Today we saw 8yo ZIPPING (Danehill - Super Scene) make history by winning his third consecutive Sandown Classic (2400 m).
Just two weeks ago, he was lying on the Flemington turf trapped under the barrier stalls at the start of the Mackinnon Stakes. This was to have been his last run prior to his fourth tilt at the Melbourne Cup. With the field falling away, and following a solid 3rd in the Cox Plate, Zipping was given a second-to-none chance of taking out the 2-miler. He'd run 4th in 2006, 4th in 2007 and 9th in 2008.
It's no secret that I'm an unabashed fan of Zipping. I first put him up in the headlines when I saw him run 3rd of 16 in a Wednesday handicap at Sandown in March 2006. My comment on the "old" forum was "it wasn't Nikolic's fault, but the horse should have won clearly." I've followed Zipping closely since then. I've not backed him many times, but when I have backed him I can't recall him ever letting me down.
Zipping has now won close to $3 mill. He's had 39 starts for 13 wins, 2 seconds and 7 thirds.
His low number of starts (for an 8yo) can be attributed to his many minor set-backs, plus the fact that his owner has aimed him at the Spring Carnival in recent years.
Notwithstanding a record that can be matched by few other Australian racehorses, Zipping has his "knockers" - you know, the narks who get no joy seeing someone or something succeed. Perhaps it's because of their dislike of the Williams style, or maybe they themselves are failures, or maybe it's because Zipping has a unique style of racing and doesn't win every start.
I don't understand the "knocks" for Zipping.
Here's a thread where you can record your views on Zipping and register as a fully-fledged knocker.
UPDATE 15.11.10
46 starts for 16 wins 3 seconds and 7 thirds.
Group 1 wins: 2010 Australian Cup (8yo), 2010 Turnbull Stakes (9yo) Group 2 wins: Sandown Classic (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010), 2006 Moonee Valley Cup Listed wins: 2006 Naturalism Stakes
Prizemoney of $4,531,000
Winning Riders: Nick Hall (3), Nick Ryan (3), S Arnold (2), M Rodd (2)

Notwithstanding a record that can be matched by few other Australian racehorses,
surely the long, long list of horses who have won a G1 throughout the years have all achieved more than Zipping?

We should not be restricting our judgment of horse flesh by the number of group 1 win or wether they have won a group 1 race at all.
There are about 10 opportunities for 3yo fillies to win group 1 races at 2400m and about 5 or 6 for colts of the same vintage.
Yet when they turn 4 or are slower maturing types they have 1 group 1 race at 2400m or beyond, That being the BMW in the autumn.

I would think Zipping has beaten a lot more so-called "Group 1 horses" than have beaten HIM.

auth Zipping has run in 13 G1's and 12 of those at 2000m or further(I will not count the run in the Newmarket).
Now if 12 tries isn't enough to win one, how many is?

I would think Zipping has beaten a lot more so-called "Group 1 horses" than have beaten HIM. Olympic Gold medalists get beaten all the time by those without one as well. But they at least always know they've climbed that mountain.

OK DD, we understand you love him and I will not understate his mighty achievements anymore. BUT, you did say Black Piranha was the best horse in Australia not long back.

napes Don't you "have an opinion" of her? I thought she was great in defeat, and that she will go on with it.

And who was your best horse in Australia? Jedi Starfighter?

Scenic Blast. I notice you do pick some very good winners DD, congrats. But if Black Piranha is the best horse in Australia Old Larsy is really James Packer.

Not looking for congrats. But you seem adept at throwing a rock after the event.

DD you should know by now that on this forum he wouldn't be known as any more than handy until he can win a cox plate.

I do realise that. Maybe next year.
What's the oldest horse to win a Cox Plate?

DD I am sure congrats is exactly what you are looking for. I keep forgetting this is your private forum and no-one else should have any say unless it is to marvel at your exceptional talent. You don't mind throwing a few rocks yourself.
