Jockey Noel Callow re-wrote his own record book on Saturday at Kranji riding six winners from just seven rides.

Callow was not getting carried away with the outstanding day that he had though instead modestly saying:

'I'm very happy, It's the first time I've ever ridden six at a meeting.

'You always have to have a bit of luck and the show rolls on tomorrow, but yes I'm very happy.'

Callow's sixth winner for the day came on Brian Dean's Coffeetea in the $35,000 Class 5 1200m.

'There's no doubt Noel made all the difference,' said Dean.

'This horse just hasn't been putting in.

'I knew if he decided to, he could win but no I wasn't in the slightest bit confident especially as Noel had already ridden five!'

Jockeys Noel Callow and Mark Gallagher have both had their licences extended for a further six months by the Club.

Callow, 32, is currently the leading rider with 62 wins to his name including the Group 1 Patrons’ Bowl, Group 2 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Group 2 3YO Challenge (second leg) and Group 3 3YO Sprint.

Callow, who already boasts a Victoria Derby, Caulfield Guineas and two Australian Guineas (all Group 1) to his name, did not take long to live up to his "big race" jockey reputation with the rider now the leading group race winner with another five months of the season to go.

Appreciated for his vigour in the saddle as well as his outgoing personality, he has been a welcome addition to the highly competitive riding ranks at Kranji.

Callow goes to scale at 54.5kgs.

Affable Irish rider Gallagher, 38, currently has 13 wins and 29 minor placings from only 150 rides, with an impressive win/place strike rate of 28%.

Prior to riding in Singapore, he spent seven years in India, and has also plied his trade in Ireland, England, France, America, Macau, Malaysia and Singapore at Bukit Timah. He is a winner of 37 Classic and Grade races.

Noel Callow reached 83 winners for the season last Sunday which equalled the all-time record held by Saimee Jumaat.
Hopefully he will reach 100 by December 31st, so fingers crossed 

I'm so glad Noel is doing well o/s I really miss seeing his name on a horse in oz,I'm guilty of not keeping up with what happens outside oz. ;(

He's been a star on and off the track Kool - a breathe of fresh air in this place.

Nifty Noel Breaks Singapore Riding Record 


Australian Noel Callow has now won more races than any other jockey in a Singapore season with the ever popular rider notching win number 85 at Kranji on Friday night.

Technically Callow had gathered the record (84) in before the races started when Laurie Laxon's Hutton was elevated to first place following the disqualification of Valiant Master on May 25, but to all intents and purposes Top Spin (also trained by Laxon) was the one who allowed Callow to celebrate in style.

At the jump of the $95,000 Kranji Stakes ‘B' (1400m) (Turf) it resembled a dogs dinner when several of the field were either slow away or outpaced including the second favourite ($16) Itmaybeyou (Saimee).

Callow though hadn't missed the start and was able to place Top Spin ($11 Fav) up on the pace on the rails with Sky Bet (K Sara) for company out wide and Music Master (Opie Bosson) in the centre.

At the turn Callow hadn't moved on Top Spin and the four-year-old son of Arena was travelling well within himself.

Itmaybeyou was putting in the big strides down the centre of the track but it was too little too late with Callow throwing everything at Top Spin on the inside to score by a neck from Itmaybeyou with Music Master in third place a further two and a quarter lengths away.



"I'm over the moon to get the record," said Callow.

"I didn't expect to ride this many winners but I have such good support from trainers like Laurie Laxon and Don Baertschiger and from there I guess it has snowballed.

"I was stoked to get back on this horse (Top Spin). I rode him before for a win back in March and I know how good he is.

"First up he was always going to go well, so it's terrific to ride win number 85 on him."

Callow is now a conservative shoe-in to win the premiership with his nearest rivals being Robbie Fradd (52), Barend Vorster (46) and KB Soo (32), all having the all but impossible task of catching him with 22 meetings left.

Noel Callow is the new Mauritius champion and he was quickly swamped with new-found fans, journalists and photographers alike, who two days ago had never heard of him after wiining the jockey challenge.

Singapore’s champion-elect came to the Indian Ocean island a virtual unknown and will head home with the coveted trophy in his suitcase on Wednesday. After he snatched two surprise wins on Saturday from three rides, Callow had established a nine-point lead which finally proved decisive.

First Craig Williams as HorseWithNoName has informed us on another thread, now Noel Callow - our jockeys do do us proud.

Noel Callow's winning run has been torpedoed by Hong Kong stewards. Callow was suspended for four meetings after Sunday's International Sprint for allowing his horse Why Be to shift ground at the 800m mark, causing crowding to Absolute Champion. Callow's suspension ends on Dec 24.

Noel is riding today at the WA MM meeting.

he is being spruiked by Sky channel for the meeting there today but his manager didn't do him any favours with his only 3 rides.
all seems a bit weird to me,must be on holidays.

He managed to get two third placings for his efforts.

It is quite odd that it was known a couple of months ago that he would be there so why didn't he get more rides?  As you say, shaun, his manager sure didn't do him any favours.

Must say that I have no problem with putting money on any of his mounts that I fancy.

when these jockeys go overseas and become very successful i always ask myself,1.why can't the "industry" recognise their talents and 2.do something to keep them here and promote their talents ,ala Hong Kong,or they just big fish in a small pond?
yesterdays results for Noel would suggest to me he has serious talent because he had 3 of the crappiest rides on the program.

Shaun, I think the problem is that the hierarchy thinks they are bigger than the industry and as long as they are travelling OK, who gives a damn about the rest of the world?

I know why our jockeys go overseas, and there is big money on offer there, because they fight like gladiators to get a puny increase in the pay per ride.

Look at how Qld dragged their feet and didn't increase jockeys' pay levels for months (possibly years) after other states raised theirs.  But even then the jockeys had to fight like dervishes for that.

And when the trainers pay a fee for insurance on top of their noms & acceptance fees, as pointed out by Richo, it makes the blood boil to find later on that injured jockeys are given very little assistance at all.
