The signs were ominous even before the eight-race card at Pakenham yesterday started. Trainers Peter Snowden and Peter Moody only had one runner engaged for the day, each in separate races, with both starting short-priced favourites.
Snowden's sole representative, lightly raced filly Dysphonia, easily dispatched her opposition in the opening event, the $12,000 Star FM Super Vobis 3yo Maiden Plate (1400m), with a strong finishing burst down the outside after settling in a midfield position.
In the run to the line, Dysphonia ($2.50-$2.70-$2.50 fav) defeated Kornati ($10-$13) by three lengths with Moonafeth ($5-$6.50) a further half length away in third.
Upon dismounting, winning rider Aaron Spiteri suggested there are plenty of wins await the daughter of Lohnro.
"She quickened like not a bad horse," Spiteri said.
"I probably travelled a bit tight for her, she's a big mare and struggled around the home bend.
"But she got clear on the home turn and sprinted well.
"She'll probably go up to a mile now in a mid-week race and go through her classes," he added.
By Lohnro out of Stutter, Dysphonia is appropriately named as it's a medical term for disorders of the voice.
Stutter enjoyed a fluent career herself, winning four races in the metropolitan area - three in Melbourne and just the once in Sydney.
Meanwhile in the fifth event of the day, Peter Moody and Luke Nolen combined with Tan Tat Dancer in the $12,000 Battery Zone Pakenham 0 - 72 Handicap (1750m).
In a tight three-way finish, Tan Tat Dancer ($2.25-$3.80) clinged onto victory ahead of equal favourites Black Artois ($3.20-$3.50-$3.30 eq fav) and Hold That Lion ($3.20-$2.90-$3.30 eq fav).
The well-supported Head Perfect ($13-$17-$12) finished a further four lengths away in fourth.
Nolen clinched the race with a bold move, booting three lengths clear at the top of the straight.
"I tried to get as much daylight between me and the rest of them as I could," Nolen said.
"It was a good effort because he's taken the rest of the field up to the runaway leader, but that's his class and we won't get excited now.
"We'll place him well in the right grade and hopefully win another one.
"He's not the fastest horse but he's genuine," Nolen added.
