Races abandoned after seven-horse fall Clinton Payne Tuesday, 14 July 2009
A seven-horse fall has forced officials to abandon a race meeting at Ayr, Scotland, on Monday night.
Seven of the 12 runners came down rounding the home turn during the third race.
The incident was blamed on heavy rain that had fallen before the meeting, causing two horses to slip and bring down the other five.
All seven horses that came down got back to their feet but jockey Joe Fanning, who was aboard All In The Red, which was brought-down, broke his collarbone.
A track inspection and stewards' inquiry took place and the track was declared unraceable.
"It is terribly frustrating, and it was an horrific incident,” Stuart Morrison, a director at the track, told Racing UK.
“I've been going racing for 40 years and I've only seen one comparable and that was at Hamilton 20 years ago.”
