Jockey Norberto Arroyo Jnr has been charged in upstate New York with possessing and intending to sell cocaine after he was found with about 12 grams during a traffic stop.

Police in Saratoga Springs say the 33-year-old from Winthrop, Massachusetts, was pulled over on Sunday morning a few blocks from Saratoga racecourse where he has been riding during the six-week racing season that began on July 29.

Police say Arroyo was stopped for not wearing a seat belt and that he's also charged with driving with a suspended licence.

He was arraigned on two felony drug charges and ordered to be held in the county jail on $US25,000 ($A30,443) bail.

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board suspended Arroyo's racing licence after the arrest and set a hearing for Friday.
