DENMAN, a third generation winner of the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1400m) at Randwick two weeks ago, will try to follow in his father’s hoof steps in the Group I $1,008,000 Age Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

The last three-year-old to win the Stan Fox Stakes and the Caulfield Guineas in the same year was Denman’s (ex Peach by Vain) dad Lonhro (ex Shadea by Straight Strike), in 2001 and Lonhro’s sire, Octagonal (Zabeel - Eight Carat by Pieces of Eight), won the Stan Fox Stakes in 1995 before finishing third in the Caulfield Guineas (to Our Maizcay).
Denman’s trainer Peter Snowden is confident Denman can add the Guineas to his impressive resume with a big performance in the Caulfield classic this Saturday. And nobody has been closer to this equine family than Snowden.
Assistant trainer to John Hawkes when the Ingham family raced Octagonal and Lonhro he has steered Denman to six wins from seven starts for Sheikh Mohammed whose Darley operation bought out the Ingham’s Woodlands Stud lock, stock and barrel.
“I could not count how many hundreds of horses have gone through my hands over the past 22 years, but I know there have been only two champions,” Snowden said.

“Octagonal and Lonhro were absolute freaks who could win on all track conditions, race in any direction and never needed excuses.”
Snowden can only dream that Denman will achieve champion status like “The Big O” and his son “Little O”, but he is satisfied this third generation star is on track to make this Saturday “D” day!
“Denman is very similar to Lonhro in so many ways,”

“Like his dad, his colour is jet black, he has a lay-back attitude with track work and on race days.

“A relaxed attitude is important for a good racehorse as it won’t fall apart and lose the plot when the racecourse is abuzz on a big race day,” he continued.
“A relaxed racehorse will go to the gates in a good frame of mind.”
Lonhro went into the Caulfield Guineas at his fifth start for the season and his 10th career start. He emerged undefeated as a three-year-old with seven wins. Denman has less mileage – the Guineas will be his eighth start. He was beaten on debut at Flemington but won his next three starts as a two-year-old and is undefeated in his three runs this season, including a Group One win in the Golden Rose at Rosehill in August.
Snowden said he was not concerned that Denman’s current preparation had stretched out from mid-June, as the colt had been freshened with five weeks between runs in July-August.
“It would be a big call to say Denman was shaping as another Lonhro or Octagonal, but the signs are there,” he said.

“He is a very rare type of racehorse; he wants to please you all the time.”
During his elite career, Lonhro made Caulfield Guineas Day his own winning Group One races for three consecutive years. After winning the Caulfield Guineas in 2001, he returned to win back-to-back Yalumba Stakes in 2002 and 2003.
Denman’s dad and grand-dad pleased connections in a monetary manner with Octagonal earning $5.89 million and Lonhro $5.79 million. Denman has banked $944,375 to date and the pen is poised for a $600,000 winner’s cheque in The Age Caulfield Guineas.

Denman 'on target' for Caulfield Guineas
By Mark Ryan
Melbourne
Tuesday 6 October 2009, 3:50pm

The Peter Snowden stable was on good terms with itself as classy colt Denman prepared to make it seven straight wins and emulate his sire Lonhro by winning Saturday's $1 million Caulfield Guineas.

Snowden considers that during his 22-year involvement in racing, both with the John Hawkes team and in his own right, he's worked with only two champions - Lonhro, who stormed home to win the 2001 Caulfield Guineas and his sire Octagonal who finished third in the 1995 Guineas before winning the Cox Plate that year.

A Guineas win would continue Denman's journey towards maybe becoming the third.

"Saturday is going to prove that if he happened to win but it's a little unfair to compare him to what Lonhro's done on the track because he's still got to do it," said Paul Snowden, Melbourne stable foreman for his father.

"We think he can but Saturday will tell."

"He's done nothing wrong to date and on what he did this morning he's right on target."

Denman is unbeaten in a preparation that began six starts back on June 13 with a win in a Kilmore two-year-old maiden over 1112m.

He then won over 1100m at Flemington and 1200m at Sandown before going to Sydney where he won three successive Group races, the Run To The Rose (1300m) and the Golden Rose (1400m), both at Rosehill, and the Stan Fox Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

Paul Snowden won't have it that the colt might have had enough for the time being, as opposition trainers are hoping.

