Doomben's thong flip-flop by Brisbane Racing Club
Article from: CM
August 01, 2009 12:00am
THE Brisbane Racing Club has relaxed its stance on the great Australian thong with Doomben declared a flip flop-friendly zone again after a three-year ban.

Under the newly formed Brisbane Racing Club banner (which now manages both major Brisbane race tracks) any form of footwear is welcome in the public precincts at Doomben or Eagle Farm racecourses.

The new rule comes after a bizarre ban on thongs in 2005. Memorably, thong-wearing punters were turned away at the gates – causing a mini-uproar of sorts.

Brisbane Racing Club CEO Stephen Ferguson said it made sense.

"The Brisbane Racing Club is not about to quash the glamour of racing, but for the punters who are seeking a more relaxed day at the track, we can offer that too," he said.

The readers aren't too happy though Thumb Down

Who would wear thongs to the races.

Great ruling by the Brisbane Racing Club to welcome back "Boardshorts" Mick.

You got money.....you're welcome.....I remember when the casino first opened in Brisbane...one had to be dressed to the nines to get entry....all you need now is the cash............

Oh great decision Steve Ferguson..NOT!! Now there will be more ferals at the races to ruin a day out for families, and others, which racing is still struggling to get back to the tracks. How do bloody thongs make the day more "relaxed"? Then some idiot will cut his feet or slip over, then sue the place for allowing inappropriate footwear. Both codes of racing, gallops and harness, need to clean up their acts and keep ferals out of the tracks. But some of the problem is that many licencees are feral also, dress terribly, and do nothing to make the sports look more "professional". Is it any wonder that Sydney and Melbourne get much better crowds at their meetings, due to being more professional, and being pro active, something Queensland doesn't appear to understand

If you have enough money to go to the races & bet then you have enough to buy yourself a cheap pair of closed in shoes, be they slip on canvas or something else. Thongs belong in the home/garden.

Thought it was rather odd for the Club to bring in this pollicy & not suprised it's been revoked. Problem is they probably chased away all the dyed in the wool punters who attended every mid-week meeting. These punters have probably already developed bad habits by attending TAB's & wouldn't go back now anyway. Clubs don't want old-timers who have the trannys at the ear these days. More progressive to go after the Young drinkers/ who don't give a about the races.  lol

Brisbane---how backward to have this rule over the last few years.

At least its now righted.

Why would one want to wear thongs to a race meeting?

The kind of old timers who used to frequent every race meeting for the last 30 years. noteworthy  Stubbies, thongs, ciggies, radios. Mainly only hang around the bookie rings anyway.

Unless I've missed it along the way, I'm unaware of any policy of the BRC in regard to thongs.  nowink

What the intrepid journo is possibly referring to is a (now defunct) policy of BTC that if thongs were worn at Doomben, spurs must also be worn.  In recent times spurs have dropped out of the fashion stakes, so this seems to have brought a change in thinking.

As Geoff asks:

Why would one want to wear thongs to a race meeting? chin

I have to say I've never seen a patron at a racecourse wearing thongs (with or without spurs) since my days in the Flat.  I'll wear thongs today and see how many match me.

Very important issue to discuss, this. lol

It's had a HUGE impact on crowds in recent years.

Thongs at races only suitable for single guys. The married ones need somewhere to conceal their days winnings

Are you the steel-capped boots and leather jacket variety?

Not the BRC, probably the BTC? Started 3 years ago when the thong wearing old timers & I think also the sandle wearering gurus were refused entry at the gates during the start of the Winter Carnival. Plenty of security was put on to make sure none of these fashion types were allowed entry.  lol

Maybe the "thinking"behind this move was to try and capture some Rocklea regulars now that venue is off limits.
There was one notable punter,a great guy too,who has sadly passed away, who often arrived in shorts and thongs at Rocklea in its heyday. He was a deadly punter connected to a top stable and very rarely missed .

I remember seeing big Russ down at the Gold Coast harness track wearing thongs and devouring a burger...most patrons thought it was normal.

Isn't there a big fashion difference between Racing Carnivals with the big crowds & a meet with only a couple hundred attending?
Can understand the Members being off limits for thongs but a punter just wanting a casual day out, I can't see the problem. Let 'em eat burgers & bet with the bookies.
Qld summer meetings are hot so stubbies & thongs should be the go for all attendees.

Anything should go in the public areas, but members should abide by dress standards

Thumb Up  yeah public areas are fine. I wear thongs at home, in the yard, at the shops, to the beach.
I'm a big thong wearer but never yet to the track.  chin Never too late to expand my horizons.
