[ ERROR: SPECIFIED ATTACHMENT MISSING ]

Today we saw 8yo ZIPPING (Danehill - Super Scene) make history by winning his third consecutive Sandown Classic (2400 m).

Just two weeks ago, he was lying on the Flemington turf trapped under the barrier stalls at the start of the Mackinnon Stakes.  This was to have been his last run prior to his fourth tilt at the Melbourne Cup.  With the field falling away, and following a solid 3rd in the Cox Plate, Zipping was given a second-to-none chance of taking out the 2-miler.  He'd run 4th in 2006, 4th in 2007 and 9th in 2008.

It's no secret that I'm an unabashed fan of Zipping.  I first put him up in the headlines when I saw him run 3rd of 16 in a Wednesday handicap at Sandown in March 2006.  My comment on the "old" forum was "it wasn't Nikolic's fault, but the horse should have won clearly."  I've followed Zipping closely since then.  I've not backed him many times, but when I have backed him I can't recall him ever letting me down.

Zipping has now won close to $3 mill.  He's had 39 starts for 13 wins, 2 seconds and 7 thirds.

His low number of starts (for an 8yo) can be attributed to his many minor set-backs, plus the fact that his owner has aimed him at the Spring Carnival in recent years.

Notwithstanding a record that can be matched by few other Australian racehorses, Zipping has his "knockers" - you know, the narks who get no joy seeing someone or something succeed.  Perhaps it's because of their dislike of the Williams style, or maybe they themselves are failures, or maybe it's because Zipping has a unique style of racing and doesn't win every start.

I don't understand the "knocks" for Zipping.

Here's a thread where you can record your views on Zipping and register as a fully-fledged knocker.

UPDATE 15.11.10

That would be ZIP. I can't call him a super stayer when he can't get 2 miles.

The way he finished last years Melbourne Cup off suggested to me he got 2 miles pretty well, the jockey or interference cost him big time, can not remember which, just remember him flashing home like a 1000m squib.

I just got the film out of Z's 3rd at EF to the brilliant Yarrow.  Gee what a horse.

He'd previously won his Mdn at GC.  Bet Steve Hawkins was in raptures. smiley

However far he was beaten, he was flying home, or was that an illusion as he went past tired horses ?

I think his record BEYOND 2400m, which lets face it is bordering on a marathon trip these days, is outstanding.

I love the horse but I think beyond 2400 is his downfall. 2000 to 2400 is his go.

He had horror draws in his tries, and got absolutely no luck.

He gets 2 miles way better than most. Thumb Up

I spose Viewed can't get 2 miles now after his effort last week.

Out of respect for backers of PURPLE, this thread should be retired post haste. My rights to quiet enjoyment of this forum are being infringed.  angry
