Thumbs Down Ron Dufficy and Kenneth Callander have both demanded in no uncertain terms that the TJ-Smith 1600m for 2yos should revert back to handicap conditions.

I have no idea how it would attract a better standard of horse by reverting back to a handicap. Why would top class two year olds be anymore likely to go for a handicap than a set weights championship event ?

This years renewal was absolutely top class. The result may not have been popular but that does not make it any less a top class renewal.

In my opinion there is more upside with the horses coming out of this race than what will come out of the Champagne stakes.

Your probably right there Matt.

Stakemoney accumulated mustn't be a requisite for gaining entry into this race because the winner had won (how) just $1200 in previous starts.

Off topic a bit but I did hear somewhere that the Goodwood should revert back to handicap conditions.
If this happens it may pave the way for a few other WFA races to revert back to Handicap conditions..ie.The Doomben 10000.

no need for looking at the prisemoney when there is only 14 acceptors.

I'd think the race would be better conducted as a handicap.

We shouldn't believe the best 2yos of the season have already fronted up to the BDs, Slippers, etc.  For lots of reasons there are smart 2yos who don't appear until late in the season - or because there are not many races for them, in their 3yo season.

There'd be a better chance of promising 2yos lining up in a handicap than in a set weight affair against horses who have already won their classic/s.  (Not the case this year, but it has been in the past.)

Freedman's suggestion that the race should be re-named because there are other races named in honor of TJS will rank with one of his sillier, uninformed ideas.  My memory tells me that QTC was the first club to honor TJ - in this race.

Your right about Freedman's idea...it was pure and utter rubbish and ill conceived on his part.

This was made in reference to removing the TJ Smith name from the 1600 mtr race and replacing it with Bruce McLachlan.

Bruce deserves a race of his own in memory but not at the expense of a time honoured named race already in existence

Especially as it's named after arguably the greatest trainer the world has known

And for that very rerason they have no right what soever to group 1 honors.
