Apache Cat ready to pounce in Brisbane
Warren Huntly
Wednesday, 29 April 2009

Glamour sprinter Apache Cat has arrived safely in Brisbane for the winter carnival.

"He settled back in there like he's been there all his life" trainer Greg Eurell said.

Apache Cat is likely to follow the same path as he didlast year.

"He'll run in the BTC Cup then into the Doomben 10,000. Depending on the weight he gets, the Stradbroke is still a slight possibility," Eurell said.

The BTC Cup will be run on May 9 with the Doomben 10000 a fortnight later.

Asked about Apache Cat's unplaced perfomance behind Takeover Target in the T J Smith Stakes, Eurell said: "Takeover Target was just far too good on the day but Apache Cat will be improved by the run and I'm looking forward to Brisbane."

I have some video of the race in the straight and can tell you that All Silent made a B linerun to the outside rail immediately on turning and was there at the 300M and still last.  His finishing run was phenomenal.

I wonder how that JustRacing bloke will record his Sectional LOL.

I never knew Greg Eurell was a champion Equestrian rider who represented Australia at the 1984 LA Olympics, and is also a plumber.

That's why his horses never have plumbing problems. lol

Hope Greg only charges his owners normal training fees and not at  plumbing rates cause they couldn't afford that.

It had to come but its still a sad day with Apaches retirement.

Hes given racegoers and the general public some great memories since his win at sandown as a 2yo at his first start .

From the early underdog status he rose to become a true superstar in his own right .

He will be looked after as he deserves and lets hope we see him leading out some GR 1 fields well into the future .

Well done boy , i'm gonna misss you

Crowd-pleasing sprinter Apache Cat has been retired because of a fractured sesamoid bone, according Melbourne media reports.

The baldy-faced star pulled up sore after finishing midfield in the Hong Kong Sprint on Sunday.

A veterinary examination confirmed the fracture with trainer Greg Eurell saying the decision to retire the eight-time Group I winner was an obvious one.

“He has a small fracture at the base of the sesamoid. The vets said you could operate but he would be eight years-old and you wouldn’t do it,’’ Eurell told heraldsun.com.au.

Apache Cat amassed more than $4 million in stakes, winning 19 races from 43 starts.

His most recent victory came on Cox Plate day when he took out the A J Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley.
