Gold Coast keeps Magic Millions

 By Tony Meany

June 11, 2009 12:00am

QUEENSLAND Racing wants to rip up the Eagle Farm track rather than host the Magic Millions, which will remain at the Gold Coast.

QR chairman Bob Bentley said he wanted to talk with new Brisbane Turf Club chairman Kevin Dixon about upgrading the track as soon as he takes charge next month.

Bentley discounted any suggestion the project could be done in stages, and the urgency follows heavy criticism of the way the track performed after heavy rain during the winter carnival.

"If you are going to do a job it might as well be done right,'' Bentley said. "I don't believe in laying half the track and racing on the other half. It should all be done in one project.''

The project would mean the closure of the Eagle Farm track for several months and new tracks take at least a year to settle after they are put down.

Eagle Farm is in the running for a Cushion Track and Bentley said the decision whether it went to the Gold Coast or Eagle Farm still had to be made. "The Toowoomba Cushion Track has been finished and it cost QR $8million more than the government funding,'' he said.

The opening meeting on the Toowoomba Cushion Track will be held on July 11 when the Weetwood and the Toowoomba Cup will be run as a Saturday metropolitan meeting.

Bentley confirmed that the Magic Millions races will stay at the Gold Coast. He said QR allocated where races would be run and his board was "keen to have the race stay on the Gold Coast''.

I thought BIG BROTHER (BB) was coming back at Eagle Farm rather than the theme park on the Gold Coast.

Bentley must be in La La Land. The Toowoomba Track is far from finished & it's doubtful it will be finished this month

Why rip up the track just because Grahame Begg  doesn't have a wet track horse (All Silent). Five days after the Stradbroke meeting, I've just watched the first race at Eagle Farm today. The horse fifth on the rails, who was travelling from the jump, was extricated in the straight and bolted in. What is wrong with a track like that.
Bob and the boys would be far better off spending money on facilities for those of us who don't go to the members and wish to actually watch the races when we attend the course.

It will be up to the club. If offered funding for a new course proper, I'm sure they would jump at it.

My suggestion is to accept money for new facilities not the track. Race 2 - won by a horse back in the field who ran on. Was wide early but it is the 1000 m start at  Eagle Farm -only half a turn and barriers don't count

... and how many people would be there to watch it ?

Anyway, the facilities will be dealt with in the masterplan.

They are offering to do the track now. The track is going to be be done sooner or later. It might as well be sooner.

No need to wait until the townhouses are sold to retore the track.  smiley

Forget the grand plans so far they are 0 for 2 (sale of Doomben and new Gold Coast track) and if the purchase of Wadham Park doesn't go ahead that's 0 for 3.
I and others who go to the races on occasion might just happen to go a few more times if we actually had somewhere from where we could see the races. I don't think having to walk down a set of stairs that were absolutely full of pigeon shit and feathers is acceptable.

Make the masterplans 0 from 4.Toowoomba members were snowed with grand plans for new amenities.Still pigeon shit & feathers, the only additions
