  - (By Ken Gentles)  Champion jockey Peter Graham has broken his wrist and is out of action for at least eight weeks after a freak fall from the Gordon Yorke-trained Cajun Gold in last Friday's barrier trial at Port Macquarie.
"I thought the horse was going to break down and tried several times to pull it up but I couldn't," Graham told from his hospital bed. I was really worried it would crash to the track and perhaps land on me so I decided my best course of action was to bail out." His dismount and landing though was not going to get him a 10 from the Russian judge, as he fell awkwardly and landed heavily on his wrist - breaking it for the third time.
"It is just the way it goes," he said philosophically. When asked why he bothers to ride in barrier trials he replied: "Gordon has given me a lot of good rides lately and I was only too happy to help him out, these things happen in racing." Ironically, the horse in question, whose leg was 'flapping in the breeze' when Graham went past him in the back of the ambulance, made an amazing recovery and did not break down at all.
"Someone told me when I arrived at the hospital the horse walked away and that stunned me, it suffered some type of nerve damage or something and made a full recovery as far as I know -so that's good news," he said. The hoop was set to be operated on late on Saturday and all in racing wish him a very speedy recovery.
Graham is not only the biggest star on the jockey stage in these parts, he is also one of racing's genuine nice guys. "I will, as usually happens when I am out injured, get to spend some more time with the family and that can't be all bad - can it?"
Graham is one of the hardest working most travelled jockeys in NSW and the time off is something he will enjoy. Just not the pain he had to go through just to to get some time off!

PETER GRAHAM - (By Ken Gentles) Champion hoop Peter Graham is pleased with the way things are taking shape as he recovers from a broken wrist, suffered in a barrier trial mishap at Port Macquarie two months ago.

But it has not all been smooth sailing as he strives to make his return to the track. Graham was horrified when the plaster was removed from his wrist a few weeks ago that movement in the joint was almost non-existent and he had little or no strength in his wrist at all.

"I thought the injury had not healed very much," the hoop said. "I honestly thought I was going to be out for months to come."

After several bouts of physio the movement was quickly restored and the jockey is hopeful of a return to trackwork in about a week and a half's time.

"I go back and see the doctor on Friday week (3rd of July) and hope to start riding trackwork the Monday after that," he said. "I won't be returning to race riding until I am completely fit and that may not be for a few weeks after that."

Graham is once again resigned to missing the Grafton carnival which is coming up fast: "You need to be right on your game up there and it would be hard to get the right rides now that I have been out for so long," he admitted.

The jockey took his family on an extended holiday of the north coast of Australia driving as far as Airlie Beach in Queensland during his convalescence.

Making the trek home at various stopover points like Rockhampton along the way - he was gone for a month: "It took about 20 hours to drive there and next time I will be flying that is for sure - but we had a great time."

He has been living like a normal bloke having a few beers at night and breakfast, lunch and dinner as well and was happy to see his weight had only risen to 60kg when he weighed himself at the races on Wauchope Cup Day last week.

"I have been doing plenty of walking since then and now am down to 58.5kg."

When asked what it was like living and eating like a 'normal' person he replied: "It's great - I love it, but the pay is no good!"
