What is Group 1 racing coming to when we allow winners who get an advantage through handicap weight relief or restricting the opposition by some conditional clause that excludes a fair proportion of the horse population in the relevant age, to claim that distinction.

I can't see how the winner of this race could ever claim to be the best of anything.  Thumb Down

Thumb Up   I agree with your first comment.

chin The second one is arguable. Do you realise that group racings ONLY reason for existence is for breeding purposes ?

Despite what some people will tell us, that is basically the only purpose of placing races into group catagories. BREEDING and resultant Sales catalogues.

All the classics in EUROPE and the UK are closed to geldings. As far as i know the only race for older horses closed to geldings is the ARC.

These races where closed to geldings long before black type racing came into existence. The whole purpose of thoroughbred racing was the big circle - Breeding - racing - breeding - racing - breeding - racing.

Oh, I get it now. It's to make the performances of potential sires look better than they really are so that they can charge people more money in fees.

I am not sure that any particular stallions or their owners are advantaged by this ?

The rest of the world is not so quick to geld their horses, that is an Australianism or even A Southern Hemispherism.

Aidan O'Brien Fields Six Of 13 Remaining In Derby

Story By Paul Eacott, Racing Post

Tuesday, 2 June 2009: Aidan O'Brien has Fame And Glory and Rip Van Winkle among six possibles left in the Investec Derby after taking a trio of his contenders out at the five-day stage.

Freemanatle was the most notable of the absentees, while French Derby-bound Malibu Bay and last week's handicap winner Johann Zofanny were also taken out of the Epsom Classic.

A total of 13 colts were left in the race, with O'Brien also having Age Of Aquarius, Black Bear Island, Golden Sword and Masterofthehorse as possibles as he goes in pursuit of a third Derby win.

Last year's winning trainer Jim Bolger has taken Fergus McIver out of the race, but still has Stanjames 2,000 Guineas third Gan Amhras left in.

Sea The Stars will look to become the first 2,000 Guineas winner to follow up in the Derby since Nashwan in 1989 after being left in the race by trainer John Oxx.

All five of the horses trained in Britain stood their ground, with the home challenge, at the moment, likely to be led by Godolphin's Kite Wood and Crowded House whose trainer Brian Meehan is due to make a decision about his participation in the race early this week.
