Moody in line for mares' treble
Brad Waters
Friday, 12 June 2009

Top Caulfield trainer Peter Moody will be out to complete a hat-trick of wins with mares when Belle Famille runs at Betfair Park Sandown on Saturday.

Moody’s last two mares to hit a city track, Fairygem and the imported mare Ghostmilk, scored resounding wins at Sandown on Wednesday and Moody is expecting fellow import Belle Famille to be competitive in the Betfair Handicap.

“She’s having her second go over a mile-and-a-half on Saturday which will suit her,” Moody said.

“She’s a one-paced staying type of horse who’ll enjoy a bit of speed in the race so hopefully she gets it.”

Belle Famille was bought by former Test cricketer Simon O’Donnell’s OTI Racing at a Tattersall’s sale in England in 2007 but only arrived in Australia earlier this year with Ghostmilk.

“The OTI boys bought her at Tattersall’s but they couldn’t get her over here because of the EI situation which was going on when they were ready to bring her over,” Moody said.

“So we’ve lost a bit of her career but it may also have helped her because she’s nearly fully mature.

“The heavy track won’t worry her. She should be very competitive.”

Peter Mertens will have a rare ride for the Moody stable on Belle Famille

I would love to know Peter Moody's strike rate with first starters, wether they be 2yo-3yo or horse having their first start at 5. He is an outstanding trainer.

Still plenty of promising youngsters to come - Moody
Brad Waters
Sunday, 14 June 2009

Top Caulfield trainer Peter Moody continued his brilliant season with two-year-olds on Saturday but warns punters they may be in for a shock when the new season begins.

Moody has trained 17 two-year-old winners this season at a strike rate of just under 40% but said his sensational juvenile season might not necessarily turn into a domination of three-year-old ranks.

“We’ve had a bit of luck with our two-year-olds this season because we have been very patient with them and let them develop and tell us when they’re ready to race,” Moody said.

“But the reality is they have to come back and do it again as three-year-olds. That will be a big challenge for them.

“I think horses like Black Caviar, Reward For Effort and those sorts of horses will be excellent three-year-olds but they still have to come back to the track and prove themselves again.”

Moody said the task facing his two-year-old brigade was not necessarily to improve in their three-year-old season but to stay ahead of the chasing pack.

“It’s just like a junior footballer who dominates in the under-14s but when he gets to the under-18s, the rest of the kids on the field catch up,” Moody said.

“It’s the same with horses. They don’t lose their ability, they just develop at different rates and the others catch up with them and in many cases go past them.”

Moody said his stable alone had “plenty” of two-year-olds who aren’t ready to race yet but had shown enough on the track to suggest they will have very good three-year-old seasons.

“We’ll be bringing through a few more in the next few weeks that we want to have a look at,” he said. “There are some in there that will keep the two-year-olds on their toes.”

Caulfield trainer Peter Moody’s awesome spring team of youngsters continues to gather strength with the addition of promising colt Wanted to his stable.

Moody welcomed the top-class juvenile Tickets and adding Wanted to the likes of Black Caviar, Reward For Effort and Avenue will have the stable poised to dominate the three-year-old races during the Melbourne spring.

Michael Fagan, racing manager for Wanted’s majority owner Hayson Bloodstock, said the son of Fastnet Rock would join the Moody stable because his main aim is the Group I Caulfield Guineas.

“We were super happy with the job John O’Shea did with him but the syndicate had a meeting when the horse went for a spell and we decided to target the Caulfield Guineas with him,” Fagan said.

“Wanted is a group three winner in the Kindergarten Stakes and he’s a cracking type and he’s unbeaten on dry tracks.

“The Sydney spring will come up too quick for him so we decided to duck Sydney and go for the Melbourne spring .We felt the horse needs to be trained in Melbourne to give him every chance of winning the Guineas.”

Fagan said Wanted’s owners decided on Moody because he trained on the track where the Guineas would be run and because of a long-standing friendship between himself and Moody.

“I’ve been friends with Peter since he was a foreman for Bill Mitchell 20 years ago,” Fagan said. “We decided it was in the horse’s best interests to be trained at Caulfield and Peter was an obvious choice.”

Moody will be Wanted’s third trainer after beginning his career with the Hawkes stable but Fagan said Wanted could return to the O’Shea stable in the future.

“We’ll weigh it up at the end of the spring,” Fagan said. “He is a stallion prospect and if we decide to have a real go at the Sydney carnival in the autumn, there is every chance he could go back to John.

“John is a top trainer and a real professional; we won’t hesitate to give him horses in the future.”

Nathan exelby wrote a good piece on Peter Moody yesterday in the CM tracing his beginnings in Charleville in SWQ to where he is today amonghst the top trainers in OZ.The pic taken in the early 80's shows PGM as he was as a stripling before he could afford some of the finer things in life .Well that didn't work will try to do it again. Have to give him a Thumb Up

Stable flying - almost an embarassment of riches for the stable. Very expansive on radio this morning for Sport927 - for a guy with family on a Sunday morning he'd be well entitled to be short on for a wrap up of his stable.

Listening to him talk about his horses and goals reminded me of the halycon days for the Freedman stable in the 90's.

Incredible trainer.

Interestingly for breeding buffs Doubtful Jack is out of a Marscay mare who in turn is out of a Sir Tristram mare whilst Mr Charlie is out of a Maizcay mare who in turn is out of a Sir Tristram mare.

And they are both STALLIONS.  noteworthy

How is the doping charge going or have they got a few more to consider.

Has this been dismissed or just a fine.
