Caviar Will Become An Acquired Taste

Story Today's Comment with Racing Editor Chris Scholtz

Sunday, 3 May 2009: With due respect to Takeover Target, the most exciting performance in Australia on Saturday from a future perspective was seen at Caulfield where the brilliant filly Black Caviar confirmed that she has all the credentials to be a star of the spring carnival.

Just as she did on her debut when recording a five lengths blitz at Flemington last month, Black Caviar was in a class of her own as she ran away with the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes over 1200m by an effortless six lengths.

Her two dazzling performances have left many pondering what she may have been capable of if trainer Peter Moody had been able to have her ready for the major juvenile races at the Melbourne and Sydney autumn carnivals, more so considering the Caulfield trainer won the G1 Blue Diamond with Reward For Effort and another his fillies Headway was placed in the Golden Slipper.

Her time will come in the spring when Moody will have an enticing range of Group races to consider for the Bel Esprit filly.

Moody's view that she could be the best 2YO filly in Australia will get few arguments after her second exceptional effort. She merely coasted in a world of her own over the last 200m, runn ing the 1200m untested in 1.09.76 and her last 600m in 35.10.

The two races for older horses over 1200m on the day were run in 1.10.69 and 1.11.51.

With Moody attending the SA Derby meeting in Adelaide, it was left to his racing manager Jeff O'Connor to confirm that Black Caviar will now be spelled before beginning her spring preparation.

"Time will tell but the way she is doing it, the times and style of her makes it pretty hard not to get excited," O'Connor said.

"We can pick our marks in the spring now. She will be able to get into any race we see fit, and that is a big plus.

"She can control a race like good fillies and mares can."

Yes, Black Cavier is a very good filly indeed.

Looks very smart this one. Its only a matter of time so I'll say it now - owners: I urge you, dont sell your horse off to HKG or wherever!

She's a filly, highly unlikely she'll be sold to Hong Kong,  thankfully she is not a gelding.

I'm anticipating a spring performance much like that of Pharien in 1999; Emirates Classic and Salinger.
