Think Money was placed as a maiden in the Moonee Valley yesterday - but she's not the first maiden to be placed in the race.
There was one I can remember that not only ran in the top three but started close to favourite.
$12 bet this afternoon of your choice for the first one to name the one I'm thinking of.
One pick at a time and you have to wait for three other people to have a go before guessing againif you get it wrong.
Hints :
i) I backed it
ii) Not this century
iii) In his day, was always being referred to as 'Australia's Best Maiden' just like Glowlamp was.
iv) He liked Moonee Valley, - he was also placed in another 1600m open age Group 2 race there as a Maiden.
v) I had my first bet in 1971
vi) Trained by Ron Maund I believe.
Answer : Like A Tiger 1973

No, I put the name in the Studbook, but got some horse sired in 1992.
Maybe someone with full membership can track it down.
The Feehan was a handicap in that time and he had very light weights in those group placings, from memory he eventually went off to Sydney and won one of those old Graduation set weight type races. Didn't do much more I think.

Did the same Wenona.
Dunno about "didn't do much more".
He's now got his name cast in bronze here.
I was tossing up between Like a Tiger, and Waterford Road.
I couldn't find Like a Tiger in the Studbook so that, and the fact I couldn't recall his "Best maiden" tag put me off him.
I couldn't see another placing Group placing for Waterford Road, although I did have a vague recollection of him being highly regarded, and he won the Toowoomba Cup so the Maund reference came into play.
Thanks Max
I see Bouteous, a good mare form the 60s has a bunch of non-stud book ladies in her pedigree.

Early in this comp....before any answers entered....I tried to cheat.......went to my old "Miller's Guide" and looked for REAL light-weights that placed. Trouble was....not knowing Vic racing too well, I drew a blank...didn't know those lighties
Saw that the MV Cup was once called the GROSBY CUP. (kind of Slipper...ha ha)

I was only a kid when he placed in the MV Cup, but I remember it as clear as anything. I'd go to the races and I had a few regulars that would put my bets on for me. One was an old guy who I'd help read the formguide etc during the day as he had very poor eyesight. He backed it as well and we talked about it being the best Maiden in Australia. At the end of the day he offered to shout me a 50 cent win bet for helping him out and I snagged a winner around the $16 mark. Left with over eight bucks in my pocket.

Oh, so a kid and a partially blind old bloke decide it's the best maiden in Australia, eh? That makes it incontrovertible, I suppose.

The horse was often referred to in the media as the best maiden in Australia.
It had a bit of a cult following, had write ups in the paper etc.
iii) In his day, was always being referred to as 'Australia's Best Maiden' just like Glowlamp was.

A sarcastic pedant might take issue, so old blokes and kids should stop having polite conversations at the races, I suppose.

I reckon all them sarcastic pedants should be rounded up, and burnt at the stake. I'll bring the matches.
