissapointing to hear, richo.

I don't know how someone sleeps at night whilst taking a wage like that from a charity.
Personally, I would do it for free
