You'll find that direct approaches to many celebs (except the uber A-list variety) would be accommodated.  Many people are willing to help students if the request is polite and reasonable.  He just needs a little bravado and gumption (both for this assignment and the vocation in general I'd imagine!).  Failing that, there's always Allhigh.
