The pic is Bruce enjoying the media scrum immediately after the 2009 Golden Slipper win, only 8 weeks ago.

RIP Bruce

They say they're having the service at Sunshine Coast Racecourse cause there isn't a church big enough to fit the attendees in.

100% correct OL, they expect over 2000 there next tuesday

Schofield prepares for emotional return to Brisbane
Clinton Payne
Thursday, 4 June 2009

Globetrotting jockey Glyn Schofield says if he can win the Brisbane Cup on Sydney mare Ready To Lift he will dedicate the victory to his late friend, Bruce McLachlan.

Like many in the Australian racing industry, Schofield is deeply saddened by the sudden death of the leading trainer.

It was the Queensland-based McLachlan who gave Schofield his first opportunity in Australia earlier this decade.

“He was the man that brought me out here all those years ago,” Schofield said.

“I was obviously going well in South Africa but when I came here the exposure I gained from my time with Bruce opened up a lot of new opportunities.

“I went to Hong Kong for four years and now I’m in Sydney, so I owe him a lot.

“I had some of the best times of my life when I was in Queensland with Bruce, fond memories that I will always carry with me.

“If I can win the Brisbane Cup on Saturday there is only one person I could dedicate it to.”

Schofield likes Ready To Lift’s chances despite a difficult draw.

“She goes into the race with faultless form over the distance and she handled the mud ok at Rosehill last weekend too,” Schofield said.

“The barrier draw [19] did us no favours but she’s a horse going into the race that has been set for it and she’ll be peaking on the weekend.

“If we can have some luck from the alley then I’m confident she’ll run a great race.”

Several other local journos have written lengthy articles charting the stellar career of Bruce McLachlan.  Personally, I'd forgotten several of the top-line horses he trained at the peak of his career.  The lilac colours on Gavan Duffy's shoulders were a feature of Brisbane racing for many years in the 80s and 90s.

Seems only a matter of time before we see one of Brisbane's feature races named in honour of the Big Fella.
