Across the border, Thoroughbred Racing South Australia chairman Philip Bentley described Racing Victoria's decision to suspend jumps racing as "regrettable". Bentley said recent horse deaths in Victorian jumps races were "unfortunate", but needed to be put into context, noting: "The welfare of horses & riders is the number one priority of all racing organisers. However, like any sport, there are dangers. I believe it is regrettable that the Victorian government continues to place pressure on the industry with respect to jumps racing. It is also regrettable that RV is responding to pressures emanating from anti_jumps & anti_racing groups." Bentley said TRSA would "monitor Victorian developments" & discuss RV's decision (due tomorrow) at its next strategic planning day. TRSA "does not intend to make any changes in SA as a result of a knee_jerk reaction by the Victorians". Bentley declared jumps racing is a "vital part of the industry in SA & we wish it to remain so. Like all parts of the racing industry, jumps racing is a great contributor in terms of employment & economic benefits. One only has to look at the hugely successful Oakbank Carnival to see what it means to South Australia. The Oakbank Carnival provides our 2 largest attended race days of the year. The Oakbank Carnival is an iconic event & we do not intend to consign it to the history pages." (May 12)
