Both Jenkins (who trained 1998 Cup winner Jezabeel & is preparing Figure Of Speech for this year's Cup) & Mathews "are facing improper conduct charges by Racing Victoria stewards for assaulting each other". At a Victorian Racing Appeals & Disciplinary Board hearing yesterday, both "admitted landing punches & as the fracas continued, Jenkins admitted to kicking Mathews in self-defence". MELBOURNE Cup-winning trainer Brian Jenkins and fellow trainer Ray Mathews have accused each other of a king-hit in a heated incident at Cranbourne training centre on April 30.

Both Jenkins, who trained 1998 Cup winner Jezabeel and is preparing Figure Of Speech for this year's Cup, and Mathews are facing improper conduct charges by Racing Victoria stewards for assaulting each other.

Both admitted landing punches and as the fracas continued Jenkins admitted to kicking Mathews in self-defence.

The tension was apparent at yesterday's Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board hearing, as first Jenkins, then Mathews gave their version of what triggered the altercation.

The RADB heard that as Mathews was hosing a horse down after trackwork, Jenkins asked him not to use his sponge.

"He continued and I said, 'C'mon, mate, put the f------ thing back'. He said, 'Yeah, yeah', then all I can remember is a fist coming at me. He king-hit me to the left side of my face," Jenkins said.

RADB chairman Judge Russell Lewis said he was puzzled why Mathews would assault Jenkins when he was attending to a horse.

"It doesn't make a lot of sense. It would be a dangerous thing to do," he said.

Mathews told the board Jenkins was the agitator.

"I turned my back and was struck by a round arm to my left ear," he said.

After attempting to fend off Jenkins with his open hands, Jenkins pulled Mathews' jumper over his head.

"He then kicked me once in the nuts and once just above," Mathews said.

Mathews, who tried to qualify for the 1968 Olympic Games as a light welterweight boxer, admitted he landed "at least one punch".

Jenkins required treatment at Langwarrin Medical Clinic.

The hearing resumes today.

Melbourne Cup Trainer Suspended For Improper Conduct
Tuesday, 22 September 2009: Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Brian Jenkins has been suspended for three months and fined $5000 following an inquiry into an alleged fight with another trainer at the Cranbourne training centre.

Jenkins and fellow trainer Ray Mathews were called before the Victorian Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Monday to answer charges arising from an incident at Cranbourne on April 30.

Jenkins, who trained 1998 Cup winner Jezabeel and is preparing Figure Of Speech for this year's race, was charged with improper conduct.

He pleaded not guilty although he admitted during Monday's hearing that he punched and kicked Mathews “in self defence”.

Jenkins alleged Mathews threw the first punch after a dispute arose over the use of a sponge while a horse was being hosed down.

Jenkins said Matthews was using his sponge without permission and asked him to stop.

However RADB chairman Judge Russell Lewis agreed with Mathews' version that Jenkins was the aggressor.

Mathews, who was a former amateur boxer, admitted he landed "at least one punch" and Jenkins later required medical treatment.

The RADB also took evidence from Dayle Brown, Racing Victoria's General Manager – Integrity Services.

Both Jenkins and Mathews appeared with legal counsel before the hearing was adjourned on Monday.

The RADB board today found the charge against Jenkins proven and imposed a three months suspension to begin on October 3 along with a $5000 fine to be paid by December 31.

Mathews also pleased not guilty to a charge of improper conduct.

The charge against him was dismissed.
