Douro Valley is a case in point, you ask his connections and his jockey James Winks, he will tell you they are much better off going at the 1000m point than saving him for one last sprint at the 600 cause he will not have that instant acceleration, he is more a wind up horse.

This is my point about Braeloch.

i disagree with a lot that trainers and jockeys say about how their horses are best ridden, when i don't agree with the logic.
i backed research in the ajc derby that she won, when dittman took her to the lead a long long way out,a friend of mine who was sitting right behind her trainer clarrie conners said that at the 1200m mark, clarrie was swearing his head off, saying things like hes pulling her up,i was at the pub at the time, and saying to myself, she can't get beat, she won by 4,and dittman, did not go for home 1000m out, conners has never been able to read a race,he thinks his horses should be in a certain position in the run, whereas dittman had her in the perfect position, leading and going slow, clarrie then made some ridiculous statement like, she beat them being ridden upside down

Research was easily the best horse in that race, She was easily the best stayer in that race. It was probably the worst AJC Derby in history, i mean who ran second, Royal Pardon.

The logic only makes sense if you believe that Braeloch could have just gone from a slow pace to a fast pace in an instant. I am not of that belief, unfortunately we will never have a definative answer we can only ever speculate.

If you watch the Tulloch stakes from the week before, Braeloch was held up until coming to the turn and was unable to produce a turn of foot, he just one batted. Braeloch was held up until the straight and Starcraft beat him with more authority, granted 2000m was probably his better distance.

You can watch it at Best bets. so big thankyou to Best bets.  thumbsup

I should of course clarify the whole thing and i am sure you will agree Da Judge, it really comes down to what would suit the horse and race in question.

From the Racing Post -

The 45th and richest running of the this famous prize and an ultra competitive renewal with 12 previous winners in the line-up.

Not since Attraction in 2003 has this race thrown up a top class filly but DON´T TELL MARY has the potential to go on to big things after blowing this field away with a burst of speed in the final furlong that marks her down as well above average.

She looked a touch outpaced early and her head carriage isn´t totally convincing, but once switched out approaching the furlong pole she literally took off and the way she stormed through the final furlong suggests Cashman´s quote of 8-1 (from 25-1) for the Queen Mary, which is her next target according to her trainer, may be a touch generous.

The Hermitage, the only one of the first four home to come from a single figure stall, has run a blinder and she travelled like a very good filly close to the pace throughout before finding the turn of foot by the winner too hot to handle. She too looks capable of holding her own in Group company.

The return to quicker ground proved key to Leleyf, who was behind Little Scotland at York last time on good to soft ground, and she proved that run all wrong by sticking on really well, albeit from a handy draw, to grab some valuable black type.

Angelena Ballerina stayed on well up the inside rail and the way she saw her race out suggests she is ready to step back up to 6f, where she looks sure to find success.

The biggest eye catcher of the race was LittleScotland, whose run can be upgraded significantly as she was way off the pace from her wide draw and she didn´t have the clearest of runs well over a furlong out, but once in the clear she stayed on really strongly down the outside and she looks capable of winning in this grade.

Sheka kept on well from towards the back to run above market expectations, while Parbold Hill dropped away in the final furlong have been on the sharp end early.

First stakes winner
for Starcraft

DON'T Tell Mary booked her ticket to Royal Ascot in emphatic style on Wednesday when storming away to take the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley by four lengths. In the process, she became the first stakes winner for her sire, Starcraft.

The Tom Dascombe-trained filly, who is the first runner by Starcraft, was purchased by David Redvers as a yearling for £32,000 at the DBS St Leger Festival Sale.  Bred by Mascalls Stud, she is a half-sister to the Group 2-placed juvenile Cape Fear and out of the winning Polar Falcon mare Only In Dreams.

Starcraft was a brilliant performer in both hemispheres, registering three Group 1 wins from 7f to 1m4f in Australia before taking the Prix du Moulin and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in Europe under the care of Luca Cumani. He also ran third in the Queen Anne Stakes on his European debut andwas not disgraced when seventh in the Breeders' Cup Classic, his first try on dirt.

Starcraft, who is a strapping New Zealand-bred son of Soviet Star, spent a single season at Cheveley Park Stud, where he covered 105 mares at a fee of£10,000.

As well as Don't Tell Mary, his first crop of yearlings, which sold for up to 200,000gns last year, include the half-brothers to the juvenile Group/Grade 1 winners Dazzle and Donativum. The latter is now named OrionThe Huner and with Paul Cole.

Starcraft has not shuttled to the northern hemisphere since 2006. He stands the southern hemisphere at Arrowfield Stud in Australia, where he commands a fee of A$22,000.

Starcraft had his 2nd individual starter in a race over night in England.

Plutocraft, a son of Starcraft, is bred to appreciate longer distances than this in time, as his dam is related to a useful winner at 1m. He was coltish beforehand and green in the race, making a slow start, never really mounting a challenge and fading in the closing stages.
