Stewards Conclude Inquiry Into Betting Activities [14/08/2009]
Racing NSW Stewards today gave consideration to the evidence heard over three sittings in respect to their investigation of betting activities across a number of country and provincial race meetings between 20th June 2008 and 15th August 2008.
This investigation was commenced upon referral by the Hunter and North West Racing Association Stewards at the conclusion into an inquiry into the handling of Shyspin in Race 8 at the Gunnedah Jockey Club on 8th August 2009.
What was established during the investigation was that the person operating a betting account (not being the account holder or a licensed person) was involved in a series of wagering activities between 20th June 2008 and 15th August 2008, which indicated a distinct bias towards horses ridden by licensed jockeys Allan Robinson and Dale Spriggs, with such offers to wager being at odds well in excess of what was generally available in the betting market for the particular race.
It was further established from the mobile telephone records of Allan Robinson and Dale Spriggs that during the relevant period there was a sequence of phone contacts between the two licensed jockeys and the account operator.
Whilst the account operator gave evidence to the Stewards by telephone from the offices of his legal representative on 4th February 2009, he later declined to co-operate further with the inquiry by providing information requested by the Stewards.
Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that a relationship existed between licensed jockeys Allan Robinson and Dale Spriggs and the operator of the betting account, upon consideration of the material before them the Stewards found that there was insufficient evidence to support a finding that any breach of AR175(i) had occurred; namely that information concerning the prospects of their horses in a race had been given by licensed jockeys Allan Robinson and Dale Spriggs for any monetary or other consideration.

it happened under their noses, betfair provided them with information, but our stewards found that their was insufficient evidence that any breach had occurred,FFS.

i'm curious to see the outcome of the inquiry into race 2 from saturday, where EMPIRE PLACE was heavily backed,in a field that had about 5 leaders in it,yet he leads all the way,the take was a notable absentee from the leading division.

kenny callander always says,at least the stewards are asking questions, kenny, asking questions and taking no action,is like getting ready for sex, without having a woman there,it achieves fk all.

back to the 1st case, can you imagine investing heavily on a certain stock,on the stockmarket, you admit to knowing a number of officials involved with the said company, its proven you have communicated with them numerous times over the phone, the stock goes through the roof,do you think you would escape insider trading charges?unlikely

memo to any would be insider traders, come ply your trade in the racing game,1stly,its unlikely you will even get investigated,2ndly,should you be unfortunate enough to be investigated, just decline to co-operate,and the inquiry will be dropped.
ps,in the extreme unlikelyhood that you're convicted, you won't be sent to gaol, like you would be for insider trading on the stockmarket, you won't even cop a substantial fine,no,you might get a warning off from setting foot on a racecourse, for a certain amount of time.
pretty strong deterrents aren't they?

It would be interesting to see "the evidence" such as it is in this case.
Stewards probably had the benefit of "legal advice" that the "evidence" was insufficient and accepted it leaving a big question mark over the affair. what

Haven't seen any press coverage either which is unusual. Thumb Down

When has lack of evidence ever worried stewards before?

You need to make sure all the tags are closed Matt,

ie
for every <table>, there needs to be a </table>, same as <div>, there needs to be a corresponding </div>

wink
