QLDLisa Cropp suspended at The Farm in Brisbane from 16 June until 16 September for shoving her arm up going to the post, one would expect her to appeal her three months out. Damien Oliver was suspended for nine meetings and fined $5000 for his ride on Empires Choice in the Derby, free to ride on 30 June - guess UK goes bekoning.

the system needs to be looked at. the jockey has a right to appeal a charge and can find themselves in strange situations. i think that if the nominations are out for a meeting then the jockey should be able to ride till after that meeting. i think if a jockey appeals a charge they should also be able to take rides until the hearing has been, then if unsuccessful at the hearing the suspension should start after the nominations that come out on that day. so if the hearing is on Monday and the noms come out for the following the sunday the suspension should start from midnight sunday. Ive had riders beat a charge many times and be able to fulfill rides they have been booked for then other times they are not able to ride, even though the nominations are out and rides have been booked. the current rule punishes owners and trainers.

whats the point in starting a suspension in a weeks time? what is more important, punishing the jockey or giving owners value for their money? ridiculous, should start from today! shaun, how would you feel if you had a good jockey booked to ride your horse in a large field and you got the call to say he was suspended the day before your race and the only replacement rider was billy blogs making a comeback at 67 after having hip and knee surgery.

because if the rider gets say 7 meetings, he still has to serve them and that punishes the rider.

Gallopers, the race meeting concerned is 7 days away so there is ample time to find a replacement. I can understand the next day races for a stay of proceedings but simply can't for meetings which are more than a few days away. How many times do you see jockeys start suspensions asap if a big ride or carnival would be affected? There is no consistency with stewards on this. But the issue is also the suspensions. Rawiller should have got longer than 7 meetings. Easing up is the worst thing jockeys could ever do. They might not think too much about it but what the punters? He rides it out and Rock Kingdom maybe finishes 2nd as the stewards said. Let's use that argument. The exacta, quinella, trifecta and the big 4 results would have been affected. 7 meeting is nothing as he gets to ride in the slipper and ride in the latter part of the carnival.

There is no consistency with stewards on this.yes there is flaws in the system IMO and i see where your coming from with a rider starting his time asap or dragging it out with an appeal. the system has to be looked at so as to not punish the owner or trainer IMO, which it can do under the current appeals system. easy fixed, if the noms are out for a standard meeting start the suspension after that meeting. irrelevant if there is 7 days to find a replacement, the trainer and owner have booked their rider and they are the ones punished if the rider is removed.

Jockeys Scriven And Pope Lose Appeals
Jockey Shane Scriven believes he's been a victim of double standards from Queensland racing officials after losing an appeal against a suspension for careless riding.
Caloundra rider Ken Pope also lost his appeal against a six-meeting careless riding suspension but will be back in time to ride Swiss Ace in the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday week.
Scriven was suspended for seven meetings by stewards at Eagle Farm 10 days ago but appealed and has since been riding on a stay of proceedings.
Scriven conducted his own defence at the first level appeal hearing on Tuesday but was stunned when told by the appeal panel his sentence would begin immediately, not allowing him to fulfil engagements for Saturday's Hollindale Stakes meeting at the Gold Coast.
"When I was first suspended stewards instructed that I had to fulfil rides I had taken before acceptances for the following Wednesday meeting at Eagle Farm," he said.
"Now they (the appeal body) won't let me ride when I have taken a number of Gold Coast rides this Saturday.
"I've also got rides at Doomben on Friday but I was told after losing the appeal the suspension starts from tonight.
"It's double standards and a complete backflip."
Scriven had several rides for the Gold Coast including the Liam Birchley-trained Rags To Riches in the Group Two Hollindale Stakes (1800m) and last-start winner Rampant Lion in the Listed Prime Minister's Cup (1300m).
Scriven will also return from his suspension for the BTC Cup meeting.
The first level Appeals Board normally starts suspensions from the date of the last acceptances while stewards have a different policy and can grant up to five days leeway before commencing suspensions.
Rags To Riches was sent to Sydney for the Group One Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Randwick 10 days ago but faded to finish 13th, less than four lengths from winner Vision And Power.
Birchley and Rampant Lion's trainer Lindsay Gough have yet to find replacement riders for their respective runners.

I wonder if the stewards will have a chat with Huge Bowman after his ride in the 4th at Hawkesbury today. At the top of the straight, and again at the 200m, he shifted out alarmingly and caused severe interference. I seem to remember the same happening when he caused interference which led to two horses being destroyed a few months back. Withoutme I think was his mount. I would have thought he had learnt his lesson after that.

Melham out for 15 meetings Warren Huntly Wednesday, 29 April 2009
Jockey Ben Melham was suspended for 15 meetings on Wednesday for causing interference in the Lady Medallist Handicap (2100m) at Sandown Lakeside.
Melham pleaded guilty to the charge in which he shifted out from the inside rail at the 50-metre mark when insufficiently clear of other runners on Belong To Ten.
Belong To Ten finished second behind Deraismes and a subsequent protest lodged by Dean Holland aboard the third placegetter Joontoo Gemini was dismissed.
Melham's suspension begins midnight Friday and finishes midnight Saturday, May 16.
The ban, which encompasses five city and 10 country meetings, rules him out of next week's three-day Warrnambool carnival.

Newitt to appeal costly suspension Monday, 4 May 2009:
Craig Newitt will appeal the severity of a suspension which will cost him the ride on Pompeii Ruler in Singapore in two weeks.
Queensland stewards handed down a 10-meeting penalty after Newitt pleaded guilty to careless riding on Rightfully Yours in Saturday's Prime Minister's Cup at the Gold Coast.
Rightfully Yours lost the race to Mr Hornblower after a protest by Glenn Colless and Newitt was also fined $2,000.
Newitt rode at Sandown on Sunday and said he would lodge the appeal on Monday.
"I will be applying for a stay of proceedings," said Newitt who was hoping it would be heard this week.
As the suspension stands, Newitt will not return until May 22 and will miss the ride on last-start Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Pompeii Ruler in the Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) at Kranji on May 17.
