Brent Stanley was born in Queanbeyan in 1979. It was his win in the Caulfield Cup on Arctic Scent in 1996 at the delicate age of 17 that thrust Brent into the racing limelight.

Brent began his career apprenticed to Amanda Langlar, before moving to Sydney under astute trainer Jack Denham. From there Brent made the move to Melbourne where his career really took off under David Moodie and Jim Mason.

During his apprenticeship, Brent won numerous premierships at both city and provincial tracks.

After 5 successful years in Sydney, Brent has decided once again to tackle the competitive Melbourne racing scene. He will be available for rides from Monday 29th May.

Aust Jockey Stanley Disqualified 12 Months In Malaysia
In Malaysia, stewards have disqualified Australian jockey Brent Stanley for 12 months & yesterday denied his application for a stay of proceedings until his appeal is heard by the Malaysian Racing Association on a date to be fixed. Stanley was disqualified following his ride on beaten favourite Jeram Corporate (for former Perth trainer Frank Maynard) in a 1400m event at Sungei Besi on October 11. (Oct 27)

In their summary the stewards found fault with Stanley's ride three times during the race.

They alleged that after the start he failed to take up a forward position which was available to him in compliance with his riding instructions; that after suffering some interference approaching the 1000m, he unnecessarily shifted his mount outwards resulting in his horse losing its advantageous position on the rail and as a consequence, raced five wide without cover; and from the 400m to the finish he failed to give sufficient rein to his horse resulting in it throwing its head up on several occasions and did not ride his horse out with his normal vigour and determination.

Maynard was warned that he would be expected to approach the stewards should he have any concern or query with any ride by his jockeys.

Stanley, who has enjoyed successful seasons in Macau before recently moving to Malaysia, may also appeal against the decision not to grant him a stay of proceedings.

Brent Stanley rides last race

Thursday, 4 November 2010
By Caryl Williamson

Group One-winning jockey Brent Stanley has ridden in his final race, opting for a new career as a trainer.

The 31-year-old weighed in for the last time after the eighth race at Flemington on Thursday when he was unplaced on Silver Bullion.

From December 1, he will become assistant trainer to John Sadler in a new venture with Troy Corstens to be known as Malua Racing.

"I will be assistant trainer to John Sadler and I'm really looking forward to it," Stanley said.

"I went to the sauna for the last time before that race.

"I've planned my retirement for some months and named this as the day.

"Now I can go home and sit down to dinner with my wife and kids more than twice a week."

Stanley, who won the 1996 Caulfield Cup on Arctic Scent and rode with success in Macau and other Asian racing precincts, said it had become increasingly hard to maintain his weight.

"I struggle to ride under 55 (kilograms)," he said.

"I've got no regrets, I've had a great career and ridden big winners here and overseas.

"I've worked with the best trainers during that time and have learned a lot.

"I've also broken my neck twice, fractured my skull and broken arms, legs and other bones.

"I want to go out now while I'm fit.

"I will continue to ride trackwork and I'm really looking forward to the future."

Troy Corstens, the son of trainer Leon Corstens who Stanley has been riding for over recent months, is a well-known buyer and syndicator with his most notable purchase Starspangledbanner.

Bought for $120,000 as a yearling, Starspangledbanner won more than $2 million on the racetrack and was Australia's champion sprinter of last season when trained by Corstens senior.

In a multi-million dollar deal, Ireland's Coolmore Stud purchased Starspangledbanner earlier this year and Aidan O'Brien prepared him for wins in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and the July Cup at Newmarket.

Sadler, who used to train for Lloyd Williams, took over Leon Corstens' team for some months this year while Corstens served a disqualification for a drug infringement.