"He's fine, he's more settled and happier where he is. He has familiarised himself with the surroundings at home (Flemington)," he said.

Snowden was happy with barrier seven in the 11-horse field as the stable was hoping for "somewhere around the middle".

"The speed has drawn inside him so hopefully it can be just a genuine tempo and every horse gets his chance to win and it's a fair break."

Denman, to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy who is unbeaten on the colt in three rides, has tightened up in betting markets since Tuesday's barrier draw from $2.80 to $2.60 favouritism with TAB Sportsbet fixed odds after two of his main rivals, Trusting and So You Think, drew out in gates 10 and 11 respectively.

Trusting, runner-up to Denman in the Group One Golden Rose two starts back, is $4.50 second pick with Manhattan Rain, who drew barrier six, solid at $6 ahead of So You Think ($9).

On-pacers Starspangledbanner ($12) and Bill Stutt Stakes winner Carrara ($16) drew gates one and two respectively while last Saturday's Flemington winner Tickets ($14) drew barrier eight with Stutt runner-up Extra Zero ($14) to jump from five.

Agree on both points above - I am actually suprised how weak Lonhro's was in hindsight.

Ravarda, Octagonal, Strategic and Flying Spur were the future group 1 winners to come out of that race.

Lonhro and Dash For Cash were the only future group 1 winners to come out of the 2nd generation Guineas.

Royal Code's career best afterwards was probably his placing behind Lonhro in the Mackinnon the next year.

Pure Theatre did SFA afterwards from memory.

From memory, Lonhro's year was just as well-anticipated as this years.  Some never came on from that year, but the lead up and the feel at Caulfield that day was a ripper.

Overseas duties beckon Darley star
Brad Waters
Friday, 15 January 2010

Darley trainer Peter Snowden says there is a chance star colt Denman could be lost to Australian racing after the Australian Guineas.

The Golden Rose winner impressed with a comfortable win in an 800-metre jumpout at Flemington on Friday morning with Snowden stepping up Denman’s preparation to his sole autumn goal, the Group I Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 6.

“The Guineas is the only race we are targeting with him,” Snowden, who was at Flemington to watch the jumpout, said. “It’s the race we think best serves his future as he is a colt with enormous stallion potential.

“The sole focus is getting him fit to win the Australian Guineas. No other races in Sydney have even been considered. There is every chance he could not even run in Sydney.”

Snowden said the striking son of Lonhro would most likely be spelled if the colt took out the $750,000 feature but Snowden said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Denman was called up to the Godolphin stable after his autumn campaign  tears

“If he wins the Guineas, he will go for a break before the spring,” Snowden said. “He’s going to make stallion but I wouldn’t be surprised if Godolphin want him to race in the northern hemisphere season.”

Denman could make his first autumn appearance in next Friday night’s Group II Carlyon Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley before tackling the Group I C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 6.

“He’s filled out into a beautiful horse now,” Snowden said. “But because he’s bigger and stronger, it’s taking longer to get him fit so we might go to Moonee Valley first.

“If not there are a couple of options at Caulfield on the 26th of January.”

Snowden said Kerrin McEvoy would ride Denman throughout his Melbourne campaign irrespective of the stable’s Sydney runners.

Dubai season runs from early November to end of March, when it finishes with the Dubai World Cup meeting

Should imagine if Denman is spelled after his next few races, until the spring, he will probably head to Dubai then

As Denman's Gold Cup prep looms, either in the Irish Hennessy or the Aon Chase, Tony McCoy has quashed speculation he has been offered the ride at Cheltenham in March.

Paul Nicholls' 10-year-old put up a tremendous weight-carrying performance to claim a second Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury in November, and would be seeking to become only the second horse to regain the Gold Cup.

The first to reclaim the blue riband was stablemate Kauto Star when he beat Denman 12 months ago, and the pair are all set for a titanic third clash at the Festival.

With Ruby Walsh likely to stick with Kauto Star, a new rider will be needed for his big rival unless connections once again call on Sam Thomas or Christian Williams.

Asked if he had been offered the ride in the Gold Cup, McCoy, speaking on At The Races, said: "Certainly not. I'm sure whoever does get the ride will be very lucky. I'd certainly gladly appreciate it if it did happen.

"His performance in the Hennessy was second to none. If they (Denman and Kauto Star) both get there it will make for a great race."
