Warwick Barr
Tuesday, 18 August 2009

A jockey who has defied medical advice to ride again and a horse brought out of retirement will be trying to make the most of second chances at Randwick on Saturday.

Damian Browne, who rides with a steel rod in his leg, will continue an association with comeback galloper Court Command in the Warwick Stakes.

“I’ve never ridden in Sydney so it will be a fantastic opportunity,” the 36-year-old Caloundra-based jockey said.

Trainer Liam Birchley tried to book a leading Sydney jockey for the weight-for-age race but when his search was unsuccessful, he turned to Browne for a second time.

Browne rode replaced Hong Kong-based jockey Zac Purton on Court Command in the Stradbroke Handicap and he was in the saddle when the stallion lumped 60.5kg to a first-up Eagle Farm win last week.

A Sydney weight-for-age victory would cap a remarkable comeback for both horse and jockey.

“About three years ago I smashed my leg in a fall and had two plates and 17 screws inserted,” Browne revealed.

“I was out for two years and then three weeks after coming back I broke the same leg in a different place and I was out for 10 months.

“The doctors told me to give racing away because they reckoned my leg wouldn’t stand up to the rigors of riding but I was determined to ride again.

“As it is now, I can only take four rides at a meeting while I’ve got the rod in my leg.”

Browne has ridden two Group I winners, highlighted by his 1996 South Australian Derby success on the Victorian-trained Cheviot.

He thinks Court Command is going well to put him back in the national spotlight in the Group II Warwick Stakes.

“Obviously he beat moderate opposition last week but he carried weight and he ran good time,” Browne said.

“Court Command likes to dictate and looking at the noms I think Liam has found the right race for him.”

A six-year-old, Court Command, the 2006 Golden Rose winner and a Caulfield Guineas placegetter in the same year, stood one season at stud in Queensland before his racing career was resurrected under Birchley’s care with instant success in the BTC Sprint at Doomben in May

I think it is great that Browny gets a stay but where the f is the consistency.

Craig Williams should have been allowed to fulfill his engagements. Too Easy.

Have a good Xmas Mr Browne and hope you catch some Muddies on your hols.

No I didnt and again that should have No bearing on when his suspension starts.

What I mean is it seems common sense was used on this occasion, where Owners, trainers and punters are not inconvenienced.

Might be good for Mr Browne and may not work out but at least if they do it for all hoops Good.

I backed him and the one in melb and the f u kin one in perth and the Kav horse that went from 1st to 4th f u k protests.

Again it is the thoughts of a Steward, who has taken the job because he Cant get any other job where he can be a god.

What experience is required other than sniff Blobs ass or you are sent on your way.

There has been Too many mistakes by them Australia wide in the last 12 months in ALL codes.

They should all be given a Long holiday and a refresher course.

Sorry Overs too lazy to put the 2nd part in Protests.

Just rambling on, I dont drink but I still babble on.

Just saying
1/ I didnt see the replay
2/ It shouldnt have anything to do with a stay of suspension
3/ I cant see how Mr Browne would deliberately try and bring down another hoop.
4/ I hate stewards, Police and Politicians
5/ I am old Bitter Sad and dont give a f.

Have a great Xmas Overs and lets hope we all get Overs and Winners.

Interesting as I didnt know of him personally and feel it is a shame that he still drinks and cant handle it.

When you look back and see how many young stars have taken the easy way of being followers and drink and do drugs.

What a waste of life, too much to do and too little time.

Thanks Overs for the insight, bugger can ride but sounds like a blunt tool.

He isn't the first and won't be the last jockey, or indeed person, not to be at his best after a few drinks.

He's been riding mine since he first arrived at the Sunshine Coast in 2003 and I've never had a problem with him.

Thoroughly professional when riding and provides excellent and useful feedback, unlike many of his colleagues.

I am amazed that some mysterious Sunshine Coast resident, with only 25 posts to datel, can come on here and sully the name of the best jockey in Qld and one of the best in Australia.

He is an outstanding jockey and everyone that knows him regards him as a top bloke and very genuine.

If he drinks a bit, which I cannot confirm nor deny, I for one don't care so long as it does not affect his riding, which it clearly doesn't.

Overdue, clearly has an issue with a few people at the Sunny Coast

Amazing effort by the star SC hoop at Doomben on Wed.  He got tossed off a couple of times - once in an act more fitting for a circus.  But he had no qualms about jumping back on.

The horse didn't repay his persistence though. nowink

A good day out for Damian Browne at Doomben yesterday.

He won the last on recent Heathcote acquisition MONDEAN.  The smart sprinter had no problem at the 1200 on the wet track.

Chatting with Heathcote after the race, I commented "I still had a few concerns on the turn".  The normally expansive Heathcote made a short reply, "D Browne".    lol

No doubt Heathcote still has nightmares over the fact Browne wasn't aboard WOORIM in the Emirates - like many of us do.
