Think Money was placed as a maiden in the Moonee Valley yesterday - but she's not the first maiden to be placed in the race.

There was one I can remember that not only ran in the top three but started close to favourite.

$12 bet this afternoon of your choice for the first one to name the one I'm thinking of.

One pick at a time and you have to wait for three other people to have a go before guessing againif you get it wrong.

Hints :

i) I backed it

ii) Not this century

iii) In his day, was always being referred to as 'Australia's Best Maiden' just like Glowlamp was.

iv) He liked Moonee Valley, - he was also placed in another 1600m open age Group 2 race there as a Maiden.

v) I had my first bet in 1971

vi) Trained by Ron Maund I believe.

Answer : Like A Tiger 1973

From this article I found through google  it seems Thong Classic had won a Colac Maiden.

"Thong Classic may be your archetypal Melbourne Cup runner but he remains so far down the order of entry he is not certain to make the field. Glenn Lester reports.

Thong Classic may be your archetypal Melbourne Cup runner: a smart handicapper, stays well, not up to weight-for-age standard but worthy of a place in our equine institution. The sort of horse who is the backbone of the race.

He's a horse who was given time to develop, spending 10 months of his two-year-old season in a paddock, and whose career, says trainer Pat Carey, has "barring explanation, never taken a backward step" since he won a maiden at Colac in March, 2001."
